Hi all ?,

I want to buy or building myself a new computer.

What are good hardware:

Processor: which are good?

Memory, i know about 16Gig?

Graphic card: which cards are good?

Im not going for the top model, but a pc that i can play comfortly the game.

Thanks in advance

The first thing you should be aware of is the current graphics card shortage.

Prices for mid-high end GPUs are currently between 150%-250% higher than they should be and many high end cards are out of stock.

It may be wise to buy a cheper card now and wait for the crisis to pass before you buy the card you want.

I highly recommend Tom's Hardware. It has good reviews and also articles such as:

Best PC Builds for Gaming, Streaming and Productivity

Which can help pick out gear and a general sense of prices. However, @[DBS]Browning is very right about the cost of video cards. I had a new machine built for me less than a year ago, and used my old Radeon RX 580 as a place holder, expecting prices to go down once the next generation came out. But prices have actually increased on the older generations due to demand and (apparently) chip shortages.

See also the hardware folder in this forum.

The global chip shortage has an effect on not just videocards - expect to pay premium on everything that includes some kind of electronics - from GPUs to monitors and even cars. You've really picked the worst time possible for building your own PC.

If you still want to go ahead, I'm sure that we can give some good advice though :salute:. Regarding RAM, I would indeed recommend 16GB. For the other stuff, we need a bit more info:

- Do you plan to use VR?

- What do you think is "comfortably play the game"? Is it minimum graphics with a constant 30fps, is it max graphics with 60fps or something in between? I'm not looking for exact numbers, but what are roughly your expectations?

- What's your budget? If you don't have a fixed budget, what do you expect to expend?

- Are you going to do other demanding things than play IL2?

Just to be sure, you do know that CPU, GPU and RAM is only half of it, right? Depending on which CPU and GPU you choose, you have to pick a motherboard that supports both and a PSU that can deliver enough power. Perhaps some additional cooling solution too. Oh, and of course an SSD. Don't buy HDDs anymore, unless you know what you're doing.

Hoi, thanks already all for your info.

Im using Track Ir for years now.

I like fps constant at 60fps and like to play on best graphics.

Budget around 800 euros

I only play Sturmovik, no other games, somethimes i use photoshop 6.

The specs i have now are:

Processor
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2300 CPU @ 2.80GHz
Video Card
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti
RAM
8.0 GB
Operating System
Windows 10

I like to go for better

Greetings,

I'd suggest:

GTX 1660 ti (or 1050ti as a more budget option, 1070 would also be ok)

Ryzen 3600X

Any AM4 slot motherboard and 8-16GB of suitable RAM

A PSU suitable for your needs (Google for a PSU calculator)

Spare cash can be spent on a SSD

That should be in your budget.

The GPU options are a little weak compared to the excellent CPU, but such are the times we live in at the moment. You may wish to upgrade the GPU in 12-24 months, when prices might be back to normal.

Any chance you can wait and save a bit more?  Alder Lake(Intel is coming out Q4 supposedly), and that could drive some cpu prices down.  Save you a bit of money.

I really hope GPU prices return somewhat to reasonable, but I know that could take some time.

I have decided to wait even though my system is crap, I refuse to pay these crazy gpu prices.

In my opinion your best bet is to buy a second hand pc on Ebay with the specs you want.

*shameless advertisement follows*

For example, I am selling my old IL-2 pc with the following spec and I've been advised by a tech friend that I could get about £800 for it given current market, but I am asking for £700. I'm not suggesting you buy mine, I live in the UK anyway not Belgium (if that is where you live, not just where you fly?) but it might give you a better idea of what spec you can afford.

Processor

i5 6600k (k denotes overclockable) quad core 3.5 GHz, 3.9 GHz Turbo

Memory

16 Gb (2 x 8 Gb dual channel) DDR4 2133 MHz

Graphics

Asus Nvidia GTX 1060 6 Gb  (it is stated as being good for VR, but in my experience it will struggle with IL-2 in VR, but plenty good enough for a monitor)

Storage

120 Gb SSD (M.2. NVMe) boots Windows and programs very fast

1000 Gb HD

Optical Drive

Blu ray player / DVD writer / CD writer

It was originally bought from Currys PC World here in the UK, it is an Acer Predator G3 and has a good case that runs cool and quiet.

A pc like this will be plenty good enough for IL-2 on a monitor, but if you are wanting to play in VR (and believe me, IL-2 is amazing in VR) then I would suggest getting a stop-gap pc and waiting for the prices to come down before upgrading GPU. I assembled my current pc (see my signature) earlier this year and managed to get a RTX 2080ti 11 Gb for about £650 second hand on Ebay. I doubt if the prices have come down since then, more likely the opposite.

Anyway, sorry folks for my little advert, send me a message if anyone is interested!

With your budget probable best cost performance is Intel Core i5-11400F, with a premium motherboard whose Power Limit don't cause Turbo clock limitation this CPU yields about 85% of Ryzen 5600X performance, costing the i5+motherbard less than only Ryzen 5600X CPU. Need an good aftermarket cooler.

For VGA at least GTX 1660 Super.

Memory 16 GB (2x8GB) 3200, 3600.

I've been using an MSI 1660Ti  for about three years now. It does run IL-2 very well even at high settings. It won't do VR as well, at least in my limited experience with it.

As others mentioned if you can wait, prices should start coming down allowing you to get more for your money. When that'll be, who can be sure?

Exactly five days after I buy something that cost twice what it will in five days. :)

I got my ryzen 5600x bundled with a liquid cooler for only like $350 from Newegg. The performance gap between ryzen and intel on desktop is large due to ipc.

Usually my experience also. Those experiences though have taught me not to be an early adopter.

With ddr5 coming in force soon and the gpu/ semiconductor prices being overinflated at the moment, it's a good idea to wait bit.

The CPU market is pretty much stabilized now, but other components are all over the place.

Except for the overinflated GPU market, I don't think the price of other components will come down.

All big semiconductor suppliers are still hiking prices due to increase in price and shortages in the raw materials market.

It could go both ways.

Microsoft officials stated we haven’t hit the bottom of the semiconductor crisis yet and that prices will stay absurd until some time 2023.

So waiting for better prices may take a long breath.

So you play with monitor, but what resolution 1080p, 1440p, 2160p?

This and the use of clouds&MSAA will determine your GPU needs.

Regarding CPU, since your goal is 60fps at the highest detail I would not spend too much on it. Just go to the 11600K (255$) with stock cooler. And if one day you want to go further you can put a better cooler and do some overclock.

Here you will find some recommendations for PCs for VR, in your case they don´t apply since requirements for playing with monitor are lower. But perhaps one day you decide to go to VR...

I think the i5-11600K has higher single thread mark and cost less than the 11400F.

Loook at this table and short it by Thread Mark: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/CPU_mega_page.html

i5-11600K (or KF) don't cost less than i5-11400F, is $286 x $180 in e.g. Newegg (Intel SRP $247 x $157).

11600K (or KF) has an overall ~5% better gaming performance than 11400F.*

The thing is that an ~$286 CPU maybe don't fit in the OP ~$950 (800 EUROS) budget for an upgrade kit with new CPU, mobo, RAM, VGA and maybe PSU, hence i5-11400F became the alternative - of Intel 11ª (fiasco) Generation is the CPU that have better improvement over 10ª Generation counterpart.

* But to buy i5-11600K for $286 better buy Ryzen 5600X for $290, that have an 4-5% better gaming performance.

OK, I didn´t know those prices. I was using the prices shown in the Passmark megalist.

It would be interesting to have more test with the SYN_Vander benchmark with the 11600K and 11400F so we can see how they perform for the particularities of IL-2.

As you know, general gaming performance doesn´t translate directly to IL-2 performance.

Hellooo,

I have a pc in mind with the following specs:

Intel® Core™ i5-10400F - 6 Cores

MSI H410M-A PRO

Crucial ValueRAM 8GB DDR4-2666, gonna make that to 16Gb

NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB

SSD 480GB Kingston A400

What about that ?. I know its not a porsche, but i only play Sturmo.

Greets,

FH
