SR603-Flowbee Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 (edited) Walter Nowotny (7 December 1920 – 8 November 1944) was an Austrian-born fighter ace of the Luftwaffe in World War II. He is credited with 258 aerial victories—that is, 258 aerial combat encounters resulting in the destruction of the enemy aircraft—in 442 combat missions. Nowotny achieved 255 of these victories on the Eastern Front and three while flying one of the first jet fighters, the Messerschmitt Me 262, in the Defense of the Reich. He scored most of his victories in the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, and approximately 50 in the Messerschmitt Bf109. Nowotny scored an "ace in a day" on multiple occasions, shooting down at least five airplanes on the same day, including two occurrences of "double-ace in a day" (scored at least ten kills) in the summer of 1943. 8 November 1944, news reached the command post of a large bomber formation approaching. Two Rotten of Me 262 were prepared for take-off, Erich Büttner and Franz Schall at Hesepe, and Nowotny and Günther Wegmann at Achmer. At first only Schall and Wegmann managed to take off because Büttner had a punctured tire during taxiing and Nowotny's turbines initially refused to start. With some delay, Nowotny took off and engaged the enemy on his own, Schall and Wegmann having since retired from the action after sustaining battle damage. Nowotny radioed that he had downed a B-24 Liberator and a P-51 Mustang before he reported one engine failing and made one final garbled transmission containing the word "burning". Helmut Lennartz recalled: "I remember Nowotny's crash very well. Feldwebel Gossler, a radio operator with our unit, had set up a radio on the airfield. Over this set I and many others listened to the radio communications with Nowotny's aircraft. His last words were, "I'm on fire" or "it's on fire". The words were slightly garbled. There are minor cosmetic differences between the A3 and A4 mainly the engine cooling vents and the radio mast on tail plane. I will do an A5 version in due course based on another profile by Claes Sundin which is closer to the only photo I have found so far. This one was based on a model kit by Eduard. https://mega.nz/file/Yo8B1YTC#DPrnKlj4pqLNMiyTWZCmzP2FzQwW7jC-F1-ij_q4GiE Edited April 7, 2021 by SR603-Flowbee 12 2 2

Cybermat47 Posted April 7, 2021 Posted April 7, 2021 Great work, looks great! Just did a bit of research on Nowotny because I’m pretty unfamiliar with him. He’s the second individual Luftwaffe pilot I’ve found who was actually a member of the Nazi party. The first I found was Reinhard Heydrich, a high-ranking SS leader and organiser of the Holocaust who flew Bf-109s in combat for the Luftwaffe in his spare time. Also worth mentioning is Hans-Ulrich Rudel, who was a fanatical Nazi who sheltered war criminals post-war, but was only ever a member of a neo-Nazi party. Apologies for rambling, examining the ideology of members of the Wehrmacht is just something I’m interested in 1
timothy55 Posted April 7, 2021 Posted April 7, 2021 Excellent! Big thanks Flowbee. I splashed the cash this week and couple of days ago my Logitech pedals arrived. Tuned last night and working fine, funny thing is taxing is now a slightly different experience, but in a good way. Will now give this skin a run out with full pedal prejudice. As I said its not a skin that to my knowledge has been done on Great Battles and therefore maybe a must have for the community. Once again thanks Flowbee and happy skinning. 1

Any other "researched" and " historical" comment ? ?

Any other "researched" and " historical" comment ? If you want, sure! Unlike other famous Luftwaffe aces such as Adolf Galland and Hans-Joachim Marseille, Nowotny’s military career started after the beginning of WWII, in October 1939. As part of his training, he was posted to Jagdfliegerschule 5, which Marseille had attended previously. While there, he befriended Paul Galland, the younger brother of Adolf Galland. One of his instructors there was Julius Arigi, Austria-Hungary’s second most successful WWI fighter ace. It was not until July 1941 that Nowotny scored his first two victories in the same fight, shooting down two I-153s over Estonia. Despite being most commonly associated with Germany’s more advanced fighters, the Fw-190 and Me-262, Nowotny’s first success was actually in a Bf-109 E-7. He nearly didn’t survive his first successes, however, as he was shot down by another I-153 flown by Soviet ace Aleksandr Avdeyev, who would be killed just over a year later. Nowotny spent 3 days on a dinghy in the Baltic, reportedly almost being rammed by a Soviet destroyer, before he came ashore and could return to his unit. 2
SR603-Flowbee Posted April 7, 2021 Author Posted April 7, 2021 (edited) I based the FW190 A-5 skin on these two profiles. Since taking the screenshots I have fixed the strengthening plate on the tail fin to what you see in the hangar shot. I couldn't find the photo that I saw just yesterday that I think was the basis for the profiles. If and when I come across it again I will add it. On looking at the shots next to each other I can also see that the heart should be a bit bigger and the emblem a bit smaller.. another update beckons... Tweaked and updated as in hangar photo.. https://mega.nz/file/491UzLQQ#UK8pSpFqXlidQrNkMoXawbX7alJiORal6gIoXUWwRa8 Another very minor tweak.. I'm spamming my own thread now. https://mega.nz/file/g09yFAwZ#z0bqxwFdmmdu2FxTpGzuydljRFmp2EK5SVBU3mh1P_E Edited April 8, 2021 by SR603-Flowbee 4 3
