Has anyone had a problem using Thrustmaster's TARGET joystick software and XNRS on Windows 11?

I'm using TARGET to combine a Warthog throttle and stick into a single joystick device (a legacy of the old limit on joysticks in CloD and il2-46). But XNRS loses contact with the device randomly during flying. No other software has this problem, they're all able to see the combined device.

Reinstalling XNRS and updating TARGET hasn't solved it.

Looking at the active layers, I have one for Necksafer and one for NOVENDOR. Is this correct?

No but it is likely not lying, the game probably re-acquires them. The usual suspects apply (USB power delivery et al).

As a failsafe, leftover from the nonXR version that had some issues, I got a voiceattack command that calls a .bat to restart the NS program with a long press of the same button combo I use to re-center VR.

Thanks for the tips. In the end I solved it by mapping XRNS to keyboard combos then using JoyToKey to use those with my controllers. I use JoyToKey anyways so didn't have to introduce anything new.

This is excellent, thank you. This is very much a necessity for VR combat. Without it I was unable to get around there.

Do I understand it correctly that this utility only adds left and right view angle and not up and down view angle?

If you're using Opencomposite running OpenXR then you can run the XRNS. That version gives you pitch rotation as well. Regular VRNS + SteamVR does not.

Since DCS latest update, I, too, cannot get the OpenXR NS working. @J2_NobiWan Any chance you could take a look at this? Can't fly without it!

Cheers,

Beta5a is still working fine for me with the latest native OpenXR MT version and a G2. I would recommend trying to uninstall and reinstall XRNS...

There should be no dependancy on the install location of IL2... maybe a problem with access rights? XRNS or VRNS? Are you running the game as admin, maybe?

still working fine and beta4a! But for use it with WMR you need a few steps :)

1.activate OpenXR in WMR Portal for Reverb or etc and in Oculus Home for Oculus(best choise to use OpenXR-Runtime-Switcher https://github.com/WaGi-Coding/OpenXR-Runtime-Switcher )

2. in shortcut from DCS.exe(mt and non mt) to add

"...\DCS World OpenBeta\bin\DCS.exe" --force_enable_VR --force_steam_VR --force_OpenXR

3.launch it shortcut

4.game himself to start steamVR and a few seconds to stop and close steamVR

5.in game now works fine XRNeckSafer4a and OpenXR Toolkit :)

:yahoo:

p.s. with beta5a in Reverb issue with recentering VR view in DCS !!!(((

I developed a workaround: using TARGET to send precious, unmodified, keyboard keys for centre, look left, look right to XNRS. This continued to work even when XNRS lost contact with the Thrustmaster combined device.

But TARGET looks to be in a fragile state, I read somewhere that it was written by a third party and Thrustmaster struggle to maintain it. Dunno how true.

The next option is to use some other software and I've used Autohotkey in the past. Now, there are a number of issues with that:

1. it polls joysticks, whereas TARGET runs the hardware directly and can detect key-up, therefore AHK can't program some of the Warthog Throttle key positions that don't have a down state;

2. AHK seems unable to drive SRS.

It's all rather a mess, because there don't seem to be many well maintained pieces of code out there that are as sophisticated as TARGET.

EDIT - Reinstalling TARGET without the devices attached may have helped.

I recently upgraded to a Nvidia 4090 GPU and Varjo Aero VR headset and my VR Necksafer doesn't work (Steam VR).  I re-downloaded it (it was the same file as I'd downloaded before) and reinstalled it. No joy.

My Army injuries prevent me from rotating my head so VR Necksafer was a godsend, but no longer works. Any suggestions to get it working?

You'll want to get the XRNecksafer then, it has more features then VRNecksafer and is still getting support.  Here's the Discord link: https://discord.gg/CcfwQdze

What is the main differences between XRNecksafer and VRNecksafer?

I don't use any of them but maybe I should try. My neck can feel a bit stiff after I been playing and getting older doesn't make it easier!

Any preferences between the two of them?

Very basically, VRNecksafer is for use with SteamVR, XRNecksafer is for use with OpenXR/OpenComposite... personally I could not fly in VR without using (one of) them..

But I use SteamVR so will it work? I haven't a clue about OpenXR/Opencomposite.

It's using the chapter one with the OpenVR as @mbucchia told me a while back which was only meant to calibrate tracking once in a while, not to be used steadily like it is with an HMD.  It works well, but with the Varjo Aero less so as the Aero uses more memory then other HMDs.  Varjo lessened the memory usage in a patch not to long ago but I'm not sure if it was for this reason.  The OpenXR XRNecksafer does work well with the Aero though, thus my suggestion to use it.

I understand this mod is not functioning presently, after a recent update. Is that the case? At least I could not get it working. This mod is a necessity for VR users, at least to be able to see what's coming at you. Though, given the lack of noise here; I suspect it is just me who can't get it working.

Mine isn't working now. I use Steam VR but don't play a Steam version. I bought IL2 from the IL2 site.

Posted

There are two versions of this app. The original one, VRNS, is for SteamVR runtime and will only work with that. The other version, XRNS, it's for those who are using Openxr either directly with games that support it or through Opencomposite. That one will only work with those runtimes. Either version doesn't care where you bought the game from. It only cares which VR runtime you're using. That's why there's two versions. They aren't interchangeable. The VRNS version is a bit of a pain to set up as it doesn't have an installer. It also doesn't have smooth autorotation. (it does have an experimental version that does but I forget if it worked for me). Follow the directions on the github page. Or the instructions are in the Readme file in the zip you download.

@J2_NobiWan this is a great program!!

The only thing I would ask for is to somehow reduce the shakyness when using autorotation (not the snap mode).   It's not too bad, and that's coming from a long time TrakIR user as that required a lot of head control when lining up to shoot.

Other than that, thank you, thank you for your time creating this neck saving app for VR in IL2.

Sorry if this has been brought up before but I don't have the time to read all 25 pages of this thread.. ?

I just played using XRNeck in multiplayer for the first time and the program did work, but cut out on me after a few minutes. Alt-Tabbed out, restarted the app, it worked again, then it cut out again after a few minutes. Never happened to me in single player, ever.

Only difference between MP and SP in this case would be that I don't fly with restricted VR view in SP, but the server I was on had restricted views.

?

I am having an issue with xrnecksafer where sometimes there is a lateral displacement of the head view when turning. Such that the point of view moves outside the cockpit. I can't work out what is causing it. Has anyone experienced this and if so any solutions?

In game "Default VR view" key press and the "Set Center Button" on Necksafer itself must be on the same assigned key press so they are both properly aligned, just like the directions on the app point out.

Thanks but I have these already setup. I don’t think I explained myself very well. I have been using VRnecksafer and XRnecksafer for about 18 months. It’s just a random thing that keeps happening and I can’t work out what is causing it. With my head centred in the cockpit I can turn my head to the side but my POV moves laterally outside of the cockpit, then re-enters and re-centres, as I move my head to look forward again. I will try to post some pictures tomorrow.

I believe the shifting problem can be minimized if the HMD is positioned at the correct position at the moment the VR runtime (WRM portal for G2) is starting. "Correct" means on your head, sitting on your chair ready to fly. Of course this should be compensated for automatically, but one of the last DCS updates broke it. I am sure it can be fixed, but currently I can't tell you when.

Hey did you have any fix for this? It's happening to me and it's annoying the hell out of me. I'll turn my head to look behind me and either end up on the wing or in the fuselage :/

No. I just followed NobiWan’s advice and it works sometimes. I think it is as long as you do this the first time you use DCS.

Necksafer started to behave a little strangely for me in IL 2  a week or 2 ago. It is the lateral shift -20 used to work nicely. But now I shift strangely and it is not the same in each direction. While it is behaving like this, I have put it back to 0 and at least now I don’t move in the seat when I rotate my head.

I use it daily in OpenXR in IL-2, have 0 issues. You do seem to need to hit the recenter key when first starting to kick in the auto-rotation, but works great..

Posted

It works in open composite.  Needs initialising by allocating a center button once and then using that button each time you start the game.

Just be aware there are two versions of the tool. One for steamvr (VRNS) and another (XRNS) for openxr. They aren't interchangeable so be sure you're trying to use the right one.

Will XRNS work with a per game install of openXR  instead of open composite?

Yes, just replace the stock Openvr_api.dll in x:\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\bin\game with the one supplied for OpenXR (Rename the original to Orig_Openvr_api.dll or similar first so you can go back if necessary). ..  Love XRNS and it's smooth autorotate in Yaw and Pitch, works like TIR5 does in 2D... Very smooth. I use 200% starting at 20 degrees in both axis to get the amplification I want, YMMV.
