Running in slow motion

I have been away from the game for a couple months, life got in the way, and now I am back but experiencing this slow motion issue.  Things run fine until I get into as situation with a moderate amount of aircraft and then everything slows down. This also seems to happen if I start recording a track in game. I am assuming it is something to do with the CPU not keeping up as my frame rates are fine. I never used to experience this so I am wondering if there was something in a recent update that may have caused this? Or maybe just a fresh install of the game is needed?

System Specs:
i7-6700K CPU @4GHz
16GB Ram

SSD Drive

Nvidia GTX 1660 Super

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

judging your system specs, you should run the game quite smoothly without any problem. There must be something other going on. First, to find out we need some more

information:

1. Game's graphic settings (screenshot)

2. NVidia control panel settings (screenshot)

3. Power management settings of your Win OS

4. Mods you are possibly running

5. Are you running in VR or 2D?

You see, there are other things that might cause the trouble you have.

I used to see these "slowdowns" during some Bodenplatte career missions. Setting the frontline density (I might not remember its name correctly, it was one of the career options) to medium from high cured the problem for me.

No worries, I figured there would be more info needed ?  Requested screen shots are attached. As for Mods I am not running any. I am running in 2D on a 1920x1080 monitor.

Thanks!!

Okidoki,

now, first of all, you need to check your power settings of your computer (Win OS), because I see something I don't like and which slows your system down.

Check this:

Go to your additional power settings and make sure to select "High performance" option. Otherwise your Win OS will always throttle down your system, when performance

is actually needed. You won't hurt your system or its components.

Next thing and interesting information:

1043304759_ScreenresolutionAirWolves.thumb.png.9e05daf6ae6ff859e10a3e2b56129de3.png

I see that you run a 1920x1080 native resolution at 60Hz, so make sure to run the game at the same resolution (what you actually do), but it makes no sense to set

a FPS target of 100 in your game's settings. This might hinder your game to run well synchronized with your actual screen. Set it to 60 or 120 or to OFF. And btw.

as long as you don't run your game in Fullscreen mode, it doesn't make sense either to set any values here because your game will run capped at 60 FPS.

Now, finally, let's see your game's graphic settings you actually have. I recognized some performance hogs - here are my suggestions:

892647780_GamessettingsAirWolves.thumb.png.e17df715770df6e5ebf87f4feec8f75c.png

1 - reconsider this and change it to medium or high, because this can be a performance killer

2 - reconsider this too - might be a performance killer too

3 - change this to high, otherwise you will loose some considerable performance

4 - well known performance killer too - HDR/SSAO do a lot of harm to your performance for nothing.

Maybe you want also think about the option "Distant buildings", because this will use a lot of your VRAM. YMMV.

So, that's all from me. I hope this will help you to get a decent performance again. And don't forget, what @norsetto suggested when you run career campaigns.

Thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately it's not curing the issue. It seems to really kick in when I start a track recording. I thought maybe it had something to do with TacView also recording so I disabled that to avail. I even tried reinstalling the game with no success. It's odd because I never used to have this issue. I would run at those setting while recording a track and recording on OBS with no problems. Now as soon as I record I go into slow motion. Also oddly enough I don't experience this in multiplayer, just in single player. Especially with scripted campaigns and PWCG campaigns. Something has changed, but I have no idea what.

Thanks again!

Update on this issue, I think I may have solved it, but a bit more testing is in order. Here's what appears to have been going on. Side note, I kept going down this rabbit hole after looking at my CPU usage while I was experiencing the slow motion and it was sitting at about 25%. That told me it probably wasn't a CPU issue.

First off I run in windowed mode not full screen mode. This is because of some overlays I use for OBS as well as SRS Radio. While poking around in the start up config I found the following line...

Win_Height = 720

Win_Width = 1280

Now this seemed odd because even though I run in windowed mode I scale the window to my full screen resolution which is 1920x1080. So I decided to run IL2 in full screen, which in the start up config file was set to 1920x1080, and what do you know, it all ran fine with no slow motion. When I went back to the start up config I noticed that it has now set the Win_Height = to 1080 and the Win_Width = to 1920. I went back to windowed mode with these new settings and so far everything appears to be good there too. I changed it back to 720x1280 and the slow motion came back.  So in short this seems to have been the fix. However, I need to run a few scripted campaigns to see if my hypothesis holds up there as well. Unfortunately while trying to solve this I did a clean reinstall of IL2 and lost all of my scripted campaign progress data.

So here's what I think was happening from a layman's point of view, if you're a DEV reading this maybe you can confirm my suspicion...

At some point an update reset Win_Height and Win_Width parameters in the start up config. And since the game thought that it was supposed to be displaying 720x1280 based on that setting. In reality it was displaying to a window that had been scaled to 1080x1920. Because of this I am betting there was some weird scaling shit (Technical Term) that was going on and forcing things to slow down to accommodate for it. Again this is just wild speculation on my part, but it seems logical to my non-programer brain.

If you are reading this and are so inclined to help test this theory. Set your IL2 to run in windowed mode, set the following parameters in the startup config file.

Win_Height = 720

Win_Width = 1280

Then scale the windowed mode window up to full screen and see what happens in a scripted campaign. I am betting you will go into the slow motion time warp as well. The fix should be to just run in Full Screen mode once and it will reset the Win-Height and Win_Width parameter to your full screen resolution.

Thanks to all of you that offered suggestions in this thread!

Well back to square one. After testing a bit in PWCG campaigns and Scripted Campaigns my theory didn't hold up. Seem if I put all the settings to the lowest in PWCG it's okay, but anything and Medium and were back to slomo! Interestingly enough this doesn't happen in the builtin career mode or in multiplayer. And when I am running in slow motion I am still only taxing the CPU for about 25%. The thing that triggers it is turning on the track record.

Same problem here in VR with medium setting with RTX2080/9700K/opencomposite: lots of stuttering, and reducing details dont really help...

Me too on many career missions and campaigns. Online is fine. Also running an i7-9750h and rtx 2070 max Q. This is a big issue for the single player side of things. Thinking about doing a clean install. Reducing density doesnt help that much.
