This would be cool:

( Actually its a board game, and totally outside the boundaries of Flying Circus , but a fun concept. I remember many many years ago as a kid reading a comic book story with a very similar concept. When all modern airplanes had been destroyed by the invading aliens, old WW-1 airplanes were rolled out of museums and used with success against alien engines space ships. The reason they succeeded when F-86’s had failed? Because the WW-1 aircraft were largely wood & canvas they had a virtually zero radar signature.Fantastic? Unbelievable? Well all I can say is that it made plenty of sense to an 11 year old kid & implanted it into his memory...perhaps the developers of this game also had a similar inspiration?

Sure, why not? They'll take fewer bullets than the D.VII and Pflaz to bring down.

I love the concept but....

"This game is nerfed!  Those Tripods have too many Joules even for a Martian Death Ray.  Historically at that time they barely had the ability to cut diamonds with them, let alone vaporize an entire airbase!!!"

But I still love the concept!

@BeebopThere’s an authorised sequel to The War of the Worlds called The Massacre of Mankind, with some rather memorable sequences of Martian tripods fighting WWI-era aircraft.

It’s also a really interesting look at how WWI would have played out if Martians had briefly invaded Britain in 1907.

Spoiler

Germany wins the naval race because Britain focuses more on the army and home defence, so the two nations are on very good terms when Franz Ferdinand gets shot. Without British troops to support them, the French are defeated, only for the Eastern Front to drag on into 1920. The Germans also have the advantage of Martian technology that they’ve acquired thanks to their good relations with Britain, who are scavenging the equipment left by the first Martian invasion.

This game was actually really good - it would be nice to see a remake (true to the original in terms of balance and rogue-like qualities etc.)

Play it a lot since it was Wings of war from Nexus. Great game, even the kids love it.

Sails of Glory is worth a look too.

Cool. I always love some alternate history and wacky stuff. I mean, all historical has its charme, but so does have thought out fantasies on technology, be it trains, aliens, tripods or airships..  one of my favourite games as kid was "Air Power" a game  that drew on Airships carrying early aviation style aircraft, which I kinda feel would also go well with such a scenario
