Voyager Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Wanting GPU prices slowly drop, and trying to decide if it is worth upgrading now, or holding off for the next generation of GPUs. My system is a Ryzen 5800X, with 32 GB of DDR4 3600 Cas 16/19/19 ram, and a Geforce GTX 1080 Ti. The headset is a Vibe Pro 2 at High settings at 2900x2900 super sampling. I'm aiming to be able to run the game at 45+ FPS lows, with Unlimited building render distance, 150km horizon, Ultra and the various terrain details set to 4x. Clouds High, Currently, I can do it, just with the Dynamic Resolution Factor set to 0.7, so I'm wondering if a 3080 or 3090 would get me there, or I could expect to still be just a bit short? It works great for WWI era fighting, but is still a bit fuzzy for good WWII flight, so if a 3090 is still marginal, I might as well stick to WWI era stuff for the next year or so and see what the next generation brings, but if it's enough to do the job, I'm wondering if I should just go for it now?
chiliwili69 Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 In terms of CPU performance you are well covered, so you should only worried about the settings that affect the GPU load, which are basically resolution (2900x2900), MSAA and clouds. I don´t fully understand what you mean by "45+ fps lows". Also, you didn´t mention if you used Motion Compensation ON/OFF. I have not too much experience with the Dynamic Resolution Factor, I just tested some years ago but I preferred not to used it but work on adjusting other settings. I used the VivePro2 with my 3080 having the Viveconsole at Ultra (2448x2448@90Hz) and adjusting SteamVR-SS% to have from 2900X2900 to 3100x3100. Since I don´t like Motion Compensation (just me, others like it) my goal was to be at 90fps, but the 3080 can not achieve that, specially with clouds. So the fps are in the range 90 to 45, and then is when I have the double image blurr in moving obejcts (because droped frames). Then, when I decreased the SteamVR-SS% to resolution in the range of 2500x2500 (visuals were still good) and I was able to keep 90fps with no clouds. But if your target is to be at 45fps, then a 3080 can clearly sustain that with your settings and avoid to use Dynamic Resolution Factor. 1
Voyager Posted July 7, 2021 Author Posted July 7, 2021 Ok. That's good to hear. I'm not using Motion Compensation, mostly because I don't like the artifacts, but I'm not bothered by the double vision effect, so as long as it stays at or above 45 fps, I'm good. Actually with the VP2, it feels like I can get down to 30 in Il-2 and still be ok. I wonder if that's because it supports the 120hz mode? Understand what you mean on the Dynamic Resolution Factor. I'm using it here, mostly because I've found, with the VP2, it ends up being a trade between pixelation and blurring. By having the headset resolution high, and the render resolution low, I end up with an effect that feels more like bad eyesight than pixelation, but I think I'm getting about the same resolving power out of it. Have not done rigorous testing of it, though. The other wrinkle is DCS. Haven't gotten around to tuning it, but it eats vRam like candy. Part of why I've been reluctant to go for the 3080. And the 3090 is not that much faster, but it is a lot more expensive. Definitely good for thought. Thank you, Harry Voyager
dburne Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 Same thing I have found @Voyager. Vive Pro 2 is way better with Motion Compensation off in the Vive Console. At 45 fps my experience is very good and smooth, even dips to 30 occasionally ( in DCS) also as you have seen and still not bad. Mostly I am at 45 fps though. I have a feeling it is still using some of Steam motion smoothing although it does not show it being available for the VP2. There is something going on anyway.
Voyager Posted July 8, 2021 Author Posted July 8, 2021 I suppose part of me wants to wait until DDR5 and the next gen of GPUs have gone live and build a new Goliath rig with a full water cooling loop. (Just using an AIO for my CPU atm.) Thinking a 4090/7900 XT and a Zen 4/Raptor Lake should have enough horsepower to run Il-2, DCS and MSFS in VR with all the bells and whistles going for a long time. I'll have to play a lot more with the VP2, but it so feels like it hits that clarity threshold too, with 20-25 pixels per degree. Still needs to get to around 60 to match human perception, but that's still two more doublings away.
Ribbon Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 (edited) I run i7 10700k with rtx3080 on pretty much ultra and mostly maxed out settings with Reverb G2 100% resolution in steamVR which is 3100x3100 per eye if i remember correctly. Smoothing render option enabled which locks it in 45fps range with really smooth gameplay, with smoothing disabled i get 65-90fps but it stutters bellow 75fps so option was 45fps with smoothing or going down on native/advertised reverb g2 resolution (50-60% steamVR) but with less edge to edge clarity.
