Hi all,

Welcome to the our new developer diary from Team Fusion Simulations! This is the beginning of what we hope will be a more consistent pattern of updating the community to what’s going on behind the scenes, with the aim of releasing one of these each month.

Firstly, an update on TrueSky and VR. While we don’t have any images to show you (yet!), and work is being affected by the ongoing global pandemic, substantial progress has been made on these two major updates. We now have a test version of the game that runs with both TrueSky and VR, enabling our teams to work towards refining these upgrades for public release.

This is huge news for many in community who cannot wait to see what True Sky offers, and in particular to the VR players, who cannot wait to fly in the Battle of Britain and get some virtual hot sand in their eyes flying in the Desert Air War, all in Virtual Reality!

Next is a look at three new single missions recently added in version 5.022.

The first is available for Blitz owners, and is titled Solent Skirmishes. The Solent - the strait of water that separates the Isle of Wight from the English mainland - saw its fair share of combat during the Battle of Britain, and this mission recreates two possible scenarios.

The first skirmish of the mission sees Stab III./JG 27 leading 9./JG 27 in a sweep over the area. However, the RAF’s Chain Home radar network has detected the Bf-109s, and No. 234 SQN has been vectored to intercept. Leading the Spitfires is Australian ace Pat Hughes, with English ace Bob Doe and Polish ace Zygmunt Klein behind him. Sadly, in reality, only Doe would survive 1940.

The second skirmish has Hurricanes of No. 43 SQN engaging an unusual target. A He-115 of SNFlKdo 2 is heading to the coast to find and rescue a German airman from the channel. However, with its armament of machine-guns and secondary task of reporting Allied shipping movements, the floatplane is fair game for the RAF. Fortunately, two Bf-109s of 1./JG 2 are on hand to ensure the He-115’s safe passage.

The other two missions are for Desert Wings Tobruk owners. Set in June 1942, these missions depict the Battle of Gazala. Rommel’s troops have pushed the Allies back to el Adem, just to the south of Tobruk, and now seem poised to seize the port and encircle Allied positions near Gazala.
In the first mission, 'As Above, So Below', two fierce dogfights break out over the battlefield. Future German ace Franz Stigler, a year and a half before his legendary encounter with a damaged B-17 over Germany, is part of a schwarm of Bf-109s from 4./JG 27 patrolling over Gazala. Unknown to them, they are on a collision course with English ace Billy Drake and the shark-mouthed Kittyhawks of No. 112 SQN. Meanwhile, future Canadian ace Joseph Jean Paul Sabourin of No. 145 SQN leads some of the first Spitfires over Africa against C.202s of 73a Squadriglia.

Thank you to community member Enceladus for providing the inspiration for this mission.

The second mission, Dawn over the Desert, sees the top German and Australian squadrons clash over el Adem as Kittyhawks from No. 3 SQN RAAF battle Hans-Joachim Marseille and 3./JG 27. However, the Axis forces have noticed the appearance of Spitfires over Africa. Ju-88s of 2./LG 1 are closing in on Gambut West airfield, escorted by Italian ace Franco Lucchini’s 84a Squadriglia. Ironically, it is now up to the ageing Tomahawks of No. 4 SQN SAAF to defend the brand new Spitfires.

For the On Line players, TWC's massive campaign goes from strength to strength. TWC's Flug recently posted an update improvements to the campaign. Check out the full information here: https://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/.../showthread.php...

Flug talks about the improved AI. The absolute importance of reconing targets to assist AI bomber squadron accuracy, and your score, as your stats are increased based on the success or otherwise of the subsequent raids on that target/s.

For those that want to lead a whole squadron of bombers into battle, you can on the TWC server!

The Air Combat Group recently began their new Tobruk multiplayer campaign: From Battleaxe to Crusader. Judging from the after-action reports on the ACG website and this video from community member Boyezee, the campaign has seen intense virtual air combat and bombing raids in missions designed for maximum immersion and historical accuracy by the ACG.

Check out Boyezee's latest video from the campaign.

You can find more info on the ACG website: https://www.aircombatgroup.co.uk/acg...fo/23/missions

See you in July for the next update, when we'll talk about the new RAF campaign in development for Cliffs of Dover Blitz!

Regards,

Hello ATAG_Pattle,

thank you for your information about the activities of

'Air Combat Group' (ACG)

and

'The Wrecking Crew' (TWC)

I must admit though that the headline 'TFS Developer Diary June, 2021' confuses me. So just allow me a few questions?

Will Team Fusion Simulation (TFS) also share detailed information about their activities in this thread?

How does TFS understand the term 'developer'?

Will TFS assist player's bomber squadron accuracy and fix the bugged German LotFe7c bombsight functionality.
(All 'Desert Wings' Heinkel HE111 and 'Desert Wings' JU88 herited the bugs.)

:salute:~V~

Very excited to hear this. I know TFS wants VR and TrueSky to be perfect upon release, but is there any chance for an open beta? I would love to help test and bug report performance in VR!

A 30 second video clip of the trueSKY "test version" seems like a small "ask" and would add substance to a DD effort.

4th line.

Firstly, an update on TrueSky and VR. While we don’t have any images to show you (yet!)

What the update text says is entirely clear. What you're saying is not. Is there a way to have a "test version" of trueSKY or VR without images? Is there a way to be running an "alpha" VR implementation without an HMD?

I guess when they have something to show, they'll show it...

I sense that TF will have no problem attracting VR beta testers 😉. I happily volunteer. I run a Rift S.

IKR? I’d happily volunteer too! All for “the good of the community” 🤓

My suspicion is that TFS needs to be granted permission by 1C Company before they show something related to the game's development. We don't know everything and Pattle and Buzzsaw may do not have the power to decide what they show and what they do not show. Furthermore, the TrueSky software owners are Baltic Creative Digital House, based in Liverpool, and they may have decided that no more than one image produced via their software should be shown before IL2CoD is released with TrueSky fully implemented. Great Battles is permanently showing in-development material and Cliffs of Dover is not. There could be reasons for that, reasons we don't know, reasons that simply TFS cannot unveil to the public... and if such is the case... then this is fine. At least, to me it is. Patience, you people, patience: we'll have our implemented TrueSky skies, we'll have our VR in CoD... we'll have all of this... it's only a matter of time.

Thanks Kintaro.  No images as yet as we do not believe progress is at the point to promote. TS and VR in particular are the two areas we want to get spot on for our community.

When both are at the development stage where we are comfortable promoting in progress images, we will be posting those out far and wide :)

Edit: Oh and by the way, a nice maroon, brown or green background might be more exciting for your next DD IMHO. Black is just so, whats the word I am looking for, ....... dark, yes it's so dark and leaves one in a questionable state of mind when finished reading the DD. Savvy mate?

No problem guys 😉

Had noticed that the Spitfire Mk.Vb Trop wasn’t in any mission or campaign, so that’s why I suggested to one of the mission makers to include a mission with the Spit Trop.

Glad to see that the RCAF in North Africa is depicted😎

For my simulators I have a computer on which I can only play in VR, so I am very excited by this news. At last I can buy Desert Wings/CoD!

So for best "promoting in progress images" I'm guessing a 30 second 2D trueSKY clip would need 4k resolution @30fps or better and without artifacts or buildings suddenly "popping" into view.

I know that exact dates are not (cannot be) given, but is this VR-update a matter of days, weeks or months? I read of VR for this simulator some time ago. When should/can I buy the new version?

In fairness, I think the hope is that a VR implementation will be released before end of the 2021. What is worrying is the lack of trueSKY video demos in 2D. That's a critical benchmark for progress on a VR implementation. A trueSKY debut on or about August 6 2021 would be a very promising event.

It does surprise me they haven't officially released any images or video of Truesky in action (apart from the one single image when they finally confirmed they were going to use it) . Genuinely I don't understand it as they have obviously tested it over many months and to not even capture a few clips even in Alpha and share them is just bizarre.

Why TFS do not want publicity and people talking about their game makes no sense when the whole point of making/improving a game is to sell it and a way of doing that is to show work in progress so the community start getting excited about the product again?

Look at it this way: it is not easy to sell "old" tech. If I have a VR headset I don't want to invest my time and money into an obsolete head tracking system just to play one 2D flight sim comfortably. The same rationale applies if I plan to buy a VR headset in the foreseeable future. Thus talk of a VR future has become mandatory. At some later point a "proof of life" will become inescapable so I would guess that if there are no trueSKY videos to show by end of September 2021 that will raise doubts.

I do have a VR headset and for me even a single msimulator is worth it. I play Il-2 and DCS and very rarely FS2020, but even one of these sims is worth it. I have some practical flying experience and there is nothing like VR to imagine yourself in a cockpit. Do not forget that ,most 'real' pilots only fly a very few types as well. As far as I can remember I only flew 2 gliders and 3 microlight types solo, all those years ago.

years ago here too thru successful VFR check ride, too old and poor now so VR is the next best thing  🙂

This is not complicated. Time is money. 4k artifact-free video clips of trueSKY and Blitz "Re-Launch" by end of 2021 will benefit TFS.

I sure am glad the 3% of simulation players which are VR owners are so vocal and know what is best for TFS, otherwise it might get real quiet around here and TFS might just close up shop and fade away. Oh wait, that quietness might be nice and TFS will still deliver TrueSky and maybe VR also, WHEN THEY ARE READY. PPPPFFFF!

I'll add that when BoK was announced, along with VR and such, Jason says here that he wasn't certain exactly when VR would be added, and it could have been that people would be flying over Kuban before VR was released. However, VR was released in April 2017, with the Kuban map released in late August 2017, so the former of which was released 8 months after they began work on the project... but that was done when there was no global pandemic.

Both teams have been affected by COVID and are facing many challenges, so I feel that it's best to accept what we get when we get it.

Who among us has not been affected by the pandemic? Has anyone stopped selling sims during the pandemic? If so that's news to me. Discussion of VR easy to avoid if it's upsetting  ;-)

It is because it is completely redundant - the issue has already been answered by the developers. If that answer doesn't sit well with you, so be it -- that's life. Yet it is brokered by yourself again and again and again ad nauseam. You are not owed anything - and it is just the sense of entitlement that gets rather tiresome on top of it all.

...and it is grating on many of the members, so that is likely why you are getting the responses you are receiving.
