May 1940 Co-op Campaign. Battle of Belgium/Fall of France.

I just want to gauge interest to see if it is worth making this available to the general community. I have been making a running a co-op campaign based to the Axis western offensive during May 1940, due to Map and aircraft type constraints it is a fictional campaign with an RAF hurricane squadron based in Belgium during May 1940 but it is based around real events. It would require me to make some tweaks and fix some mistakes plus get the skins looking right so it is a bit of work for me but if enough people are interested I will do it. So far we are two days in with 6 missions built, I would make the rest available as I made them, which is about 1 per week at the moment. I could possibly turn it into a single player campaign as well, again depending on interest. I am certainly not claiming to be an expert at this as I am newish to the mission editor and learning as I go but it has been fun so far. I have built the maps from scratch including as accurate as possible front lines and unit positions. Below is a couple of examples of the map/briefings. There is also a link to the trailer I made to hype the guys up that I am flying it with.

Thanks guys, seems like there is some interest. I will make the the co-op campaign available first and then will attempt a single player version later.

Wildcat,

Just a quick question.  Can a coop be flown by a single player?

From my experience yes. The mission is loaded through the coop lobby but the unused slots are filled with AI. I think it would even be possible to fly it as a wingman.

Yes and no, so as mtbiker1998 said you can create a co-op server jump in and fly it yourself but at the moment there would be no AI wingmen. It would just be you vs the enemy which would not end well, these missions are made for at least 5 players. When I get around to converting them to single player missions if will probably be the player plus 5 AI, so two flights of three.

Curious: You are actively deleting the wingmen then if there are no players for them? how?

I usually have 9 aircraft set up for the players to choose from, set into three flights. I have a template set up so if the aircraft doesn't move from a specific zone within 5 minutes then it automatically deletes to save on resources. I would love to claim I made the template but I didn't, one of the other mission makers I fly with sent it to me.

Thanks! Yes, I used something similar back in the RoF days. It doesn't prevent the AI 'spike' at the beginning of a mission but it's better than nothing. Another idea could be to make this optional: Only if a player fires a flare from the airfield will the timer start ticking.....

Just gonna put in my 2 cents and say that I'd much rather have the AI wingmen than not have them, especially since I plan to fly with with 1, maybe 2 other people.

I like the idea of shooting a flare to make it optional

This is still in the pipeline, it is just taking longer than I expected as I have gotten extremely busy with real life stuff and I have also lost my office to a renovation and with it access to my PC and all the missions. I do intend to finish it and release it when I can.

I love scripted campaigns in single player, but when I play with friends I tend to use Easy Mission Generator or PWCG. I would be specially interested in coop campaigns and I love this scenario.

I have finally got access to my main PC and a bit of spare time to put some missions out. I have had to go back and make some major changes to the first mission and I will have to do it for the next 4 or 5 as well as I learnt more as I went along and the first couple were not well optimized and had a fair bit of stuttering. So with that in mind I will add the first mission in the series here and to the original post. Normally I would get someone to fly it with me on co-op and test it but I am to busy with work this week so If you could please post your feed back and let me know if it runs ok and if everything goes as you think it should. There may be some mistakes in it so please let me know.

I will also post a zip with the skins needed for the first mission, I will eventually put them on HSD but I haven't looked into it just yet.

I'm very interested as Single Player or COOP campaign.
A big thank you... hope when we get the new Normandy map... we can have early war campaigns!

Cheers, GenMarkof ;)

I ran a test of the first mission and realised some of the effects were missing so I have just updated it. If you downloaded it before now re download it and replace the mission files, they are still labeled the same but the zip has been renamed with the version number.

Thanks Mark and Tigre, I have fixed the issues you guys found and updated the mission file. First mission is now version 3.7, anyone who is yet to fly it please download the updated mission before flying it.

I was hoping to get the second mission out today but it may have to wait until later in the week as sickness has gotten in the way.

Hi @Wanganui_Wildcat,

Thanks for the first mission so far. I set it up last night for a group of 8 I fly with to try out and it was well received.

Only point to note for you that might need a small tweak:

Spoiler

There were 3 Junkers 88's which flew over the home field and caused some destruction.

We had a couple of pilots sorting VR stuff so not on the flight plan immediately after take-off, who then spotted those 3 visual contacts and gave chase.

One was going guns on, just over the town west of the home airfield when the 3 aircraft just de-spawned.

Might be a trigger thing, and potentially they are not meant to be attacked, however it did leave a little bit of confusion of "was something broken there" etc.

Apart from that the rest of the mission ran well. Good performance and interesting interception.

We all ran with just .303's so it made the gunnery very tricky, ensuring well placed shots were needed!

Thanks for your efforts and I will definitely look out for more of your missions in this campaign if you continue them ?

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the mission. What you experienced was meant to happen but you were not supposed to be there when it did. I made it happen that way just incase someone was there plus it was an easy mechanic to use for the desired outcome, however I didn't want it to be a drain on resources and slow the server so that is why you saw what you saw. Thanks for the heads up, I may make a small tweak to it when I get the chance and put them on a different trigger so it doesn't happen the way you experienced it.

Mission two has been added to the main post and this post, once again I have not had the time or the extra people to properly test it so please let me know if you find any issue. Cheers.

Thanks mate, appreciated.

We were in the area for a while forming up and waiting for one to sort their VR stuff out. Wouldn't normally be there to see it, but might be safer for them to trigger in when we are further in the Flight plan, i.e nearer the border turn.

Will try to get my group together in the next week or two to give your 2nd mission a run.

Looking forward to it and will let you know thoughts.

Cheers again :)

Wildcat,

Loved the mission thus far; however, I noticed that the Ju-88’s had their rear gunners standing up.  You might want to look into this as it has happened before.  I believe it was with the desert mod developed by Off Winters.  On another issue how does one go about adding AI to the mission as I fly by myself.  The first mission was not difficult as the number of enemy planes was not overwhelming, but future missions could be a problem.
Thanks for your work thus far.

Tested mission 2 (v 3.2) just now flying alone. Worked ok. Just a little detail. The base of the clouds is at 7500 feet and the brieffing says 4000.

Hi,

Looking forward to fly the second mission with my teammates Tigre91 and Mark. I have created several historical skins for the Hurricane, available in HSD to enjoy the next missions.

Great campaign, thanks for the effort.
