kissTheSky Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 I hardly ever venture out of the hardware and VR section, so mods please move it as you see fit. I live fairly close to this museum and don’t visit as much as I should. This past weekend I was there and snapped a couple photos. Ar 234 and the He 219 are the only surviving samples in existence. Right across from them are some examples of Japanese fighters as well. 9 1 1
I./JG52_Woutwocampe Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 (edited) Wow... ...that P-38 looks rough. (Nice pics by the way) Edit : Do I see a Pfeil on the last picture?! Edited May 27, 2021 by I./JG52_Woutwocampe 1
Field-Ops Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Very nice surviving examples of fine rare warbirds. Hope they can finish out the nose and clean the others up a bit 1

Motherbrain Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Hey they made progress on the Owl! It was still on a jig last time I went.

It’s older sibling Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington DC is no slouch either, but Udvar-Hazy center simply has it all. I’ll add some of the sole surviving Japanese WWII aircraft tomorrow as well. Everytime we go there I tell my wife and kids that they should make alternative plans to get back home in case I decide to jump the ropes and climb into the cockpits of some of those priceless pieces in there. 3

I went to the Washington DC one a long while ago. I think it was in 1993. And lol@the last part of your post :). Please feel free to add 1000 more of your pics to the topic! 1

Bachem natter, Go229, etc etc. I just went to read about this museum and I'm still shocked. I haven't been in a while. I went just after the Discovery was delivered. I had never seen one of the actual space-faring shuttles before this. NASA offered to clean up the shuttle after its last landing, and the museum curator didn't let them. So it has all the burn marks from re-entering the atmosphere for the last time ever. I know this is a WW2 forum, but... I can't explain the feeling that I got standing underneath that insane piece of machinery that had carried humans to space and back dozens of times. It sounds weird talking this way about a museum piece, but I'll never forget it. And yes, there are plenty of exhibits of WW1 and WW2 craft on display as well. Here's a panoramic photo I took from an earlier visit in 2009 when I was hired as a photographer for a gala that was held there. (in the rear center of the photo is the Enterprise shuttle, which was the test shuttle they built before any went into space, which was replaced with the Discovery when it retired) Edited May 27, 2021 by unlikely_spider 3
twilson37 Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Yes Udvar-Hazy I live not too far away myself, I actually worked on one of the actual aircraft in the museum the Bell XV-15 we were using it as a prototype for the 609. 2
I./JG52_Woutwocampe Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 (edited) @unlikely_spider Awesome symetrical panoramic picture you got there. Shows how huge this place is, plus that SR-71 perfectly in the middle. God I love plane porn. Edited May 27, 2021 by I./JG52_Woutwocampe 1

I studied how to take multiple exposures and stitch them together using dedicated software before software algorithms on many fronts made my skillsets obsolete. But yes, it's an expansive and impressive space. I hope to visit again soon, as things are looking better lately on the virus front (in this country at least) 2
40plus Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 I visited there a couple years ago. Out of no planning what so ever it was super bowl Sunday so the museum was quite empty. It was glorious to have the time and space to enjoy each exhibit unencumbered by crowds. 1
CUJO_1970 Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Nice to see they have the wings on He-219 - it and the Do-335 are awe-inspiring aircraft and they are massive. I was blown away last time I was there - got to see the Go-229 in the repair shop! They have a great engine collection as well.

Even though some sections are cordoned off, limited crowd more than makes up for it.
40plus Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Not the best quality but here are some of my Pictures from 2018 5
I./JG52_Woutwocampe Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 I'd spend countless hours there every single month.

I’m out of reactions for today now you understand me don’t you. ?. OK I’ll confess, FW190 must have been moved a little since my last visit, it was so close that I checked no one was close by so I touched and moved my hand across the right wing tip! There. I feel much better! Aichi M6 You can also see the Orange Blossom, Japan’s first operational jet fighter between the pylons of the Aichi above. Enola Gay Edited May 27, 2021 by kissTheSky 1
kissTheSky Posted May 27, 2021 Author Posted May 27, 2021 And then there was this in the restoration hangar ? 2

I wonder if it's in flyable condition, being that it's in "restoration". Though I think it's hard to find knowledgeable mechanics for this craft, being that the battles in which they were used occurred a long time ago. 1
