Hi all! So, I'm new to the game, and I'm trying to take off in the IL-2 Sturmovik. I've managed to get it off the ground and into the air, after a bit of practice, but I can't seem to climb. I've only got a fuel tank 36% full, so it's not that. I am carrying rockets and a heavy gun iirc. I've set both radiators to 60% open, which has helped my power a tad, but anytime I push the throttle above about 60% I get a warning not to say boost is on and not to use combat power on the way to the target (which I assume is good advice?). I'm struggling to get above even 100m off the ground. Any tips? Thanks.

You probably have your prop pitch (RPM) too high. Look inside the control settings screen -> Plane engine controls -> Propeller RPM control.

You can probably keep your throttle at full, but you have to decrease your RPM a bit until it says you're at either climbing power (yellow) or nominal power (green). You can find exactly which settings you need in the plane specifications (open your map, you'll find them as a tab of your mission orders). Look for the section "Engine modes". For RPM you can use the buttons you specified at the location I mentioned above, mm Hg is your throttle. In the IL2, they're respectively the dial to the bottom left of the altimeter and to the left of the altimeter.

Also, don't forget to retract your landing gear as soon as you're airborne, and keep your speed high enough (around 250kph should be fine). Much slower than that and you can pull on the stick what you want but she won't climb.

Aha, thanks. I didn't know about the connection between RPM and manifold pressure, or that you needed to drop the RPM to stay within the right threshold. She's climbing now. Much appreciated!

If you ever want to fly online with it. Give me a heads up.
I like to fly IL 2 again I miss it. I flew it dedicated the first years.

You're welcome.

Note that every plane behaves differently. Some (Bf-109, Fw-190) have completely automated controls where you only need to move the throttle, others (most Russians) have an RPM governor that maintains a certain RPM while manifold pressure is linked directly to the throttle. Still others have rather pesky controls where manifold pressure is loosely connected to the throttle, but each change in RPM results in a change in manifold pressure and the other way around.

IIRC the il2 1941-1942

Can fly with almost full throttle and full RPM and still be on continous mode...

Also check the plane description and operations. In the il2 you can set arround 90-95% throttle and RPM, and manage if you are on continous or in emergency molde only by mixture.

"Engine has a boost mode which is engaging by setting mixture control lever to maximum position."

The mig3 is somewhat similar. Where you need to change mixture to go into full emergency mode
