I might have this totally wrong and be thinking of a different game but I have a memory of an info panel that can be made to appear, showing what bits of a tank are damaged and under repair etc. I can't see anything in key-bindings that refers to it. Is it in TC?

Yes it is Keyboard "ENTER"  not number pad. You can always go to "settings" to see what your current keybindings are as well as modify them.

I must say I had to break out my TM warthog and take advantage of it  making the sim much "easier" and immersive for my self.

Its rather complicated for myself in the heat of battle to recall alot of double key bindings.

For some weird reason I can't map the Enter key to my Virpil box. Button or switch, it'll activate the chat-box and component panel but pressing/switching again does nothing to dismiss it, I have to use the keyboard.

Sounds like a conflict, Try mapping the "chat" function to a different key assignment so there are no other commands assigned to the "enter" key , then assign your box to it.
