Hi,

I have Oculus first module and I cannot see anything while playing this game, and cannot really enjoye anything without the motion controllers... So yeah being first buyer of new tech is not always that smart.

So, I was thinking buying HP Reverb G2 which for this moment has the best resolution so I can finally spot my target while aiming down the sight in dogfiths and finally enjoy motion controllers in other AAA games.

What do you think, is any one here with these VR headsets and are they worth it?
Or should I buy other VR headset model?

What computer do you have? A Reverb G2 needs a 9th-11th gen i5-i9/Zen 3 cpu paired with an RTX 2080 ti, or RTX 3070-3090. You'll also need 32 GB of fast ram for an optimal experience.

But yes, the G2 is great. Way better than the older headsets. I just upgraded from the Rift S and it is much better.

Lol, no it doesn't. 8600k at 5gig and a 1080Ti here, if you can run 45fps without nausea it runs the G2 like a champ. Med a/c density in Pat's generator, nary a hiccup. :)

I had the HP Reverb, the Reverb G2 and Vive Pro2.

If your PC is ok but not the fastest HP Reverb, and run  it at 60Hz

If you have a monster PC Vive Pro2 its just amazing, the clarity its better than Reverb G2.

Your system is basically just below what I recommended. I know there is basically no difference between coffee lake up to rocket lake if you can get it running over 5ghz. Still, I cant deal with 45 fps on the g2...its very choppy unlike my oculus rift s was. The ghosting and warping is also a lot worse. Everyone may vary some though.

I would also add that I've used a quest 2 and if you can tolerate facebook, it is a great option because it is fairly clear but the ease of only one cable or even wireless usage is really great compared to the g2.

So does the quest 2 is able to run all the AAA titles at good performance and graphics? I was sure its low budget VR headset for indie\mobile like titles.
Also its hard for me to go for oculus once more after what I had to "suffer" with their first model (the fact they did not include the motion controls at first)

The quest 2 performs about 10% worse than the reverb g2, but it is definitely great for what it is: standalone vr that can also be used with a pc. I prefer the g2, but its cable is known to be fragile, it gets hot, has a small sweet spot, and the cable is also not ergonomic. Try both, return the one you dont like. I also think oculus has much better asw software.

I am using a Vive Pro 2 and quite happy with it. However I was using Reverb G2 and it is a great headset for flight sims and a very reasonable price.

I would heartily recommend the Reverb G2.

You mean becomes hot where the eyes are? Oh its a big issue for me :(

Did you notice any heat inside where the eyes are with Reverb G2?

Not really. When I’m taking the HMD off after 1.5-2 hours of use, it is warm to the touch, but not hot. I hold it close to where the cable attaches to the HMD and that’s the only area where I can feel a bit of warmth.

Of course, when “I’m” running hot, there is a period of fogging on the lenses, but it has been rare and clears up when everything equalizes in terms of temperature. This has happened only once in IL-2. If it happens on the rare occasion, it happens when I’m racing where I’m exerting more effort.

Could you send me the data of your monitor, and maybe your startup.cfg's graphics section via PM please?

I want to know whether I can reproduce your case in which you don't see the warp of the picture.

Currently, I'd say Vive Pro 2 is the best, especially since it draws a clear but softer picture (no pixel crawl as in the G2). But there's warping of the aspect ratio (using a 21:9 monitor here), so until that is fixed, I'd say G2 for IL-2. All other games, hands down the Vive Pro 2 (make sure to be able to try & be able to return it, as some folks had issues with theirs).

Hey guys, so at the end I have bought HP Reverb G2.
I understand I need to download some config file to enjoy VR? When running by default my seat position is way too far and the pilot seat just clips through my point of view, and the sight is still a little bit blurry, not as much as with Oculus first model but still.

And guys, I had so much fun playing VTOL. Whoever likes simulators and did not try VTOL (Steam) go give it a chance. It has tutorials, missions, and most importantly everything is voiced over which is a rare thing nowdays in simulator games.

Anyway if some one could point me to any guide where and how to configure my HP Reverb G2 I will really appreciate it.

It looks like you just use the VR controllers for cockpit interaction, instead of a HOTAS? Sounds... weird to me.

Negative reviews mention lack of HOTAS support with none on the horizon.

Zeev, these are the best instructions for setting up your G2;

Going forward, with regards to recommending the best VR HMD, IMHO I would suggest people go for an HMD that supports eye tracking.  Eye tracking requires a less powerful CPU & GPU to run at 90 FPS, thus the over all cost for many to upgrade their systems should be less when you factor in the cost of also buying a top-end GPU to run it properly in all it's glory.

Move your head to wherever you want it by default, and then press the "Save view position" button (or whatever it's called, can't remember its name, I believe it's F10 by default). Then press the "center view" button (same thing, default numpad 5 I think), and you should be fine :)

*If* you don't already have a VR-ready system. I've got an RTX2060, which is just enough, so I went with the relatively cheap Quest 2. Works like a charm.

@Drum thanks for the mention!

Btw, unfortunately eye-tracking is not compatible with IL-2 and I am 100% sure it will not be until there's an engine upgrade:

Would need VRSS(2) for it, and preferably a thorough OpenXR implementation, but at DX11 requires forward rendering with MSAA. IL-2 has recently switched to deferred rendering...

..if I missed anything, please correct me if wrong, and how-so.. :(

P.S. This is the link to apply to VRSS(2) and get your title to enable FixFovR as well as DynFovR

You're correct it was the VRSS(2) Nvidia is releasing soon, I should have made that distinction sorry.  ?  And yes, Nvidia said it would require MSAA forward rendering... Poop, that changes things going forward with IL-2 for me now, what a let down.  :-(

No need to apologize, honestly these things are so unclear and the jungle of features floating left and right make it incredibly confusing to figure wether this works for that or not or what the ifs and whens are.

Hey Don, you have used the Index as well if I remember correctly. How big of an upgrade is the Pro 2 from the Index?  Is the Pro 2 100% SteamVR compatible or does it need another intermediary program.  Happy with my Index, just curious if an $800 price tag is worth the upgrade.

I would wait to upgrade until the new headsets next year. They might be something like this one.

It is a nice upgrade. When I was using the Index I ended up using my Reverb G2 for flight sims, and Index for made for VR games like Half Life Alyx and Medal of Honor- mainly due to the superior tracking and controllers on the Index. I used the Reverb G2 for flight sims due to better cockpit clarity.

Vive Pro 2 has taken the place of both - I get that good cockpit clarity along with the great tracking of the Index base stations and controllers. Plus the Vive Pro 2 has better horizontal FOV than Reverb G2, more in line with Index horizontal FOV.

Vive Pro 2 does require the use of the Vive Console software to go along with Steam VR. It is a pretty small program.

For those that already have an Index along with it's base stations and controllers, Vive Pro 2 is a nice upgrade.

Thanks for the info, may need to consider it. I'm trying to hold out for more news on an Index 2.

So, if you were ONLY running IL2/flight sims would your recommend the G2 or the Vive Pro 2? Not much interest in VR outside of flight.

Reverb G2.

Vive Pro 2 has higher native resolution but you really won't be able to take advantage of it with today's performance and equipment.

It is not enough to justify the higher cost of the VP2.

Got it, thanks. Planning on a near-monster to full monster FNW machine for Christmas (order) and whenever that will be delivered. Then I will make my first dip into VR. The tech seems to have matured enough to take the venture. I will revisit this thread after the New Year, however, to see if the recommendations on headsets have changed at that time.

Me too. I'm just going to wait until the index 2 comes out. No sense upgrading my index until that comes out.

There is no Index 2 announced nor close afaik.

The last "Index 2" was the Steam Deck. Valve always stuck to one project at a time so far.

The next Index 2 may be called differently and when asked, didn't Gabe mention that it would become a standalone similar to the Q2, and they'd use the research from Steam Deck for this?

Posted (edited)

There is information there that Valve has filed a number of patents for a VR HMD. Some of those suggest a stand alone and/or wireless version.

And yes in a recent interview it was suggested the the work done on Steamdeck does or will related to any new HMD, but they were very vague about how or why.

I'd like to see what they have up their sleeves.
