Best settings for a 3090 for a Reverb G2 and 9900k

Dear All,

Apologies in advance if this is covered somewhere else, but would someone have any guide on how to set up Il2 to work best with the below setup?

Reverb G2

Asus ROG Strix 3090 ('ROG-Strix-RTX3090-O24G-GAMING' which apparently has a boost clock of 1890mhz)

9900k OCed to 5.2Ghz (let's see, if not then will dial it down to 5Ghz, no problems so far)

I would want to know what settings in IL2 to use, what settings to set up in SteamVR and whether or not the graphics card itself should be overclocked (further?) using MSI Afterburner (understand this is the software that is best to use, though the card is an Asus).

Apologies again, last time I visited half a year ago or so there was a stickied thread from Fenris Wolf (?) but can't find that anymore....

Any hints/guidance appreciated.

high preset, shadows high, mirrors medium, distant x4, canopy off, ~100km, blurred filter, medium roughness, grass off, extreme clouds, msaa 2x, 4k on, distant buildings on

60Hz + 120% SS +motion smoothing + openvr_api.dll ("fsr": "enabled": true,"useNIS": true, "renderScale": 0.77, "sharpness": 0.99, "radius": 0.4, "applyMIPBias": true, "debugMode": false)

This is what I use on my G2 and keep a constant 90hz without re-projection. I dont use FSR/NIS and my steam vr supersampling is arount 107%. I dont overclock my 3090, just make the fan curve higher then stock..

I use similar settings to DBCOOPER011 but SS = 100% and also no FSR/NIS.

Found that enabling sharpening introduced significant shimmering on distant objects. I use MSAA x2 instead. With these settings and the new cloud feature in the latest IL2 I seldom drop below 85 fps in game.

The 9900k is going to have some limitation with instructions per cycle (IPC) when compared with the 12900K that I believe DBCOOPER011 is using.

This may limit the ability of the RTX 3090 GPU to run at close to 100%. Hopefully someone with a similar CPU/GPU combo can comment.

@DD_Llama_Thumper make sure you ignore this post, since it will not help you considering you use a G2 and would never want to knock it down to 60hz. The other two comments are in line with what I use in IL2 as well and are your best guidelines to get a good VR experience. You can also opt to use the FSR mod and disable in-game sharpening (a lot of people seem to have good luck with that reducing frame times and increasing performance).

I must be crazy but i never saw a difference with 90hz on my g2.

What is the benefit of 90hz?

I always seem to get a better, smoother image with 60hz than with 90hz running a 3080 ti OC 12gi on G2

Well , i dont agree with those settings.   I have a G2 and a 3090 Graficcard  too

Seems that having the highest FPS is what many people consider as "best settings in VR"

Also some people say best way to see far distance enemies is "the best Settings" ( put your resolution down , till you see a brick in the sky *#*? ! )

(same Issue as in FS2020)

Not in my case.    I Think " Best Setting" is also very personal and something like taste...

For me personally  is the Best  Nicest  Beautyfull  Vieuw what i want to have and consider "Best Settings", i dont look for Fps...  I just want to have it somehow fluid . (even 45 FPS in VR can feel fluid...)   Once I feel good i leave and dont touch it anymore.  (4800h IL2 in VR with Rift, RiftS, G2 HP)

With these settings  I still have best fluid turningfights with 10-20 planes in high Mountains with heavy clouds and explosions

SteamVR with a G2 down to 60-100 ! Not More ! you dont need that  ( with my Oculus Rift S, yes ,  i had 120 )

I have CLOUDS of course in ULTRA!!   Great, amazing , wonderfull !

HDR on

Shadow Quality hi

Distant landscape of course HI

Grass full !  I want a good feeling on ground  ( Once in air grass does not take performance)

Its just my personal taste  and i respect of course other "personal" taste too...

Same here I go for fluid performance with pretty high graphics. Not for fps numbers.

dburne, can you post your settings? just asking as I see we have a very similar system (motherboard, processor, memory).

For anyone interested, below my settings (9900k OC'ed to 5.1ghz, Asus Z390-E, Asus RoG Strix OC RTX 3090, HP Reverb G2, 32GB DDR-400 RAM). I get a minimum of 45 fps playing on online servers, often more (sorry don't have any more precise observations!).

If useful for anyone I can run a test track, just let me know which track/what software to use to record FPS. Thank you again for the above help!

S!,

I have fooled around with my settings and I never get above 45fps, but it never drops below 43fps. I've tried so many different settings I've given up trying to get more than 45fps. See my signature for my rig stats. My settings are identical to Llama's other than I use blurry landscape filter. I find it helps me spot objects over the forest better.

I'm just curious why I get get more fps using the settings others have suggested.

Check if you have Motion Reprojection on in SteamVR.  Often if you can't make 90fps under MR, it will take you down to 45 and fill in the blanks back to 90fps.  If you are happy with the result, no real need to chase the fps.  Play around with higher quality settings?

The HDR setting cost is 15 FPS and the MSAAx4 setting will cost you another 20 at least.  You'll notice the others above are not running HDR and their MSAA is set to x1
