austinnh Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 I have limit VR view disabled but I'm still finding that the game stops me from putting my head close to the instrument panel or through the canopy. I find this a very disorienting and unpleasant experience because my brain perceives this as the entire airplane and world moving with my head. From some reading this is because I have "realism: expert" but also I play multiplayer and it sounds like most multiplayer servers force this setting? Is this true? Is there no way for me to play multiplayer in VR without this (aside from hunting down the few servers that don't force it)?
Panzerlang Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 The 'proper' servers have it on to stop people sticking their heads through the plexiglass and cheating. 1
Charlo-VR Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 @austinnh, it's possible you are experiencing something I've experienced with my G2. Occasionally after spawning into a cockpit I realize I can't move my head around as much as I should be able to, e.g. to look around the gunner's ammo belt in certain German bombers. The only fix I have discovered so far is to disconnect my Reverb G2 from my computer to get the head tracking working again (which of course, means I have to restart the game). I am now in the habit upon my first spawning of moving my head right up to the gun sight to see if the cockpit moves away from me. If it does then I know I have to restart my G2. You should be able to move you head close to gauges, the gunsight, etc., even with VR view limited in your IL-2 game settings. If the above doesn't apply, then perhaps if you are in a very dark room your VR headset's cameras can't quite tell where your head is. For my G2 I rarely use the controllers, and I don't need them to fly IL-2.
austinnh Posted January 16, 2021 Author Posted January 16, 2021 @Charlo-VR I don't think it's that. When I have the canopy open it lets me stick my head out. In some planes it lets me put my head up to the gunsight, but some are more restrictive. @JG51-Hetzer Yeah that's the impression I had. It is not a good reason to cause people discomfort or make the game inaccessible to those who are more sensitive to motion sickness. We're not even trying to poke through the canopy but sometimes just shifting around in the seat I accidentally "bump" my head. Besides this is not a "fair" game. Planes are imbalanced, as they were historically. TrackIR allows you to crane your neck around with ease for long periods of time. High resolution and high FOV make a huge difference. All of these are much bigger "cheats" than poking your head through the canopy. Hell my fancy joystick grants me a bigger advantage. I mean I can kind of understand if a server were hosting a tournament with mirror matchups (same planes on both sides) and some regulations around headsets and flight controllers. But that's not what's going on. It's the implementation that is the biggest problem. It wouldn't be a problem if the vision just went dark or became blurred when you got to close to the canopy. That would cause no discomfort/nausea while still preventing me from "cheating" (by leaning forward to read my gauges). I've played lots of VR games and this is the only thing that has really gotten to me. And it's unrealistically restrictive. It stops me when my eyes/nose are still quite far (a few inches) from the glass. Flight goggles aren't that big. Plus there's aforementioned issue of (in some planes, like the FW-190) not even letting me lean forward to read the gauges or get closer to the gunsight. 2
firdimigdi Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 I think that this feature is OK but it would benefit from louder audio feedback. There is a very subtle bumping sound when you hit the sides of the canopy which is not audible at all when in flight.
