Implement Open XR fpr VR rendering

First of all as usual a salute to the dev team in producing the most immersive simulation ?

Would it be possible to implement Open XR as the VR rendering system in the IL-2 engine?

It seems from the reviews and MSFS successful implementation that it is a very efficient VR motor.

I think IL-2 BoX’s VR implementation is far better than either MSFS or DCS at the current time so would be wary of messing with it. I’m not saying it can’t be improved further but seeing the angst amongst the MSFS PC community after Update 5 I am a little wary.

If it ain’t t broke, don’t fix it.

FS2020 has way better performance than IL2 in VR, specially after the last update.

I have a 3090, i9 10900K and FS2020 runs smooth and looks amazing, IL2 still I need to compromise with settings to make it run smooth, so definitely a lot of room for optimization in IL2.

@SCG_Fenris_Wolf , has tested lots of VR headsets in IL2, I would like to hear his opinion on this.

And FS2020 vs. Il-2 is analogous to il2-1946 vs. IL-2 GB graphics wise, especially the terrain.

If you have a WMR headset you can already install and select openXR as the runtime component inside of steam, in place of steam in it's own settings.  Been possible for quite a while, any other hmd system, good luck with that.   Works fine in IL-2 and DCS, been running it forever since the G-2 came out.

See your equipped with a G-1, what's stopping you?

Yes, but IL-2 itself uses steamvr as its open vr server I believe.

Good to hear; I may have to give it another shot then. I got MSFS2020 last year, then in December I got my VR set and haven't flown non-VR since... However in MSFS I couldn't get anything better than a slideshow, even at minimum graphics. Glad to hear that's improved!

Wow! My experience is on the contrary. 3950x 32gb 2070S here with quest 2. I managed to get solid 72fps with acceptable settings in IL-2 but MSFS? I do not even get solid 60fps on 2d 1080p.

does 3090 make this much of a difference than?

I started using the openVR AMD FSR mod and IL-2 is better than ever now. So as much as openXR is a better api I actually do not want to give up my performance / quality boost which I have recently got.

I wish I could do the same with DCS but it already runs openXR and I do not like the performance there.

DcS uses steamvr/openvr i believe like il-2, not openxr. At least that is my experience...

I have the standalone version. It does not use the steamvr/openvr. But it supports both if you  have the steam version it goes to that path the but for the standalone version I could not manage to force it to openvr. It detects oculus and goes openXR.

Il-2 needs steamVR since it only supports openvr.

My reverb g2 with the standalone client always boots up steamvr even thus wmr is set to the openxr runtime. Interesting lol

hey that's interesting. I really want to try the AMD FSR mod with DCS. It helped me a lot with IL-2. My 2070 super is just at the border of nice frame rate so little bit of head rooom helps me to get there. i wish I knew how to force my copy to do that.

I was planning to get 3080 and forget VR problems but yeah things turned out to go all the way south in gpu pricing.

I have a Samsung Odyssey (also uses WMR). How do you do this?

Once you have it set up via the openXR app, there's now a setting to select it as your run time engine within the regular SteamVR settings, installing it will automatically put the setting in steam, it's all automatically integrated, but you need to select it as the run time app within Steam.

I see the openXR is now integrated directly into WMR by default, just built a new machine with win11.  You need to install the controlling program if you want to have access to settings, basically reprojection, on, off, or auto.  SteamVR will show in advanced settings which is the current selected runtime, think they call it WMRopenXR now.  Nothings ever a magic bullet, but last machine it did provide a slightly sharper image overall.  Easy and painless enough to switch back and forth to try it.  Currently using the steam runtime, seems to me the reprojection runs more reliable.
