Game sound output recently too low

Recommended Posts

For some odd reason the game's sound output has become very low these past few days for me. All other sound output from other apps is fine, but even at 100% full volume in the game's settings and 100% volume in whatever headset or speakers I am using, the volume of the game is now so low as to be barely heard.

I can't think of any changes I have recently made to my gaming computer - anyone have any ideas I can try?

Might be an easy fix - Perhaps you've accidentally reduced Il-2's volume in the 'volume mixer' for Windows 10, or Windows in its infinite wisdom decided to do it for you. That allows you to set the volume for individual apps independent of the speaker volume and the game volume. So the game outputs 100% sound, then the volume mixer reduces it to 20% or something even while your 'master control' is at 100% and the game is trying to output 100%.

I think Il-2 has to be running for this to work, so start Il-2 then tab out to the desktop. Right click your volume control and click "open volume mixer". It should show system sounds on the left and applications able to output sound on the right. Check to see that Il-2's setting is at the same level as your speakers. If it's lower than the speakers, set it to match them.

Take your headphones off before this though! Don't want to blow your eardrums with 100% sound. I find with my headphones anything above 8 or so can induce ringing in my ears from long sessions.

Bingo, @RedKestrel, that was the easy fix - thank you!  I completely forgot that volume mixer feature can set the volume for individual games, and I also forgot to notice you have to scroll to the right in it to see all the apps affected, and that Il-2 has to be running to be listed. :salute:
