Vive Pro 2's Motion Compensation fixed, absolutely fantastic

Well looks like the delay was incorrect info, Fed EX now shows the Vive Pro 2 has been delivered to HTC in Seattle.

Whew! Now the real waiting begins lol.

I denied the repair option and went with a re-delivery of a new unit (EU consumer protection laws). Since that has failed, as the new sealed unit had the same problems with the sound output and a few other things (cameras didn't work for example), and I don't see the Developers fixing IL-2, so it gets compatible with the headset, I stepped back from purchase contract and the exchange backwards was made.

I received the full purchasing price today. I hooked up the old Reverb G2 (with new cable), but I regret one thing already - the tracking is so abysmal, it's just useful for FlightSims or seated games. I do not know whether I should get a Varjo Aero, as I know of noone credible who has tested it in IL-2.

It's true that the proper OpenXR integration of MSFS is fantastic. I wish IL-2 pulled that in as well.

Supposed HP has updated the Reverb G2 with a new revision that improves the controller tracking, however currently  it is only available in the U.S.

Controller Tracking

For controller tracking, the company says it has adjusted the Reverb G2’s cameras to improve vertical coverage by 30%, specifically “resolving blind spots above and below the waist.” We don’t have many details on exactly what changed with the cameras (angle, field-of-view, etc), though the company did confirm that it was a hardware change rather than merely software.

And today got notice HTC has shipped the headset back to me via Fed EX. Tracking shows it should arrive the 23rd. Repair ticket tells me absolutely nothing other than they received the headset yesterday and shipped back out today. So no idea if they did a repair, a replace, or anything at all. Guess I will find out when it arrives back to me on the 23rd.

Posted

Just had another look at my correspondence from HTC. The email I got from support stating the device is preparing to be returned to me also included a serial number. Different from the serial number I had listed for the ticket - but close. Last four I had for the headset I sent them was 0523, last four listed on the return coming back to me is 0623.  All other numbers identical. So could be a different headset, or could be just a typo and same headset.

In other words I still have no idea LOL.

Posted

Well I emailed support back from my support ticket correspondence asking the question. Support advised me just to check the serial number when it arrives, if it is different it was a replacement, if same it was repaired.

So still not quite sure as the two serial numbers are so close together. But based on that and the very quick turnaround ( practically same day) I am going with it is likely a replacement and coincidence the serials are so close.  I will know for sure when it finally arrives on the 23rd. I just find it a little strange my support ticket did not reflect what was actually done - it would have been nice if it did.

Seems bizarre neither the ticket nor the representative provided what they did to make it right for you. I guess in any case you should be good to go. Hope it works out for you

Just got an update from Fed Ex seems my Vive Pro 2 is now scheduled for delivery tomorrow rather than Tuesday.

Yeah. For sure I will not believe any devs saying they'll fix their game to integrate it, even if it's my favourite title. It will either work properly or it will not.

Now Fed EX tracking shows updated to Monday delivery. But shows it on vehicle for delivery so who knows lol.

Ok so just got home from Church and had a Vive Pro 2 sitting on my doorstep.

Seems they must have sent me a replacement unit, this one has earphones attached along with a cable and face gasket. The one I sent in had neither, no headphones and no cable or face gasket.

I figured that would likely be the case as they really did not have it but one day and nothing noted on support ticket about a repair.

Also just checked and it is a totally different serial number.

Now to test this puppy out.

I am sad to report a whole new issue now with this replacement Vive Pro 2. My Lighthouse 2.0 base stations will not always wake up and run with this VP2 headset.

I have uninstalled and clean installed both Vive Console and Steam VR multiple times. Only thing that gets them back is to remove the Steam VR USB drivers in Steam VR Developer Mode and reboot the PC. It will then work fine for one gaming session, next time I open Vive Console/Steam VR it happens again.

Major PITB. To test I hooked the Index back up, no problem at all with Index, base stations always run beautifully. So it is something in the Vive software or the this replacement headset. Started yesterday morning and been doing it ever since.

I tell ya I am about done with this Vive Pro 2.  Way too much aggravation. I have submitted logs over on the Vive forums for them to look at, will see if they come back with something helpful. In the meantime going back to Index and Reverb G2 for some trouble free gaming. I sure am glad now I did not sell them.

Oh bummer. The Bluetooth controller for the basestations is in the breakout box by the way.

In Steam's folder you must get rid of the lighthouse folder, re-install SteamVR and then reconnect to the stations.

It may very well be a software issue that is only happening with the Vive Breakout box, as they all keep their separate settings.

Try that first, and if it fails, demand a new breakout box or retract the purchase contract. How many times do you need to endure replacements until it is not acceptable anymore?

Well turns out I found out today whilst Steam VR with Vive Console reports no base stations tracking, in fact they are. Gamed all day today with the Vive Pro 2 and tracking was superb. Yeah crazy huh. With Index plugged in, they are reported just fine and go into sleep mode just fine.

However with Vive Pro 2 plugged in with Vive Console, Steam VR does not report them as working. But they are.

Will give the above a try thanks. It would be nice if they were recognized properly where they would go into sleep mode properly.

Ok got rid of the Lighthouse folder, uninstalled Steam VR and deleted remaining folders.

Installed Steam VR again and still the same thing with Vive Pro 2.

Yet the lights are solid green on the base stations and they are tracking perfectly. They do not however go into sleep mode as apparently the Steam VR software does not see them as being there lol.

Been following your situation, Dburne. Glad you got it worked out. I have the old original lighthouses, with no bluetooth. I also just leave them on, which I have now for two years with no issues. So, I had no suggestions. I am now wondering how many people use the VP2 in IL2 ...

Have you cleansed all Vive console related folders and all dependencies.

I recommend trying on another PC, or another instance of Windows. Then you'll know if it's a software issue that has befallen just your main.

Yep.

Do not have access to another PC.

Going to just not worry with it any longer, tracking is great and no problem there. Vive Pro 2 working fine - just can't set base stations to sleep or standby with the Vive Pro 2. I will just unplug them at the end of the day or gaming session not that big a deal for me to do. I will be sending info and logs to Vive though so they are aware and see if they have any further suggestions.

My point is, the HTC Vive Team might not be able to fix it because they are not responsible for it.. Look here: ?

I had a similar issue with both base stations affected, not just one. I solved it by searching online on what to remove in order to cleanse my installation, redoing it, and then they were properly recognized again.

It's basically the old story... we got a software stack with several dependencies and if one breaks the other one won't recognize it. It might as well be SteamVR, they keep track of your stations in the steamvr.vrsettings file as well as the lighthouse folder of Steam. Removing and reinstalling SteamVR itself won't suffice at Steam saves information in Steam's root folders and other places. That said, the controlling of the basestations is done by Steam - not by HTC. It does use the breakout box, but only as a guest who does not behave well.

I am certain Steam addressed the false address regarding the breakout box, trying to talk to the "old breakout box". It sees there is one, but doesn't shake hands with it to get the new address ("What's your name, how may I address you Sir?").

image.thumb.png.6b59c54ef2ea14d8f9813470331f2064.png

As you see, even though I have removed all my Vive Software and installations after returning the Vive Pro 2 - I still have these things corpsing around in my steamvr settings file.

It's time for another cleanup here as well.

Even if it is a semi-powerful laptop, try it. You certainly know someone who would be ready to bring a tower or his new laptop over to check out VR with it... :)

Well I thought everything was working great, been fussing around all morning with this thing. I tell ya I am about at the end of my rope, time for me to cut my losses on this one I think. Way too much aggravation factor involved in using this VP2. Especially when I can plug the Index in, or the Reverb G2, and they both work flawlessly every time.  Crazy that the VP2 worked great from June up to about a month ago. Even replacement headset I got is acting up now.

Maybe it does not like Windows 11. That is about the time my troubles began.  I have troubleshooted this thing far more than I ever should have I think. Just hooked the Index back up, everything working beautifully. Reverb G2 continues to work flawlessly as well.

Thanks for the offer for help, I think I am done with it at this point though.

It worked fine with Win11. For me it started to refuse working as soon as I had any other stuff installed except Vive Console + SteamVR. WMR is a big nono to even keep active on the system, and as soon as SteamVR gets into contact with other headsets, it starts randomly acting up as well. You're basically bound to have one headset and not switch between them or say adios.

I said adios to the VP2.. mainly though due to the IL-2 devs not fixing their freaking game. Looking forward to new VR options now.

Yeah I thoroughly tested it with no WMR installed as well. They asked me to submit the Vive log files so they can take a look, just uploaded them will see what they say. For now though the VP2 is removed from my system and boxed away.

Hoping when I receive the Aero I can finally retire all other headsets. My office currently looks like a spaghetti factory with three headsets worth of cables lying around lol.

Hello Don,

Thanks for reaching us back. This is Lucas, a pleasure to help you today.

I appreciate all the information and the time you took testing and sending the logs, from what I can see this issue seems to be related entirely to the update to Windows 11 as we cannot assure the Vive will work properly with this one, there are still glitches and incompatibilities we've had that haven't been fixed, so my recommendation will be to downgrade to Windows 10 if you can, otherwise, I'd recommend you waiting for an update that makes this entirely compatible.

Take care and have a wonderful day.

Lucas

About what I thought. Going to set this aside for a while and maybe check again in a few weeks or after their next software update. Not going back to Windows 10 at this point, not when I have two other fine working headsets I can use with zero issues.

Mine ran fine on Win 11 across two PCs. It's a common excuse today.

Sounds like BS by them, but if you want to believe that, you'll be freed from actually fixing the issue, but keep an $800 paperweight. Or wait for their compatibility patch. :scratch_one-s_head:

Yes I do believe that is likely the issue. I never got that response from them during all this until after I sent the logs. They even replaced the headset. I believe Oculus Quest 2 is also having some compatibility issues currently with Windows 11.  Hopefully as time moves on they will get more reports  and can get this resolved. Could be just certain configurations experience this issue. The whole time I had Win 10 since getting the headset in June it was solid as could be.

I installed Windows 11 on Oct 5th and I first reported this issue on another forum on Oct. 7th.

My "uneducated guess" would be there is a conflict deep within the HTC software and Windows 11 security. Only time I could get the Vive Pro 2 to run correctly was when I disabled Windows 11 Defender real-time protection. But that was not a fix as even then eventually the issue would come back even with it disabled.

I have spent enough hours on this - got two other headsets here that work beautifully. I will check back after future updates and see if anything has changed with the Vive Pro 2.

Regarding paperweights, well I am used to that - when I was using Vive Pro 2 my Reverb G2 and Index could be considered paper weights.

Yeah this message was just posted two hours ago on the Oculus forum.

Seems HTC is not the only ones having some compatibility issues with Windows 11.

They posted it shortly after I posted on there about my issue with HTC Vive Pro 2 and Windows 11.

Hi there fellow gamers! Since the recent update, Windows 11 has not been compatible with the Quest 2. We know that this is an issue and are working towards new updates. Window 10 is still compatible and recommended for your device.

Seems Quest 2 issues with Windows 11 produce very similar issue to my Vive Pro 2 issue.

I have been back to flying IL-2 in my Vive Pro 2, enjoying a full day of campaign flying today. I managed to work around my issue by disabling some of Defender options in Windows 11.

Can someone tell me what to look for as far as the issue with IL-2 and the Vive Pro 2 that has been talked about here? I have been tilting my head both in the flying and in the menu screens and am struggling seeing what it is....

You need to have both sides of vision to perceive a false aspect ratio afaik. Otherwise it is mitigated. It is like this: If you tilt your head, a square becomes a trapezoid or a rhombus - the angles are not stable.

Just as short-sighted people and those using glasses have trouble perceiving depth, relative to well sighted luckies. Depth perception is built from size of object in reference frame, texture detail, binocular overlap, stability of picture.

E.g. You can feel depth in some headsets (Index, Oculus Rift CV1 were good at it), and not in others (Pimax headsets).

So it's not something exclusive to the situation you're in, but many people experience similar things.

Well the struggles continued for me again with the Vive Pro 2. I have put it away and uninstalled the software and gone back to using my Reverb G2 which works great. Just way too much hassle trying to get a good experience with it now. If I ever see them mention in an update to beta software fixes for compatibility issues with Windows 11 I may try it again. For now it is pretty worthless for me.

SCG_Fenris_Wolf

As I said, you're mistaken to believe it would be a Windows 11 compatibility issue.

HTC seems almost as crooked as Pimax brushing your issues off with this.

But if you believe that BS and don't go by the advise to clean up your system (which, to be honest, should not be necessary but is which I consider ridiculous, I'm with you here) then we can't help you either.

Anyway, I'm on the G2 as well now and look forward to the Varjo Aero. I am not buying from China anymore, due to these reasons and others which aren't to be discussed on the forums though.

Posted

Yeah that is always a possibility but I am not quite ready to go to that extreme just yet. Doing a search on Vive Pro 2 stuttering in Windows 11 reveals I am not alone with the issue. Example here:

Pretty sure if I were to wipe everything and clean install and still be faced with the issue I would lose it lol.

Plus I will probably be doing a new build around this time next year. And of course I should have the Aero before too much longer.

I can get the Vive Pro 2 to work for a while by disabling Defender real time protection, so I can use it but a bit of a pain. But that nice FOV and image clarity is nice.

Holy crap - I think I may have finally resolved this issue on my system.

I run two monitors in extended display mode. My main monitor is a 144 Hz monitor which incidentally I got at the same time I installed Windows 11.

My secondary monitor is a 60 Hz monitor.  I am pretty sure I had tried unplugging the secondary monitor previously but can't say for sure.

So this afternoon I went into Windows 11 Display Settings and elected to show on Monitor 1 - my main monitor only.

And the stuttering/shaking issue did not occur. I went through a few restarts of the system, shutting down and then booting up the system, opening and closing Vive Console several times - and each time as long as I am only displaying only on the main monitor there is no stuttering/shaking of the image in the headset. And I mean I have tried it several times now. Went back to extending the displays across both monitors - and boom! Issue came right back. Back to displaying only on Monitor 1 and no more issue.

I know in my previous troubleshooting over these last two months I though about that but like I say I may have just unplugged the monitor and not changed it in Windows 11 Display settings - who knows. From my testing now over the last couple of hours or so, it is looking very good. So far I have not been able to make the thing present this issue with just the one monitor being displayed.

I should be getting a pretty full day of gaming in with it tomorrow, will advise if it remains good or not. I am very hopeful now!

Obviously with the headset on not having the second monitor displaying anything is not really an issue for me.

Edit: Yep several hours today with no issues.
