Ping question

I'm enjoying MP a lot not only because the skill level of human pilots is far above anything the AI can throw at you but also because it's great to meet chaps from all corners of the world. SP by comparison is ... well, ordinary. But it has it's place of course and an in-house FC career would be great for the SP guys out there and for FC sales. But that's another story.

 

My question is why are some ping ratings on the server list blank? I've found that I can fly on the "blank" servers such as Zoo Wings, RAF20 and Flugpark with no apparent issues so I presume the ping for me is okay. But I'd like to know what they are and why some show a figure and some don't?

It a network related thing. Some internet providers block this protocol (that ping uses) or the server operator can also block pings. This type of network traffic can be used in denial of service attacks, which is why its done.

Thanks Stix. So, as I can see the ping for most servers on the IL2 server list I presume my ISP hasn't blocked anything. I guess the "blank" server operators have blocked their ping for the reasons you describe. I have nothing against that, I just wanted to know what their ping is in order to know which servers are best for me.. Eg, I just tested out the @NO.20_W_M_Thomson RAF20 server (blank ping on server list) and saw on the "flying barans" site I had a ping of 111 which is okay. I like Thommo's server which is a great practice arena but hardly see anyone on it. Anyway, not to worry ....

It's actually 20_McGoun's server. I dropped mine, my machine was getting too old.
