Historical Aces still Scoring from the Grave

Hi @PatrickAWlson - I have been working hard to try to top the overall leaderboard, and had a suspicion that the Goebbels had been working a little overtime.  So I decided to track it over the past couple of days.  Sure enough, the Minister of Propaganda has been padding the kill count of the deceased Hermann Graf over these past few weeks after I personally shot him down*.  Screenshots below (it looks like his historical numbers are still tracking with the RL kills you have coded into his file?)

 

*Now, I will admit that there may be some karma at play here because it did take him out while in was in his chute.  Before anyone judges too harshly, it was Pat himself who has advised us that the historical aces don't die or get captured easily, and Graf had already made a miraculous escape from deep in our lines when I shot him down on a previous occasion in this same campaign.  He was once again deep in our lines on this final occasion, and I knew by all rights he should be captured.  Plus, I swear Pat was in my ear whispering "you have to kill them REALLY dead" as I was watching his chute descend…but, I digress - here is the proof of Goebbels' work trying to keep a future Hero of the Soviet Union down:

Did you get a newspaper report that he was dead?  If not PWCG didn't recognize it.  My code might consider parachuting as surviving and not actually check to see if the bot n the parachute was shot.  Next time you have him in your sights keep shooting until he blows up

The short answer is no, but I don't think I can remember ever seeing a newspaper report in PWCG.  Am I missing a setting to get those periodically or with events?

Just as an FYI - both my squadron log, and his, reflect his death - plus he is no longer carried on the rolls of I./JG52.  I am attaching an error report in case that helps you see his file and screenshots below.  (This is not a big deal to me, I just wanted to make you aware Graf is hiding behind your RIP tombstone - I am having a great experience in PWCG as always).

Yes...next time you will be shouting that in my ear if I see the bastage again!  However, sadly, it won't be Roman Breznev chasing him any time soon.  I think the karma for the "chute-shoot" continued, because shortly after my posting last night Maj Breznev with his 51 victories was seriously wounded while bailing out of his crippled Hurricane.  He was under attack from 4 109s that had him cornered no matter how hard he turned that Hurricane.   Yep...Karma is a bitch 

 

The good news is that thanks to you your recent updates I can decide whether I feel that bringing him back from the disabled list in a year or so violates my own Ironman rule.  My thinking right now is that following the example of Rudel, Bader, Berthold and even Richthofen, it will probably fit my playstyle to bring him back in the summer of 1943.  So thanks for that new option!

Something to be aware of: dead aces are listed in the top scorers list until they are bumped off.

Thanks Pat & just confirming for you that it is definitely continuing in my campaign with "Ghost" Graf scoring more from the grave today - now up to 107 from the 83-95 in the OP.  I think this guy is determined to get his 212 IRL victories.

 

It will be interesting to see if other dead historical aces show up, or if it is Graf specific.  I knocked down Barkhorn before he appeared on the leader board, so I will let you know if his ghost shows up later.  Thanks again for all your work!

Thanks Pat - attached.  There is also an earlier one in the 3rd post above if you want to compare.  It will be interesting to see if you think it is related to the "chute kill" confusing the code.

@PatrickAWlson - updated file attached for comparison to the 2 others above if that helps you, he is now up to 139.

 

I am going to backup the campaign and try a workaround to see what will happen if I edit his file by deleting all the victories after his KIA date.  I realize if that works, that I will have to copy that file after any updates since he isn't just in the user folder.  Let me know if this is a bad idea 

 

UPDATE: That seems to have worked.  I deleted the Graf kills after 7 July 42 in both the main and user/campaign aces folder and he is back where he should be at 75.  I will let you know if I have an ill effects in the campaign going forward.
