Jaggies and shimmering

Hi all,

I've problems getting a comfortable antialiasing, like that I was accustomed with in IL-2 1946 (a simple 4x, but external, since that game didn't have an internal AA - on the contrary of this, which does not allow any AA set by NVidia Control Panel).

Attached you may find the visual annoyance I'm experiencing, my video settings and specs. Thanks for any help.

I would recommend checking your video card settings to make sure those settings are compliant with your settings in the game... over-ride your default video card settings in favour of the game settings.  This is the most likely cause of the problem.

Or you could try a different version of AA other than SMAA... there are several options.

I don't have a customized profile for CloD, just use Global Settings, which leave to application the control. What can be wrong in the Global Settings that affects game?

I don't know what your global settings are for your video card, so I can't tell you.

But there is something in your settings which is causing this problem.

Other people do not get this.

Are you running the latest drivers?

Would suggest you also look at changing your refresh rate to 59/60 hz.

You could also try unchecking Vsync.

It may take some experimentation to get the result you want.

Didn't you see the three images I posted in my previous post? THOSE are my Global Settings.

I noticed it in the videos - that's why I tried to ask.

Of course. But it also takes some targeted suggestions, because otherwise the number of possible attempts and combinations is infinite.

Next to that there is an option for Settings (right of where you select FXAA/MSAA in your screenshot in the first post). Open it and try out the different settings. But I see you already have it pretty high.

I have it at SMAA with Edge Detection = Color and Preset = High. No shimmering.

AA in NCP is set to application controlled.

Another thing I can think of is resolution. Is the game set to your monitor‘s native resolution? I sometimes run it in 1080p on my 1440p monitor. It looks bad.

I tried "High", but, as might be expected, got worse.

As shown above, I set up DSR, which brings the 1440p super-resolution back to the native 1080p of my screen.

I'm afraid there is absolutely nothing to be done in my case. It's a shame, because I really like this game: for the sounds, the self-shadowing, the clickable cockpit, the flight models (apart from the take-off!) and the damage models, the existence of Italian aircraft and the related speech ( even if, as an Italian, I can't understand much), the LODs hit the spot (seeing in BoS the bombs under the wings that appear and disappear across the 250 meter threshold is one of those things that makes me say "yuck!" ), and so on.

I see. To be honest I hadn‘t realized that was what you were using. I‘ve never used DSR in CloD so don‘t know if the game handles it well or not.
Have you tried setting the in-game resolution to your monitor‘s and disabling dynamic scale resolution in NCP? Maybe try it to compare if it is any better? Or adjust the smoothness until you get something that is more acceptable?

It handles DSR superbly.

Yes, I have. I started just from there. I enabled DSR later, gaining a significant improvement in image quality.

I tested (besides the default 33%) 0% and 100%. Needless to say that 0% was worse, whilst 100% "blurred" the shimmering jaggies, but I could still see them under the "blur".?

Bummer…

I‘m afraid I can‘t think of anything else…

One thing I noticed though in my game is that when I paise to look at the plane (like your screenshot) I see the same as you do, with the pointed out jaggies and shimmering. But when the picture is moving, there is no problem with it. At least I don‘t notice it.

The 'jaggies' you mention are not to be expected in the game... as mentioned most people do not have this problem.

Considering you have a system which is sufficient to run the game, there is something else which is causing this problem.

You say '...there is nothing to be done...', I very much doubt that is the case.

Your system is not unusual or out of the ordinary.  So the problem is a question of finding what in your setup is incorrect.

Do you have any third party video software program running when you play?  A program which 'enhances' video or adds something?

See this thread to determine what programs are running:

Nothing I'm aware of. Oddly enough, both other games of the IL-2 series ('46 and BoS) do not have issues of this kind, like CoD.

As a sidenote, it looks I'm not alone! Looking at one of the numerous video about this game on Youtube, I noticed first one attached, where I highlighted the very same issue I have. I think that many simply don't notice it! I may add that it looks to me much more pronounced on old plane 3D models (like Bf-110), while it can be barely noticed on the recent ones (e.g.: Spitfire Vb).

In the second image attached, you can't notice any visual defect; I think this latter is recorded by a professional which, in addition to very close-ups of planes (that obviously look great), used some trick to smooth aircraft profiles, without making them too "blurry".

Many CLIFFS videos on the internet date from before we added AA to the game.

Prior to AA, these types of effects were common.

So even though you can see examples on youtube, that doesn't mean when the player uses AA in an up to date version of the game you will see these commonly.

The only programs I see there, (and I am not a dictionary of 3rd party software) are:

Greenshot:   Screencap program... do you need this?  The game has its own screencap.  Try turning it off.

NVidia:  Obviously this needs to be running...  I still have to wonder if something in the configs for your standard setup is conflicting with CoD.

As has been mentioned before, I would recommend you use the same game resolution as you use for desktop.

Can you increase your desktop resolution to the same as you have for the game?

Did you try unchecking VSync?

Hello greybeard

Can you record and post a short video from your game with examples of your views of your aircraft cockpit... externals such as wings and and other aircraft around you.

Thanks

Yes, I did, with no avail.

Sorry, I'm unable to record video.

With current video settings I see quite well cockpit, wings of my plane and close aircraft. The problems increase with distance from observer. There's something wrong with rendering in this game, though, that I couldn't see from times of the good old Red Baron II/3D, where I couldn't have any AA: same shimmering and jagging. It looks like Cliffs of Dover's internal AA doesn't work properly and only partially. For instance, I notice that shimmering jaggies repeats only for some parts of terrain and ground object (e.g.: radio antennas in the desert), besides all aircraft, whilst ground vehicles are exempt of it.

Thanks for your continued help.

Your NVidia GTX970 card comes with the GForce Experience software that allows you to record video.

If you open that program it details the default key you press to start recording... the video shows up in the folder you designate.

The fact you don't know about this software makes me wonder if you have set up the NVidia video preferences correctly.

I would recommend you open the program and read through the instructions for setup.
