VA_DontSnk Posted August 6, 2021 Posted August 6, 2021 Hey all, Just started flying a lot more again and I'm struggling with some issues of my sim slowing down mostly in combat situations with increased planes and gunfire. I've only been flying on the Finnish Virtual pilots server but I noticed the same issue in single player as well. Its strange because my frames rarely go below 60 but when they drop under 100 its like the sim just gets real stuttery and choppy. Specs and current settings below. MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Plus LGA1200 i7 10700K 32 GB trident Gskill RAM RTX 3070 OC EVO SSD Asus VG32Q 32" 1440P @144hz Vsync is forced on in control panel at the "fast" setting. I'm not using G-sync/Free sync. Ive tried other Vsync settings with no results just image tearing. Any tips would be appreciated on settings to tweak. S~

With so many different computer hardware selections, there will be issues. I suggest experimenting with many settings (one at a time) check for any improvement then move on to check another graphic setting change. Good luck. Report back with any success.
grcurmudgeon Posted August 6, 2021 Posted August 6, 2021 You have a 144Hz monitor with VSync on. Any frame rate below that that is not an even multiple will cause choppiness. For example, at 60 FPS, which is a bit less than half the monitor's refresh, some frames are displayed for 2 "cycles" of the monitor, and some are displayed for "3". The inconsistency of the frame times is what makes it seem choppy.
VA_DontSnk Posted August 6, 2021 Author Posted August 6, 2021 Sounds about right. Is there anything I can do to help with This? Should I be running with freesync/sync on in the control panel with vsync off? When I've tried this before I couldn't tell if it was working or not.
grcurmudgeon Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I have never owned a FreeSync / GSync monitor (someday...), so my experience is nil. However, this is exactly what those features were made for - to give you a smoother experience by not having to wait longer than necessary to refresh the screen. The monitor will dynamically match the refresh the game is actually running at, rather than forcing the game to an arbitrary rate.
BladeMeister Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I built a new rig last year and also added a 240hz gsync compatible monitor and now I run it with no vsync and gysync compatibility on. I have no tearing and haven't noticed any stutter. I noticed that Il2 GBS is more fluid which is exactly what I look for in any Combat Flight Sim. This is my first experience with Gsync compatibility, but I think it is worth the extra $ to purchase a Gsync compatible monitor. S!Blade<>< 1

S~ I don't use vsync in the nvidia control panel, I leave it unchecked along with Triple Buffering and enable vsync in game, works great. I tell it to use Application controled setting, same with AA, in game setting of 4. But if you are using a new monitor with the Gsync stuff I don't know why you would use vsync in nvidia control panel or the in game settings. My monitor is an old Gateway 1920x1200 1080p and it will tear if vsync is not on in one form or the other, and I only have a native 60hz refresh rate anyway. This thing is older than dirt, but runs and looks fantastic, can't see spending any more money on a new one right now. Cheers Edited August 9, 2021 by 352nd_Hoss
