What is your favourite plane?

Recommended Posts

Not talking about performance, utility and viability. Just looks, overall feel, the engine roar, what you like to just fly. Any low-tier kites that suck, yet you still love them? Maybe it's all about that legendary status, or you just prefer what works?

For me, the Mig-3 won my heart a long time ago, mostly due to the challenge of just getting this thing into the air cleanly if at all. It sounds great, likes high speed and low altitudes, can equip a dual .50 cal setup and pretty much looks like a hot-rod dragster. The long nose does not help deflection shooting, but hey, I did mention the challenge aspect.

I like very much the FW190 A5 and the BF 110, tough planes with great armament. The 190 has great sound. And the He111 because it is one og the biggest ones.

Il 2 and Yak 1b are also my favorites.

My favourite is the P-47. I've always liked it and I've flown it an awful lot in this game. After the DM/FM update to it that came with the release of the D-22 it really feels like it should.  It's steady, got light controls for such a big bird, and the cockpits are wonderfully modeled in game. Plus I enjoy the engine management.

Am I particularly effective with it? No. But every once in a while I manage to surprise a 190D-9 or 109K-4 and that is worth it.

I always love the craft that I land safely after a challenging mission. Especially if it has a LOT of bullet holes in it with dark smoke trailing. Simply great craft. :salute:

I really love the P-38, and the Focke Wulf 190A8, both beautiful aircraft that can take a lot of damage and still get you home.

Of the planes currently in the sim, I love the BF110 the most. It can do anything, it's beautiful, and it's pleasant to fly.
I also love the Macchi and the Stuka - both oft maligned.

I really enjoy flying the Spitfire Vb, just nice and responsive even if you only get a couple of seconds of trigger time with the cannons. Visually I love the look of the MiG-3, looks like a racing plane with that great big nose, but I can't fly it well at all.

The runner up is Yak-7b for me. It's an ugly, generic looking plane. It requires some precision and focus to properly manage the radiators in combat. And it has a very limited ammo load.

But is it pleasant to fly! Docile, stable, easy to perform all kinds of maneuvers. And while it's certainly not a top tier performer, it is definitely no slouch but a capable fighter. I can honestly understand why the average Soviet pilot preferred the Yaks over all other types in the VVS KA.

And, above all, the 109. Back when I started with flight sims, about 2006, that plane was a horrid experience for me. I couldn't takeoff or land in it, I couldn't perform BCM and ACM in it, I didn't know how to use it. It has now become almost organic for me to fly it. It has its vices but it's like wearing a pair of well worn quality shoes.

I do enjoy a number of other planes but nothing just feels as comfortable as those two.

Any, and all, variants of the 109 . . . . . engineering-porn pure bliss.

Yeah, feel you on this. Sometimes I do smile when pushing the Fw 190 A-8 throttle into max power *lawn mower sounds intensify*

That being said while it feels good to fly, I find it difficult to maintain an advantage against the late war Allied fighters with it; which naturally pushes me away from using it often. That's why I still stick with the trusty '109 more times than not.

Seeing the gunner and crew shifting around in the spacious cockpits of the He111 (and Ju88) definitely makes for a nice feeling. Even though both are not particularly fast in level flight, they can still be entertaining to fly and I enjoy them. They both demand you to plan ahead and be cunning to survive, but it can be very rewarding when things work out. The Ju88 especially is a laugh when you come running in on a high speed dive and people turn around and go 'wut... no man you can't be doing that... its not a Bf 110'.

One time, had another player join as a gunner in my Ju88 while attacking an airfield and an enemy fighter pretty much impaled itself on my left wing as I was banking, before it slid off and crashed into the sea... all in the middle of a crazy low level melee. Couldn't help but laugh in hysterics while bizarrely thinking - I probably wouldn't see this happen if I was flying another aircraft.

The He-111.

Is the closest we have to a heavy bomber.

We don't have it in the game (yet) but my favorite plane is the early P40 (B or C).

I hope we get one in the game, if I'm not mistaken, Russia had some of them.

And even if it's a bit out of place on the maps we have, I'm sure mission makers would make some interesting match ups against E7's or F2's.

Have a nice day.

i-16 - I like the open cockpit and there are really good campaigns for it (I am SP guy)

Then I would say the Spitfire Mk.IX and the Tempest (which I play less because of AI issues - e.g drifting at landing and other AI wingment issues)

Tempestade

Tempest, Yak-7B and I-16 for my heart, but rationally speaking Spitfire Mk.IX its the more balanced in red side.

I'd like to have the Vought F4U Corsair in a modern sim as plane of the allied side.

Don't know.. I have no real favourite. I fly the 109 because it's my 'duty'. ;)

Zero, but if it comes to ingame planes that would be this small fella. I16 is just pure joy.maxresdefault.jpg

I'm going to go waaay out on the limb and proclaim my love of the P-51. Fashionable as it is in flightsim circles to mock the Mustang, I'll let its history and record speak for itself. As to looks, it is a beautiful design to my eyes. One that didn't suffer the same fate as did many other WWII era fighters as their designers added more lumps and bumps to eek out more performance from them as they matured.

Me too! It was a mod for SWOTL back in the 1990s which introduced me to it... I was shocked by the lack of armament but I was more surprised about how satisfying it was. Thanks to that mod getting me more stories from the Russian side - I was excited by Il-2 coming out (and partly because of the Mig). It didn't disappoint... it is an aircraft that mixes a very fine advantage initially (good roll rate, and excellent speed early in the war) with a lot of disadvantages that make it an interesting underdog of an aircraft... I always feel a bit Chivralric as a result! I don't tend to use the later armament options...

After that, Fw-190, P-39... Hs-129... U2VS... I'm probably coming around to the P-51... those are the planes that give me the most joy. The P-38 is also quite a performer and the Tempest... but they might be a bit too perfect for some purposes... not quite enough flaws.

It is underpowered, undergunned, and its armored cockpit isn’t worth a damn given the tendency of its wings to fold when hit by AAA. But there is something that I love about its look, its cockpit, and its crazy taxi/takeoff procedure.

Spit Vb, P40, U2, in that order.  Learning to love the Yak 1b, but yeah, it's like settling into a relationship with a roomate. It's comfortable, but the romance is missing.

Too many. I mean the Tempest/Typhoon and Spitfire are all near and dear. But I find a lot to like in many other aircraft. The whole Yak series, the MiG-3, the A-20B , the Fw190 series and the Bf110's. All favourites!

There's so many that I like on this sim, from bombers to transports to fighters... but having to select only ONE, it would be the P-38.Always liked the P-47, but after flying the P-38 I got hooked.

I love the BF-110 G-2, great multirole aircraft. It flies smooth and can take some damage. the cockpit is nice except for the speedo being placed right behind the stick

Recently, I have found a love for the Hawker Tempest. The amount of raw power in the engine and armament in such a sleek design is just awesome. I must say though, my all time favourite has to be the Hawker Hurricane. A workhorse, well liked aircraft that looks great and was so versatile in so many theatres.

Luftwaffe: FW190 A3

USAAF: P38

Britain: Spitfire Mk IX

Russia: I16

Italy: Not many options, are there

Honorable mention to the Me110 as my favorite non fighter.

Plane I fly the best in: Me109 F4.  But I still like the 190.  Just need more seat time (or so I tell myself)

Recently had a neat QMB Fw190 A3 against 2 Lagg3.  Head on pass got the first one smoking and flames the second within 2 seconds.  Never done that before.

For me it's basically any of the Fw 190s, the cockpit feels really cool to sit in in VR (I love looking out over the D9's lange Nase), as an engineer I like the way Kurt Tank designed it in a very practical manner and I think it's a great looking aircraft, except the D9 but I love it just the same because of the reasons why it looks kinda wonky.

Of course I love most of the planes in the sim and could write a paragraph on each.

Honourable mention: Me 163. Such a crazy, fascinating aircraft. I know the chances of it getting added to IL-2 are next to nothing but man I'd love to take that thing for a spin...

My three favorite airframes of all time are the Supermarine Spitfire, the P-38 Lightning and the Fiat G.55 (Italian theater next, pretty please...?). Luckily most of those are already covered in GB, with the Spitfire Mk.XIV to come not too far from now.

Ingame, split across the different nations, I have following preferences:

- VVS: I-16 (honorable mention: Yak-7b)

- RAF: Spitfire Mk.IX (h. m.: Hawker Tempest)

- USAAF: P-38-J (h. m.: P-51)

- Luftwaffe: FW-190 A5 (h. m.: HS-129)

- RA: Macchi 202

I have no particular game favourite, I just love being able to fly all of them, picking whatever takes my fancy at any time, all are special in their own right.;)

If I really must pick one then the I-16.:drink2:

For real aircraft the Hurricane somehow always was my favourite WWII type never quite grasped why exactly, and for the jet age the Buccaneer, but again there are so many that each can be considered unique and worthy of some love from us all.:drinks:

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete.
