I can't be 100% that it never happened, but mixed units of Typhoons and Tempests would be vanishingly rare and unusual. Usually a unit would be pulled out of combat to retrain on the new machines (usually for at least a couple of months, more often 3, sometimes longer).

From what I can tell, this was the case, and mixed aircraft Commonwealth squadrons were rare at best, but probably nonexistent on the Western Front.

Merlin-engined Spitfires were kept in seperate units from Griffon-engined ones, so I would assume that Tempests and Typhoons were similarly divided. I imagine that logistics were streamlined as a result.

Things seem to have been done differently in the south, though. No. 3 SQN RAAF fought under RAF command in Africa and Italy. In 1940 they had a mix of Gladiators, Gauntlets, and Lysanders. At one point they flew Hurricanes, possibly alongside all the others, before being taken off operations for a few months to convert to the Tomahawk. They then converted from Tomahawks to Kittyhawks in December 1941, during which time they stayed on the front lines and continued flying operational sorties. The same happened when they converted to Mustangs in 1944 - they were a mixed Mustang and Kittyhawk unit for three days.

Those pesky Canadian Troops - they had to be told in the Battle of France to retreat as they were punching a path through the Germans to Paris whilst the French and Brits were headed the other way - or so I'm told.

That Tiffy - gorgeous shots and I also like the updated Ju88 - will be great to see her skinned and flying along the West European Coast.

Yes I thought this too, although its still a WIP so perhaps the sound will be touched up upon release, but great to have it in game nevertheless.

When the GAZ was released and I took it for a test drive in QMB, I was really impressed with the bomb sounds. I wonder if these were improved recently? Or perhaps I just hadn't experienced the sounds in such close proximity to the blast at ground level before...anyway I was impressed.

In saying that, I do hope the sim sees some more improvements re: sound effects (mostly engine and gun sounds).

A very good short article with some useful data for anyone interested in the use of tactical air by 2TAF here: very much Typhoon relevant.

I've never read of mixed Typhoon & Tempest Squadrons, but ironically they had more in common than the Merlin & Griffin engined Spitfires, at least engine wise. Both having the unique Napier Sabre H pattern engine.

That could also be said of some Merlin engined Spitfires too, MK.IX's having the Rolls Royce Merlin while MK.XVI's had the Packard Merlin, licence built in the US, but with a modified design, the differences being great enough to warrant allocation of a different mark.

Off the top of the head I don't recall the exact differences between the British and US license built Merlin's, but you would have needed a different set of tools to work on them for a start, which is a pretty big logistical fail.

Thats a great DD!

These really makes Fridays' as the best day of the week.

Tiffie has been my favorite plane. Somehow it like its looks more than Tempest. => Q3 I will fly in the red side.

With my bird brain I cannot break the code so I need to wait yo next week for the announcement.  But itself the fact that there is some new content coming to my favorite game makes me very very happy . Thanks team. My credit card is ready.

Units would change over completely before flying the new type operationally.

Great DD!

I am very excited about the Typhoon, I love the small details such as the different sight adjustment from the Tempest.

Coastal batteries and new ships will definitely bring a lot of interesting spots and missions into the new BON map, I really look forward to its release.

I have been reading up on ORBs for 198 and 609 Squadrons (together forming 123 wing) to create a historical campaign for the Typhoon.

They operated a lot over the Netherlands long before the invasion. In a perfect world we would have a map that had the south of England and the Netherlands connected but with Rheinland and Normandy we can make it work.

I am surprised at how well the Tiffie did as a fighter against Fw190s in 1943, often getting jumped by enemies and walking away with a couple of kills and no losses.

------------

In other important news - next week, we plan to make an announcement about some additional content we plan to add to the Great Battles series, we hope you will be happy. Stay tuned!

It looks like the code Jason posted is not for the next BOX expansion, it's a"additional content". The wording to me means a new feature that we dont have, not more of the same . Some guesses:

  • Controllable boats
  • Controllable AAA
  • Some form of Infantry for TC (already announced).
  • Air Marshal (already announced)
  • Drop tanks/ fuel management  (already announced)

Well... the truth is that we haven't had official announcement of infantry emplacements... and we have had official announcement of the possibility of a fuel management system (I think) but not an announcement of it coming or what it'll feature.

Controllable boats are something interesting to me (Motor torpedo boats, river boats etc.) however they'd want to upgrade the buoyancy models (etc.) and it'd make sense to do that after FC4 (when float planes from Rise of Flight might be introduced, and maybe even something like an Ar-196 might be possible)... so if it does happen I'd guess 2024-2025... and even then it is probably a bit unlikely.

So... while it is fun to hope - it is best to temper one's expectations.

That said a Collector's Plane for FC or maybe even TC2 is possible... as is any number of strange things (e.g. the decal system was a surprise). My bet might be the AQMB (Advanced Quick Mission Builder) which was mentioned by Jason in an e-mail with indications that it might be a system which re-uses the original dynamic campaign code (from BoS) to generate more diverse quick missions... which would be exceptionally cool... (especially if we could add our own custom ground target configurations someday... it'd be great to have mission packs which allowed us to switch up the aircraft while having more complicated ground targets etc. ...but now I'm letting my hopes run wild)

Yes but suddenly, camouflage is not effective in multiplayer since the opponent may not have downloaded this skin.

Ok cool. At least I am fixed, it only remains to wait.

I don't speak English, I use google translate. Given the reaction of some, my words were apparently not polite. It was clearly not my intention.

There is no point in creating mystery for something that has already been mentioned, so I'm going to strongly disagree with that.

Can't wait for the Ju 88C-6. Although it is the heavy fighter variant, can't wait to use it as a night fighter.

By the looks of the gondola, we are getting the additional 2 x 20mm MG/FF cannons modification, bringing the total to 3 x 7.92mm machine guns and 3 x 20mm cannons, what a punch.

Ju88 always looked rather graceful to me, this new version particularly so, superb model.

Take care and be safe.

That said, No. 80 Sqd. (Tempest) and No. 274  Sqd.(Tempest) were based at Deurne (B-70) at the same time as No. 193 Sqd. (Typhoon) so it would not be absurd to have Tempests flying cover for Typhoons from a mission perspective.

From a pilots perspective - No. I don't think there would a choice to fly one or the other (...as the norm).

The upcoming announcement must somehow be related to a hidden map of Karelia. ? It can already be found in mission builder...for a reason
