Developer Diary, Part 68

This is going to sound like a bit of a whinge, but where is the value in or loyalty to the people who plonked down their cash a year ago when every Johnny-come-lately is "rewarded" with founder status without ever having taken any risk, put their money where their mouth was or actually supported a fledgling development?

The people who truly pre-ordered, before there was a downloadable product were the first to the gold in the mountain. We found the gold. The rest came when we pointed them to the gold, but they didn't find it. So extending the founders tag to everyone who purchased after the gold was unearthed really doesn't make sense in the sense they didn't "found" anything, they just waited along the river banks further downstream until it found them.

I've never been an elitist or considered myself to be special, but I did enjoy the Founders tag. I think it showed a certain leap of faith for the many of us who bought a product sight unseen. And a lot of us did buy it that first weekend. Even though this sim was being built on an existing game, there were still many unknowns. I do think there are times when one should be rewarded for taking a risk. And to be honest, spending close to $100 of my hard earned cash on an unknown was a risk to me. But if 1C/777 chooses to do another early access sim again that I find interesting, I'm hoping I'll be able to be there in the beginning. Like the others have said, I do think there should be some value to taking that risk that isn't extended to those who chose to wait on the sidelines to see how it all worked out.

"Adding FW 190 to early access would have been dull and even boring for you."

This is a golden thought, really. And it goes great along with "we're ( obviously ) too stupid to use Full Mission Builder".

I don't get it. I bought a cat in a bag for a hundred bucks, because I was promised that if my PC can handle RoF, it's capable of running BoS. Later it appeared it's not capable of doing it, so I had to rebuilt my machine completely. Processor, graphic card, ram, motherboard. That was the first bomb. Anxiuosly waited for news about promised FMB sometime in near future. Second bomb: skinning will be an issue. Third bomb: university degree education and a decade in skinning and mission building for various project as a hobby - I am surely too dumb as the rest of the flying community to do that. Now this lovely nuke. FW190, the reason for many people to cash out extra for the "founder and supporter" status - and the Development team states releasing it will be too dull... This is beyond belief.

Sure it will be too dull! We have only one fighter in two variants, variety is surely not needed! Too dull, yes! Well done indeed, or just a badly expressed joke?

Time to withdraw my suport for this title. It was less and less of it from the first time "alpha" was available -it slowly melted like the snow at the end of winter. Now it's gone completely.

Good luck with the development, I see it's going to a great place. Time to contact 1C directly DELETED NEEDLESS JIBE AT DEVS.

Bravo.

Can only assume this post is meant  be taken with the same humour as the original "dull FW190" joke Lol ;)

Zak, you have a poor sense of humour. Maybe the discussion about the FMB last week and skinning (a couple of weeks before that) was the same kind of DELETED joke that this is? Keep taking things from the original IL2 (we bought this for) DELETED that's real nice, thanks.

Let me guess. The motto of the 9./JG54 is "We don't understand"?

We fly for Zee Germans because we love the aircraft and not for some stupid ideology. Without teams like ours you'd have noone to fight against. I - personally - never took a single Russian aircraft for a spin here; they collect virtual rust in my hangar, so yeah, I went for premium package due to 190 being announced there. And here we are, shortly before supposed release of a product not entirely resembling the declarations regarding it. We have one fighter in two variants so far. Awesome.

Constant changes of development plans, promises that end up to be just promises and nothing else plus applauding bunch of people here is a litle too much to handle. I am not gonna debate with anyone about importance of skinning for squads - obviously some don't understand the concept, including "hello kitty skin" guy somewhere above - there were polls on the subject, people spoke, devs don't care. Same with FMB, they don't care. Most of you don't care either and that's ok. But many care about it, declarations were made, dev minds got changed - i have the right to feel my expectations were not met. Because they are not, according to initial Dev statements.

Oh, we understand. It's you who doesn't.

Stop it everyone.

@JG54 - keep your comments civil, in the forums and in PMs. As mentioned above, you are allowed to disapprove or disagree with the devs' decisions, but you cannot do it in the manner you are attempting tonight.

I have no qualms about banning people for offensive behaviour they think is behind the scenes. If someone receives nasty PMs, report them like any other post.

Can I just add, it should have been clear that Zak's comment about not boring you with the 190 was intended as a joke. It's regrettable that you did not take it that way, but then, everyone is different, I suppose.

The devs are entitled to use humour in their posts. If you are unsure whether it is intended ironically or otherwise, check with someone else before blowing your top and being unpleasant.

Oh, ci capiamo. Sei tu che non lo fa. CANCELLATO Supporto contattato CANCELLATO.

I think you can boycott your expectations for a product when you believe it hasn't lived up to a certain level of the reputation that you associated with the production company at the time you invested your money.

I'm guessing this is a English-as-2nd-language thing?

If, for example, I were to boycott McDonalds I would refuse to buy their food.

If I walked into a McDonalds and bought a Big-Mac and refused to eat it, do you think McDonalds would care?

They still have my cash in their till.

I guess when you are so emotionally involved it's had for some people to be clear.

For those skim reading through.....

The main points which I have seen and agree with are:

1)The Russian's have all their aircraft, the German's do not.

Apart from feeling left out/ short changed, this also means that people can learn how to fly and bomb (Pe2) all the Russian aircraft, giving the Russian's a distinct advantage (especially in MP)

2) Everyone getting a founders tag irrespective of when they bought the game (provided that they buy it before the game goes full version)

On principal I have major issues with it, which is surprising because I don't actually care about having a tag.

I am just against the idea of "everybody gets a trophy"

The tag was seen by some as an added incentive, to get in early and have that recognition of being a "Founder", and so I can understand that they would feel upset.

They bought the game when it was just a "pipe dream", without any evidence that anything would come of it (no early access to play etc).

3) The developers changing their mind.

I can understand both sides of this one.

In that it's one thing to want to be able to do "xyz" and its another to be actually able to do it.

Perhaps the developers bought off more than they could chew, when they said what they were planning to do.

Or perhaps they felt it too much effort (cost and or time) for what they perceive to be a minority????

Me personally, I can't really see myself building missions etc, but being a MP person i have enjoyed the fruits of others labour. So I hope that in the near future, they give people who have the skills the ability to create their own missions.

In regards to skins, I don't have my own squad etc, but I like the idea of each squad having their own (non-offensive, historic looking skins, so no red-bull racing etc), but I guess unless there will be servers allowing 60+ players its almost a mute point.

Because some may have to choose the other side in order to balance the teams (which means that they either don't play on that server, or those who choose the other side will feel left out of the squad).

Perhaps unique skins cause server issues like they did on il2 (from memory it caused a dramatic increase in data usage, but I'm happy to be corrected).

Something that people need to realise, is that the developers after a game is released can simply walk away (ref to a degree clod and every other game that the developers screwed up and put into the too hard basket).

So it is in EVERYBODY'S best interest to be constructive in our criticism, to be patient, and unfortunately at times to accept that for now anyway some things won't happen.

Like me none of you are rich, so we can't simply throw lots of money the developers way and to make things happen.

Which means we really only have 2 choices, be both patient and constructive, or to go play WarThunder/ World of Warplanes etc.

Me personally I would rather play this game in its current unfinished form, than either of those 2 games (I have tried War Thunder).

Regards

About the whole Founders status thing ...

I didn't expect to be bringing this up again - I'm not personally that put out by it but, as mentioned above, its the principle of it I find slightly annoying.

I look at it kinda like this ...

I'm like a unit trust angel investor. I agree to the terms of the investment because I see value in it for me that makes the loss of use of those funds over the term of the investment worthwhile.

My returns include:

- the ability to have some small degree of influence over the final product (this is not guaranteed);

- the ability to become familiar with the aircraft ahead of the war (this is really not that useful as FM changes and incremental feature enhancements effectively neutralise it);

- a sim that is more true to life than just about anything else available right now despite its alpha status (this is actually pretty big - I love RoF but I like using the vertical, so the more modern a/c in BoS appeal to me - and DCS remains vapour-ware); and

- automatic access to some of what will be DLC without the incremental extra charges levied on retail customers.

- OK I'll admit the status itself is (while merely a token) sorta satisfying :)

The second-last one is, for me, what makes the choice financially valid. Consider this: the $ I paid for BoS sight unseen becomes worth more over time in missed opportunity costs, inflation and interest it would have otherwise earned elsewhere.

Now Johnny rocks up a week before release and puts down the same cash and gets exactly the same return without having incurred any of the built-in expenses over the life of the investment, and completely avoids the attendant risk of any investment - that it may flop completely and become a write-off. Add to that use of the term "loyalty" in the announcement and I felt I needed to at least say something.

Am I going to stop playing? - duh! of course not

Does this diminish the product? - no way

Do I feel ripped off? - not really - I got what I paid for

Do I feel like my loyalty to and support for the team has been undervalued? - a little bit, yes

Like I said originally, I almost feel like a whiner for even mentioning it, but I felt it needed saying.

Now 1C can of course make it up to me by giving me a free pass on all future DLC as a "thank you" for helping make the whole venture possible :) . But this is where we have a problem. Do we, the founders, actually represent what amounts to the vast majority of the target market? I really hope not - or they are screwed, but my gut says we might be unless they do something to BoS to appeal to a wider audience. Commercial reality is they need to make enough revenue to make 1C's much higher risk investment worthwhile which means I'll be paying for all the future updates. Given this, wouldn't it be better to incentivise new "early" adopters some other way so as not to effectively subtract from the worth of a commitment already paid in full by the rest of us?

On the topic of commercial reality, I'd like to ask the guys who are understandably frustrated by as-yet undelivered features, like an FMB, to just chill for a bit and consider what needs to happen for this product to be commercially viable, let alone successful. 1CGS need to drastically grow the player-base and they would be acutely aware of it. Therefore FMB is coming. IT HAS TO BE. These guys are gamers first. They know what made other titles succeed and yet more others fail. Community is a self-propagating thing. Community is what produces sustained interest and growth for software. And mission builders are the farmers of community. Pretty sure 1CGS don't need a lecture on the value of community and how it will benefit their long term sales. But they have to meet sales targets in the initial release to even be given a shot at building a community - or 1C will just take their funding and use it to build yet another spreadsheeting app that is boring as batshit but pays the bills. So they will necessarily reprioritise - not cull - some features which have a high cost of development but have lower initial release value. They need things like eye-candy and accessibility to get more casually interested players to try the game and hopefully become hooked. Hence the current development foci - get something relatively bug free and engaging which looks good enough to receive good press at launch.

Developers get snarky under pressure like the rest of us. So when they receive a lot of negative feedback from the group they consider to hold the most important opinions they become terse and often resort to some sarcasm in responses. Especially considering that for them, and a large proportion of the forum users, English is a second language, _everything_ that reads a little off the first pass should be considered as probably poorly translated.

Things I think _we_ can do now to help ensure the best outcome for 1CGS, and by association us, are to foster the community we constantly cite as the root of all game success. Maybe get a head start on squadron sites. Start on leaderboard code using the RoF API as a guide - sure it may end up being completely different, but (speaking as a software developer) writing APIs and justifying their existence to management is made easier by having an existing client trying to use one.

Can you start on skins without skinning support? - probably. Then you will be ready to roll when it is added. You might also have an easier time encouraging 1CGS to add it if you try to think up solutions to the problems they have in allowing it.

Lastly , I'd like 1CGS to consider allowing access for developers who want to work on this stuff to whatever they can in the way of modding and extension APIs, even if they are private or not yet ready for prime time. We'd like to start helping to build the community side of the BoS success story in parallel with your work to get the game up and ready to launch. The pay-off for BoS is less lag in providing a compelling reason for casual pilots to become hard-core pilots who drop way more coin on enhancing their experience. If given such access I promise you I will not tie up development resources with support requests or bitch about the beta nature of whatever you allow me to see.

Thanks for reading.

I'd like to hear the plans for the Fw 190 availability for those that are Silver owners. Will we be able to purchase the 190 right from the get go when it gets released in or will we have to wait until the full release?

I think they said when it gets in the store you can. So, next month then? I think the rest of the people who don't buy before July can't.

I do concur with the statements regarding the "tag" for founders. I do feel that the founder bar should be reserved for the original backers of the game.

Present another tag for those that want to sponsor the adventure from now on to the finish line. It's the principle of it.

Hey Devs keep trucking on . Thanks for the update.

Keep up the updates and the game!  This game is like a light in the darkness of lameness (sims) with no guns or bad FM's! I am looking forward to this. Don't let the negatives win!

Later it appeared it's not capable of doing it, so I had to rebuilt my machine completely by hand. I had to save up so many UPCs codes, proof of purchases, and coke cans. Pringles containers for the antenna. Processor this professor, seeing Jamie and Cersei is too graphics, so I play cards. Ram another bolt into Rob's mother, I'm board. And then cox stopped my HBO saying I didn't pay. I missed last episode!!! I called up Bank of America and said my direct deposit comes tomorrow but should be today. That was the first bomb. Anxiously waited for news about promised men from the Frays sometime in near future. But rains of castamere all over. I can't believe they have spitfires and red vipers! And no Mountain? Second bomb: skinning will be an issue. Ned was so much better a warden of the north than the Boltons with the lame flayed man. Third bomb: I trained 4 years at maester tower university to get a degree education so I could school kings and crows and its been a decade in skinning and winning, dreadfort, castle building for various projects. I wish Briana could be a hubby - I am surely too dumb as the rest of the flying Targaryen community to rule with clarity to do that putu bantha that you do. Dragons are only good for boom and zooming. I wish they had cannon like the black one in how to train your . . .  But flames? they work best in tunnels, and harrenhals of montezuma to the shores of tripoli. I paid the Iron price like those pirating krakens. Now this lovely nuke. The Mountain, the reason for many people to cash out extra for the "founder and supporter" status - and the Development team states releasing it will be too dull... This is beyond belief. That plane is freakish big and freakish strong. And quicker than you'd expect for a ship of that size.

Sure it will be too dull! The Lannisters have only one fighter in two variants, variety is surely not needed! Jamie with one hand? In season 1 he rocked with his right. Fights too dull, yes! Well done indeed, or just a badly expresso? Bronn's good but he's no Gregor Clegane.

Time to withdraw my support for this title. GRR Martin is writing too slow and the show doesn't follow the books. It was less and less of it from the first time "pilot " was available -it slowly melted like the snow at the end of winter. Now it's gone completely. So much for Winter is coming.

The flightsim community has a reputation of being its own worst enemy.

I fully agree.

What many simmers seem to miss is the fact that real flightsimulationsare a niche'.

This means that anyone who start developeming a flight simulatoir just to earn some money will fail. You really need to be a flightsim addict Yourself inorder to make this a reasonable business.

People simply expects too much and often the loudest screaming people will never be happy with what they get.

I have been into flightsimulators, and "work" as a developer on FSX aircraft addons myself. You really need to be a machocist to both develope flightsims and be present on forums, cause You really often get a beating thats out of proportions to what You try to accomplish.

Personally  find IL-2 BOS very good, considereing it´s a beta version only half finished in it´s beta stage.

Alot of people here seem to miss the fact that we "play" a half finished beta version, maybe because it allready feels very finished.

Both graphics and flightmodel are great - especially the flighmodels feels very believable and I get satisfacturing framerates, even in MP over Stalingrad.

I think it would be fair to ask peolle take a more easy approach and give the developers time to finish their work in the pace and succesion they need to get it right, and I´m sure we will end up with one o the best WW2 flightsims ever produced.

Seeing what ROF has become, makes me confident that we won´t be left with an ill fated attempt.

While it´s always good to push people towards doing more than they thought they could do, one maust also understand that they need to better deliver a rather bugfree, stable release version that is fun for newcomer "Real customers". Additional features can always be added afterwards, and I´m sure they will.

So just because an announced aircraft, that is promised to be in the release version, not quite has been deemed ready for us "early acces" owners, doesn´t mean we have any rights to demand it released before the developers feel it is ready.

In various flighsim forums I have often deen how the commrnity has acted in a way that would take the motivation from most other people, but flightsim developers are often too much flightsimmers to go down on such feedback - luckily for the rest of us.

Be happy with what we have now , cause it´s really not that bad, and look ahead for things that will come and feel happy about that there are people out there that really try to make us happy.

Since WW2 aircraft are a good deal more complex to developer I think the pricetag will be higher. I would not be surpriced if the prices will be double than for ROF aircraft, and I would have a clear understanding if so.

First point: Yes, your machine can run this if you can run RoF. You just have to run minimum. That's a given with any game. You want to play a game with a 7+ year old machine, buy a 5+ year old game. My first gen i7 ran BoS quite well, as well as my GTX 465 - at low settings.

Second point: Skinning has always been an issue, RoF has been that way for years because of cheaters using the particular color for clear throughout the entire paintscheme. Its been an issue in all games from the beginning of using skins, but no game has decided to restrict it because they don't care if someone is cheating. These developers do. Its not something any anti-cheat will be able to pick up, and anti-cheats are so good that titles using them are still experiencing an abundance of cheaters/script kiddies.

Third point: We're getting a FMB, a very capable one that people have been complaining about for years to have. Every FMB prior to this has been easy to use but extremely limited. You're finally getting one that isn't limited, so yeah - you're going to have to know how to use it and pucker up your tail side so much you suck your pants clean through to eject out your face hole when it isn't easy to use because of some wierd universal oxymoron that the internet and gamers are inherently equipped with. We all get the FMB eventually, its only released during the initial early access that it is limited to those who are capable of using it.

Three bombs, but more like little snaps and you are the only one throwing them.

You then complain about receieving two variants of the LuftWaffe's primary fighter. The other fighter you are recieving wasn't even in Stalingrad, so now you are just being silly.  Did you expect another fighter that the LuftWaffe doesn't have? You are getting a fighter that wasn't even in Stalingrad, and you are complaining it isn't ready yet before the game itself is ready for release.

Nice screenshot, but no - you just look like the south side of a north facing Elephant.
