Effects of different graphical settings?

Hello!

I am pretty new to this and would love if someone can explain to me what the different settings actually do in the game?

I use a 5800X, 3080 and a Reverb G2 but having trouble getting a sharp picture, mostly at distance.

Because of the overwhelming options to choose from I get confused about this.

I have tried in game settings, settings in the data folder and also the fholger FSR but I actually dont see much difference.

I am mainly looking for a visually good game experience.

Can someone point me into the right direction where to start?

1: In game settings?

2: In the data folder of the game?

3: In fholger FSR?

4: In Steam VR?

5: In Steam WMR?

6: What specific settings increase the quality of the picture, Sharpening, Gamma, MSAA etc...?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you very much, that was interesting facts, but if I understood it right, it is mainly how different settings affect your FPS.

I am more looking for a similar chart showing how different settings affect the image quality, mainly being able to see things far away.

Maybe such a chart doesn´t exist because it depends on the hardware being used?

In the first five blocks of that chart, discarding the mirrors, the bottom settings on those four are cranked up max visuals, MSAA is under the anti-aliasing column and is for most the single biggest drain on their card, mess with that one last.  Also set the sharp /blurred/ off to what looks best for you, sometimes hard to tell the difference, but pay attention to how your contacts in the air appear with it.

Get your basic visuals in game as good and high as possible, than crank the external resolution if you have the extra horse power.  Everything is a trade off, easy to get to the point where you rob one to boost another.  But get your base in game settings maxed to where you like them first, than mess with the outside seeking improvement, you won't get much, but it is doable.  The inverse also works, you may get better visuals and be able to crank up the in game settings by reducing the resolution in steam.  Every card and system has it's own sweet spot, finding that's the hard part, lots of combo's out there.

I'm running Window's 11 now, and the increase in resolution (clarity) has improved a fair bit outside the cockpit; spotting has improved also with zero adjustments having been made to my settings before updating.

@SCG_Fenris_Wolf do you have your awesome VR settings thread ready for new folks to follow it after that thread got moved?

As far as I know that chart doesn´t exist , but it would be certainly good if someone could create that for all the options of IL-2, just in monitor since in VR it is quite complex to get good through the lenses pictures.

In the past I was just creating some comparison images to see the influence of SuperSampling ratio:

And also I was combining supersampling with AA (it is the current FXAA) to see how that influences:

Thanks for your suggestions, I will give it a try.

Do you meant that: Graphic presets, Shadows quality, Distant landscape details and Horizon draw distance are the first ones I should tweak to get the best visuals possible?

At what point is it recomended to tweak the settings in the data-startup file?

Interesting, are you running Intel or AMD?

Think I read somewhere that AMD was suffering in gaming performance, from upgrading to Windows 11

As far as nVidia settings go this here is still pretty much relevant (regarding performance costs of various options) despite the changes in the game's graphics engine which have transpired in the meantime:

Aside from not buying IL-2 products and getting my clan to not purchase anything anymore for the time being, I vowed to only rebuild the thread once the Devs have fixed IL-2's bugged aspect ratio for the Vive Pro 2. Given the information spread here, I might have to break that oath at least in regard of the thread. Contemplating atm.

Little note though, please do not follow the Nvidia settings posted here. They are not for VR.

P.S. I'm running on 120Hz, reprojected, in the VP2 and use fholger's OpenVR_FSR v1.3. Motion Smoothing is more accurate at 60/120 than 45/90 and very usable.

Fenris is right, I should've of made it clear that the information provided in the link about the nvidia settings is just to see how much a performance hit percentage-wise each setting can actually have, not to copy the ones mentioned in the summary post of that thread blindly.
