The Bf-110 is deadly in the right hands even as a fighter

Only thing I could love better would be a Grumman Skyrocket.  The video was wonderful.  I wish I could dogfight, but I just can't see well enough.  Watching your dogfights was a thrill.

Only flew it once but it was fun. A good low-level strike aircraft against targets like depots, airfields etc.

Didn't the LW have some successes with during the BofB when attacking coastal airfields or installations and then dashing back across the channel at wave top heights?

Not sure but that would be interesting. I thought the Bf-110 was pretty much deemed a failure in the BoB but I am really rusty on my WWII history.

As an escort fighter/destroyer it failed miserably against Hurricanes and Spitfires.

It was only a failure as an escort fighter. Well, I say ‘only’, but that was its main mission in the BoB.

It was more successful at booming and zooming RAF fighters, but as @Reggie_Mental says, it was very successful at low-level strikes against airfields and radar stations. The BoB was the first time that the Germans experimented with fighter-bombers, and Erprobungsgruppe 210 rapidly validated the concept.

I’m doing research into early August 1940 for Cliffs of Dover right now, and ErpGr 210 comes up a lot. It seems that they were conducting multiple successful strikes in a single day. On the 12th, they managed to temporarily knock out radar stations in the Dover-Canterbury area and inflict severe damage on RAF Manston.

It’s a stark contrast to performance of I./ZG 76’s Bf-110 D-1/R1s three days later, which completely failed to protect Luftwaffe raids on Scotland and northern England. Some of the aircraft simply exploded when their poorly-designed belly tanks were hit.

This is what the Bf-110 D-1/R1 looked like, by the way:

Called "Dackelbauch" by the pilots, some wood and canvas fairing over the long range tank.. considering the idea of drop tanks was allready out there, it is kind of a silly idea, especially when belly-landings are on the menue
