I thought I would post my settings to maybe help others with a similar low spec system . This has taken me a long while to get to a stage where I am happy with the performance and visuals. Cheers @SCG_Fenris_Wolf for explaining Fidelity FX to me.

In Wings of Liberty I am now getting  90fps for the majority of the time and it looks nice as well. The in game graphics settings are quite low as this was the only way of keeping the game smooth with high frame rates. I also found the sharpness within IL2 and in FSR to cause way too much shimmering. Having them both set to 0 has eliminated the shimmer and for me given the best picture through the G2.

Here are my settings with in the Fidelity FX config file with steam vr resolution at 100 % :

FSR 0.69

Sharpness 0

Radius 0.7

IL2s config settings :

[KEY = graphics]
    3dhud = 0
    adapter = 0
    bloom_enable = 0
    canopy_ref = 0
    desktop_center = 0
    detail_rt_res = 1024
    draw_distance = 0.00000
    far_blocks = 0
    fps_counter = 1
    fps_limit = 0
    full_height = 600
    full_width = 800
    fullscreen = 0
    gamma = 0.90000
    grass_distance = 0.00000
    hdr_enable = 0
    land_anisotropy = 2
    land_detail = 1
    land_tex_lods = 0
    max_cache_res = 1
    max_clouds_quality = 1
    mgpu_compatible = 0
    mirrors = 1
    msaa = 0
    multisampling = 0
    or_ca = 0.00345
    or_dummy = 0
    or_enable = 1
    or_height = 2139
    or_hud_rad = 0.85000
    or_hud_size = 0.85000
    or_ipd = 0.06602
    or_sipdc = 0.00000
    or_width = 2191
    post_sharpen = 0
    preset = 2
    prop_blur_max_rpm_for_vr = 155
    rescale_target = 1.00000
    shadows_quality = 0
    ssao_enable = 0
    stereo_dof = 5.00000
    vsync = 0
    win_height = 600
    win_width = 800

I also have "Best Visual display" selected in Headset Display Settings.

Hope this can help others with a lower spec system.

Great info, glad you're getting 90 fps. I have a similar setup to you -regular 1080- and ended up buying a G2 on sale. Thought I'd have to keep using the rift s until I could find a 3080 (which I'm sure I'll never find at this point?), but Il-2 is running at 45fps with motion smoothing for me.

I haven't tried FSR yet, but have a startup.cfg nearly identical to yours. I'm running at 2500x2436 resolution and think it's great. What res are you running? What's your thoughts on FSR?

Thanks, steamvr is running at 100% which is 3176 x 3100 . With FSR set to 0.69 my finished resolution is  2191 x 2139.

If I increased the fsr much more then the frame rate dropped which seemed to cause bad ghosting and stuttering.If I decreased the fsr then the visuals were poor quality for the whole flight. This seems to be the right setting for my system.

I don't think it would have been possible to get these frame rates and visuals by just using steam vr.

Beaufort,

Do you have both Steam VR and the Per-Application video settings for IL2 set at 100% ?

Yes, I have not touched the per application settings so they are both at 100%

Il2 is way more optimized these days. The fact that we can run a g2 with 1080s is nuts considering where it used to be. I can barely run the other sim at all, and it certainly isn't enjoyable, with a 1080 and g2.

Another small tip that most are probably aware of: try setting your vr pre-rendered frames in nvidea control panel to 3. People's mileage seems to vary, but it works well for many.

Did you notice a difference setting it to 3 ? I think mine is at 1 as I had not changed it yet.

In my case, I noticed a big difference, particularly when turning my head fast to the side. It removes jutter. I don't notice much if any input lag so it's very worth it to me. I know others have said it didn't help as much, so try it yourself and see if it works. Fly low to the ground and turn your head quickly without it being set to 3. Then set it to 3 and run the same test. If you notice a difference, change it.

Over time, I also noticed I messed with the control panel settings too much. Imo it is best to keep it simple. I reset everything to default in the nvidea control panel, and only made these changes, with good result:

*Threaded optimization - auto
*Power management mode- prefer maximum performance
*Vertical sync- OFF (some say fast sync helps smoothness in vr, though I'm not sure how that would work)
*Texture Filtering Quality: Performance (this is a pretty big one)
*AA transparency- OFF

EDIT: I tried FSR with the settings you listed and wow. 80 FPS regularly. With a 1080. And at 0.69 with the steam res set at 3176 x 3100 you can't see much of any degradation.

Thanks, I have just changed all these settings in Nvidia panel. I'll post how I get on .

Seems to have helped with head tracking smoothness, thanks !
