Strewth Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 Hi everyone and Happy New Year to all. Apologies for the title, but I had no way to describe this. Allow me to explain; I have been on flight sims since the mid 90's, when we loaded them with floppies and I paid stupid money for a Pentium with 1.2Gb HDD and 32Mb of RAM. I bought the very first IL-2 Sturmovik and fell in love with teh series, buying every upgrade / addition since. I was a regular on Hyperlobby in the days when Oleg used to fly there. In 2008 we got wiped out in a flood and I ended up working overseas again in remote areas for the best part of a decade, so I had very little to do with flight sims, but still had a copy of IL-2 CoD. Due to work locations, basically all of my gaming became offline, with the likes of the Assault Squad series and the Silent Hunter series, as I could play offline on a moderately good laptop. In the last couple of years I have been back in Oz and recently decided to build myself a new computer, making it capable of flight sims again and thought for the price to build, I would go reasonably high end: Corsair Carbide Series 275R Airflow ATXTempered Glass Case Gigabyte B550 Aorus Master AM4 ATXMotherboard Gigabyte 850W 80+ Gold Power Supply Crucial P1 1TB Main Drive Western Digital 2TB Secondary Drive Ryzen 7 3800XT 8 Core AM4 3.9GHzCPU Processor Corsair Hydro Series H100x Liquid CPU Cooler Corsair 32GB (2x16GB)CMK32GX4M2D3600C18 Vengeance LPX3600MHz DDR4 RAM Asus GeForce RTX 3060 Ti TUF Gaming OC8G Graphics Card I also picked up a near new Oculus Rift headset second hand from a young bloke for a couple of hundred bucks. Well. What I can say is; Things have certainly improved over the years. So.... Here come the conundrum: I purchased most games in the more recent years through Steam. They have been okay, but I was unaware of IL-2 selling seperately, so have been using Steam out of convenience. 1. Am I screwed with Steam purchases? 2. will the purchases from here run with the Steam main games (IL-2 Great Battles series)? 3. Is there any way to seperate from Steam with what I have? 3a. Or do I have to purchase all again? 4. Is the IL-2 Sturmovik (web page) download system user friendly toward computer upgrades and new systems? Thank you ahead of time for any assistance, as I know there are always many decent people and developers on these forums willing to help. Cheers and Kind Regards.
Panzerlang Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 1) No, Steam and direct-purchase from here work perfectly together. 2) As above. 3) and 3a) as above. Purchases direct from here mean IL2 get all the money, which is good. 4) The entire package of modules is already on your system now, further purchases simply activate more bits of it. 1
Strewth Posted January 3, 2021 Author Posted January 3, 2021 Thank you JG51-Hetzer. I have always preferred to support the developer as directly as possible. I was looking at the the Battle of Bodenplatte- Premium Edition as an addition to the Battle of Stalingrad. So I can purchase it from here and it will run along with the others on Steam? That is good news. Does it live iin the Steam VR accessible library, or do I have to access it elsewhere? Your help and knowledge is mauch appreciated.
Panzerlang Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 (edited) I don't have any IL2 stuff from Steam but I'm aware there's a way to link bits from there to here. Personally, if I wasn't short of disposable income, I'd re-buy all the modules I wanted directly while they're on sale. I have two accounts and have pretty much done that already (one account was made for running a server). £54 got me the four main modules (again) that I use. My other account has everything except BoN and FC2. You'll also get the nice tags under your name if you re-buy the lot directly from here (you can't get the tags via steam-purchased modules). Gold coloured = full priced, bronze are sale purchases (I think). Gold and Silver coloured are pre release purchases, gold the premium edition, silver the standard edition. Bronze is purchased after official release. @StrewthTOG_Strewthwhen you purchase content here in the IL-2 store, the game will ask you, when you start it for the first time after the content is activated, if you want to link your Steam account and your IL-2 account. Click on yes and everything will run through Steam. Only disadvantage of this is, the content, you purchased through IL-2 website, will not show up in your Steam DLC list and the content, you purchased through Steam will not show up here in the forum under your avatar. 1

So if he (for example) buys FC here he won't be able to play it if he launches BoS via Steam?! 1

No, you misunderstood me. It will be in his Steam library, so he can play it. But there is a list of the DLCs in Steam, so you can see all your Steam content. And in this list it won't show up. I just mentioned it, because in the past there was a player, who saw it as a negative point, that he can't see all his purchases in this list. But all content you purchase, IL-2 website or Steam, will show in the list on top inside the game, and therefore will be playable. It is just that you can't see it in Steam, as you can't see Steam purchases here in the IL-2 forum. But it has nothing to do with what you can play. EDIT: NONSENS! It will not show in the Steam library, because the library is the place, where you can find your DLCs. It will show at the top right corner inside of your game, in the main menu of your game. This is the important place, which shows you, which games of the Great Battles Series you own. Edited January 3, 2021 by Yogiflight 1
BlitzPig_EL Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 I originally purchased Battle of Stalingrad on Steam, and have purchased every other iteration of the game via the IL2 store here on the website, and linked my content with Steam one time. It works just fine. I start the game by using the desktop exe Icon, which first starts Steam, then starts the game. All my patches download through Steam without issue. Do not fret this. It works just fine, and welcome aboard. 1 1
Mac_Messer Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 In one sentence : if when ingame, you chose to link your IL2 (Steam/Webstore) accounts, it doesn`t matter what and where you buy. However, you can sometimes grab better deals at the webstore. 1
Strewth Posted January 4, 2021 Author Posted January 4, 2021 (edited) Cheers all for the explanations. I feel much more comfortable dealing with the direct webstore now. I had actually contemplated having to buy the steam content again, but directly if nescessary, but this seems like a good arrangement. By the way, if anyone has an easy answer: Why does TrackIR correctly restrict your head from passing through the cockpit, but VR does not? I am loving the VR, but that part is weird. Cheers all. Done. And works as described. Thanks again for the assistance. Edited January 4, 2021 by StrewthTOG_Strewth gramma

Strewth Posted January 5, 2021 Author Posted January 5, 2021 DrKarrot, Thanks mate. Much appreciated.
