Pantsy Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 Good morning! I recently purchased Battle of Kuban and have fallen in love with the BF110. However, as I have been playing in career mode, our squadron appears to be exclusively flying ground attack interception missions. Is this normal? I was hoping to have a variety of air patrol/interception and ground attack missions. The last 5-6 days in game have had 1-2 interception missions over the same town near the front lines. This is using the only 110G2 squadron available at the earliest campaign start. Will there be more variety later in the campaign? Thanks in advance.
1CGS LukeFF Posted March 7, 2021 1CGS Posted March 7, 2021 Yes, that's normal for that unit. In reality, it should be flying nighttime intercept missions, but those have yet to be implemented.

Other than the U-2VS, of course
busdriver Posted March 8, 2021 Posted March 8, 2021 @Pantsy be sure to get @Juri_JS's most excellent SP campaign Night Fighters over the Kuban. 1

Other than the U-2VS, of course It pretty much was mostly PO-2 / U-2VS and the R-5 (another VVS biplane), with a handful of other VVS medium bombers acting as night nuisance raiders as well. For the Luftwaffe, there were two night fighter Geschwaders on the Eastern Front, NJG 100 and NJG 200, and looking at the kills, most of them were PO-2 / U-2's, some A-20's and other twin engine bombers, with a small number of single engine fighters( shot down at dusk times). Pilot Gustav Francsi was the leading Eastern Front night fighter ace, with 49 victories. Out of his first 10 kills, 9 were U-2VS / PO-2's. He operated with NJG 100, II Gruppe. NJG 100 was born from 1./NJG 5, which was made to protect U-Boat bases from RAF night bombing in France, but they were relocated and re-designated to the eastern front. NJG 200 was more of a hodge podge, as it was used as night fighter and training/testing squadron, with two Gruppe operating on the North and South end of the Eastern Front. Another famous eastern front night fighter pilots is Josef Kociok, and his kills are as follows: 4 x PO-2 1 x R-5 2 x A-20 1 x MiG 1 x LaGG Thats just for his time in dedicated night fighter units of NJG 200, as he got an extra 2 x A-20 , 3 x PS-84, 1 x DB-3 , 2 x SB-2, 1 x Yak-4, and 1 x MBR-2 with 10.(N)./Zerstörergeschwader1 flying at night. These units were formed to fight back against the night raids by the VVS bombers, which were mostly PO-2 / U-2VS's and R-5's. However, there were a lot of other aircraft when the PO-2 became proved too vulnerable, but these were easier to spot and hear, so the PO-2 was generally returned to flight status. The DB-3 was probably one of the other most common VVS night bomber. As pointed out by ACG_Burdovka, the VVS did operate large night bomber formations, but the Luftwaffe night fighters were not in sufficient numbers to counter that threat. The Eastern Front night fighter pilots, especially ones that had flown on the western front, remarked that the East was easier to night fight, as they were not subjected to jamming, and the VVS did not expect night fighters, so they could take the russian pilots by surprise. Not like the BOS career, which currently is pretty much 90% intercept missions, which is quite weird with the underpowered ground attack only version we got. 1
RyanR Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 The 110 is tons of fun in Kuban Career. Amazingly agile. My only gripe is flying from rear bases means long transit times. I'm glad the question was asked about only intercept missions. I was curious as well. -Ryan
I./JG52_Woutwocampe Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 Im soon going to be done with my 110E BOM career and Im going to prolong it into BOS. Is the 110 still available in BOS? E or G?. If its still available, how was the 110 used in BOS? Offense or defense role?

Currently as I posted above, it is mainly bomber and ground attack aircraft intercept missions. The two times I started a BOS career with the 110 E2 (it is too early for the G2, the correct version would be the F2), I had one free hunt mission, one ground attack mission and up to ten intercept missions. In another thread Luke posted, he wants to change the missions for BOS, so you get more ground attack missions in future. 1

The Soviet ADD (long-range bomber command) flew hundreds of sorties per night in the spring and summer of 1943, the Il-4 (DB-3F) medium bomber being the mainstay of the night bomber units. Some of these raids, such as those against German troop buildups around the Kursk salient, reached up to 200 bombers attacking a target. I definitely wouldn't count that as 'a handful'. If anything, nighfigting on the Eastern Front has been greatly overlooked mostly because the Germans never had sufficient resources to counter the Soviet night bombers (ineffectual as they were materially, they weren't negligible and they were very detrimental to morale). Hence, it's been relegated almost to non-existance. Bergstrom's BlackCross/RedStar provides some good insight into night fighting in the East. Edited March 13, 2021 by ACG_Burdokva typos 1
