Sorry if this has been asked before, I did look through the FAQ but couldn't see anything related to HUD. I've only recently launched CoD after a year of IL2.
I am a terrible pilot and never will rise to the lofty heights of most of you guys (no pun intended) but I love it. My problem is that I need a virtual cockpit/HUD type affair on screen so that I don't need to look down at my dials, I usually takeoff/fly/land in chase mode and only go to cockpit view for combat but even in cockpit view I'd like my speed/altitude and heading as a HUD. Is there a HUD option? If so how do I turn it on?

Many thanks, Phil.

Your out of luck I'm afraid. While it won't help you in external view, you can see your speed, heading, altitude, and every other dail reading by moving the mouse cursor over the instruments.

It's be nice if a HUD was included, maybe in tf6.0?

Thank you, is there a HUD option in Tobruk? Ta.

Nope afraid not, think of Tobruk as more of a map and asset pack. Any changes to the game itself trickles down to blitz, unfortunately a HUD hasn't been added as of yet.

Hi Pippa. CoD is IL-2 too, more exactly it is the second IL-2 game. By IL2 you certainly refer to the Great Battles series, which is the third (and last to date) IL-2. This is why I  usuallt shorten their names by IL2CoD ("IL-2 Cliffs of Dover") and IL2GB ("IL-2 Great Battles").

In the Dover series (Cliffs of Dover Blitz + Desert Wings Tobruk) the HUD informations are fully customisable windows (and I love this), but in this instance you are seeking a very specific type of HUD: it is called the speed bar. The 1st and 3rd IL-2 games do present the availability of a speed bar. But, as Thundercracker already said, not the 2nd, not IL2CoD.

You see? you say "my problem"... but there's no problem, trust me. Simply go the realism options and disable all external views. Then start training yourself in solo missions with inner cockpit views only... and very, very, very, very shortly you'll be feeling the joys of flying in a superb simulator with full-realism options. After that you'll be a new pilot, not asking for speed bars any more. If you want we can meet together in a free TS server for the comms (ATAG's TS for example) and fly together in a lobby I'll prepare for the occasion. We'll be flying your favorite aircarft, no problem with that.

Thank you for the offer, I'll perservere with it for as long as it takes. I'm a veteran of the original (pre'46) IL2 with the far east expansion, aces expansion etc. Microsoft combat flight sim 1, 2 and eventually 3 as well. The problem was it was too easy to 'play' with no cockpit, gun sight only or with HUD. I am a player not a 'simulator'. I have little interest in complex engine management but I want/like something better than an arcade game. I only got involved with the GB series late last year so I'm still 'finding my feet' with it but getting better each time I fly.
I have noticed that I'm better in a 109F4 than a 109G2 so I think I'm getting better. I really enjoyed starting the original IL2 with the Winter War, starting in a Fiat G50 open cockpit or a Gloster Gladiator was fun. Options included the IAR80 mk3. Armament I think was a pair of 7.92mg. Better off spitting at the opponent!
The CoD trainer reckoned I was the worst student he'd ever had and that if I couldn't follow orders I had no place in the RAF. I guess I'll have to stick with the Luftwaffe.....
Thanks again.

So you are an experienced virtual pilot. Be welcome, chap.

Forget the CoD trainer, maybe someday it will be fixed, but it's still broken at this stage. If you really want to break your arcade-style habits there's no better way than the hard way: bye bye external views! Set your realism options this way below, then, go to a solo mission, chose one aircraft and follow the corresponding flaschard instructions (there's one mission I created for my own training and aircraft tests, I can share it with you if you want). If you want to go further in mastering the piloting of a specific type of aircraft, there are the Chuck's guides for that... see? we live in a perfect world... do you really want more than that? ?

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but Control F1 is wonder woman view that has the gauges available with no cockpit and works with external view also.

My settings look mostly like that but with the complex engine management off and external views on. I'll compromise for a start, chase view only for take off and landing. That is for the most part how I fly in the GB series anyway. When I go back to GB I'll turn off the HUD. Then I'll buy Tobruk, I really wanted to fly the North Africa campaign. I'd love to see the Balkans & Crete/Malta eventually. Thank you again.

Since no overlay option in game - besides "Engine Controls" (sliders or digital), alternatives.

1 - Press Ctrl +F1 (or Shift+F1..) until you see no cockpit (Wonder Woman view) but only the main flight instruments.

2 - Use Virtual Cockpit showing 2D instruments in second monitor. Example for Spitfire:
