Bouncing Bullets

I'll keep it brief...

When flying the Spitfire Mk XIV and Spitfire Mk IXe on the Rhineland map, when shooting towards the ground my bullets or cannon shells bounce off of the ground... at a dive angle of 20 degrees or so. It doesn't make a difference what the surface is, earth, grass, concrete or tarmac.

I never see this in guncam footage and for me it spoils the 'believability' and immersion.

Having said that, I want to say thank you for creating such a fantastic and realistic simulation, the experience in VR is wonderful!

I'm pretty sure I've seen a similar ricochet effect in gun cam footage.

I should have been more specific, I have seen it when the aircraft is diving at a shallow angle and the bullet is ricocheting off a solid surface. I am fine with that, I just don't think you should see it when shooting into earth or grass etc, which is what is happening for me.

When I first fired an infantry machine gun with tracers during night exercises at targets presented on the slope of a hill I was surprised at how many bullets actually ricocheted.

I obviously didn’t measure the angle of the slope - but as a general rule if there are more ricochets then you expected it might be realistic.

@Eisenfaustus Thanks for giving your real life experience!

Can I ask, what was the terrain like? Was it a grassy slope or a sandy slope or a rocky slope?

Here in these guncam reels you will see some tracers bouncing off grass and earth, some timestamps 1:50, 2:55, 3:20, 3:40

Damp sand with a little grass and a few rocks.

I always feel sorry for the horse at 3:03. I know that horses were used for military purposes but even so...

I have a similar experience experience firing the Browning M2HB , there were many ricochets while firing on different types of terrain. And of course I could usually only see the tracers bouncing.

Thanks for the replies and video,

The pilot is aiming at a metal target and therefore when I saw those ricochets I assumed that they were bouncing off the target, not the background terrain. But having read your replies sharing your experiences of firing a machine gun and not just at concrete, I am swayed to believing what we see in game is real.

I learned something new today!

Happy Landings!

A small anecdote on bouncing bullets:

I once shot down my squadron leader while flying in one of the ACG group campaign in CLOD, unfortunately his aircraft drifted through the path of my strafing run (we were making a strafe attack on a RAF airfield) and exactly above where my MG and Cannons shells were bouncing up again in the air. Halfway over the Channel to get back to France his engine sized and he had to take an unwelcomed swim back ?

I also had a squadmate shooting me down, I fired at a FW-190, and when I broke right and up he fired at the same target and round bounced off the 190 hitting the underside of my engine, I had to ditch later one. He got the two kills, the 190 and me ?

Don't feel bad.   It takes at least 100 .50 hits to bring down a horse.   He probably made it back to the barn with just a minor wound or two.

There's parts of a horse that can probably survive a .50 wound, The other 90% of the horse, at the very least, is a "takes days to die" wound from a single .50 hit.

(Sorry to brown-pill you all.)
