[80 years ago today] "• The Lavochkin-Gorbunov-Gudkov LaGG-3 begins entering service with the Soviet VVS. Although underpowered and outclassed by the Bf-109, it proves to be popular with most Soviet pilots in comparison with their previous aircraft, though some pilots will loathe it. 6,500 are built. It will prove an important upgrade to Soviet aviation before being superseded by the Yak-3 and Lavochkin La-5.
