Can't join co-op crew unless dead?

Trying to play TC as multicrew... it appears I can't join my friend's crew unless I spawn in the server with a tank, and am either killed or abandon the tank?

 

If I spawn in as observer I just get this when clicking on "Become a gunner"

I can't join his crew at the server lobby. Gun positions are enabled.. like I said, no issues joining his crew if I'm knocked out or abandon my tank.

Try click on a base/spawnpoint once, of the correct side/army.

Do not select a tank though. Click somewhere outside that window.

Then try 'become a gunner'.

Looks like you need to somehow choose a side first, I dunno...

@DD_FT- might be right, but I just tried a multi-crew server, got the same screen image when clicking the "become a gunner" button. All the tanks on this server had their tanks locked. So just check that the tank you want to join is not locked. You can see when a tank is locked from the spawn-in screen.

This probably didn't come across correctly. The intent was to multi-crew, but when I joined the server, everyone had their tanks locked. Anyway, thanks DD_FT-

Thanks for the replies, but like I said in the OP, tanks are unlocked and I can join someone else's crew without issue if my tank is destroyed or abandoned.

Not the server lobby, after connecting to the server, you see the map with all the available spawn points for both blue and red. Click one of those ... just like you normally do when you pick a tank. But do not select a tank in that popup, just click outside of it...

This is a co-op mission, you don't get a map with spawn points.

Aha, If it's a Coop, then just do not take any tank from the briefing / line up  ... leave it well alone.

So your name stays to the right of the screen.

 

Let the others do their bit of selecting tanks and loadouts and skins and hitting Ready.

 

After the mission starts, hit Esc, select Become a Gunner ...

Like I said, I don't get any options when I click 'Become Gunner', the screen is as I posted in the OP.
