JV44HeinzBar Posted December 10, 2021 Posted December 10, 2021 S!, I'm working on developing zimmerit layer for the panther. I've got a couple of questions. I can't find any reference that Zimmerit was added to the top of the turret. Does anyone have info concerning the zimmerit application to the top of the turret? 2nd question. I can't seem to find the area on the template that surrounds the MG hatch. Can anyone direct to this part's location? Thanks, HB 2 2
Frinik22 Posted December 11, 2021 Posted December 11, 2021 |I read this article which might be of help to you: https://panzerworld.com/zimmerit 1) Zimmerit was not used before September 1943 so for Prokhorovka it's too early. 2) the article says it was applied to sloped areas and sometimes on turrets but given that the top is not sloped I suspect they would not have applied any there.
JV44HeinzBar Posted December 11, 2021 Author Posted December 11, 2021 S! Frinik, Thanks for the info. I"m very familiar with that webpage. It's actually where I got the zimmerit pattern I used on the panther above. I didn't realize that there were ~ 9 different variations of zimmerit until I visited that website. Anyhow, this is more of a learning exercise for me and photoshop. I'm debating if I should apply the zimmerit to the front track fenders or not. HB
JV44HeinzBar Posted December 11, 2021 Author Posted December 11, 2021 (edited) S!, I updated this panther to 1st Panzer Div, 1st Company, 4th platoon, #145. I couldn't find the exact date, so I randomly assigned it to June, 1944. The picture I have is grainy and lacks time data. Honestly, I'm not 100% it's #145, but put it down to artistic license I'm still having trouble finding some of the bits and pieces on the panther. I figure I'll try to learn all the bits on 1 tank before I move on to others. If anyone can tell me where the bits are located (see pic), it would be most appreciated. Shoutout to @Na-zdorovie and @Maillon21 for making suggestion on how to create the zimmerit layers. HB Edited December 11, 2021 by JV44HeinzBar credit for help 3 1
SMARTAZZ Posted December 11, 2021 Posted December 11, 2021 (edited) That looks GREAT! Looks very realistic, spot on. Hope you figure those issues out, I want to drive that cat around! Edited December 11, 2021 by SMARTAZZ added thought
Maillon21 Posted December 14, 2021 Posted December 14, 2021 Hi HB, Two pictures to help you. The MG hatch is an assembly of very small parts and I’ve given up finding them. The bean-shaped piece is the same for both sides.
THERION Posted December 14, 2021 Posted December 14, 2021 @JV44HeinzBar @Maillon21 @Na-zdorovie @SMARTAZZ The bean shaped objects are actually heavy towing hooks and never had any Zimmerit on it, never! 1

Thanks for this clarification. I never put zimmerit on them, but I sometimes thought it best to paint them. Should we leave them in sand yellow or paint them black?

Should we leave them in sand yellow or paint them black? They were not painted when leaving the factory, much as all other tools fixed on the hull. BUT the Germans modified their camouflage in the field depending on the season and/or theatre of operation. Field paintwork was done rather ad hoc and so they very often sprayed the paint all over the tools. So it isn't too unrealistic to have these hooks painted. 1

JV44HeinzBar Posted December 14, 2021 Author Posted December 14, 2021 (edited) S!, This is the only portion of the MG hatch I could ID. I've tried adding a UVmap as a layer, but the other parts are so small that I couldn't read the grid numbers. Perhaps, this will help us find the other parts? As you can see, I had to remove the camo layers while keeping the weathering & shadows on to be able to see the part. Of course, I used a UVmap to find the general location. The top portion of the MG hatch is pointed, almost an arrow head in shape. HB Edit: the picture should read "Top of MG hatch rather than MC"...oops.
