Kerch peninsula into Tunisia, Sicily..

For me, any desert map needs to have a post war Arab-Israeli War scenario.  There are several very nice IAF and REAF skins for the Spitfire IXe and a nice Iraqi Bf-110 but what about the Israeli bombers?

So in anticipation of the new textures for this "Tunisia" repaint, I have made a completely fictional IDF A-20 of the 69th Bomber Squadron.  
Now the Israeli Air Force never used them but since a B-17 is not even a twinkle in the Dev's eye yet, I wanted to have some kind of IDF attack plane.  The IL-2 just didn't look anywhere near right.

So here it is for your perusal and enjoyment...

* Although I don't own the 109G-6 I do have a template for it.  Guess I'll have to buy it now so I can check the skin(s)

* What base color do you want?  Greenish, Desert Tan, Off white, Bluish Grey?  I've seen examples of each.

* If you have a particular plane/profile send it along either here or by message.

I am just commenting... not interested in Israeli air wars.

( I can make a skin, but I have no time in this period...)

By the way I guess that it is some "mutant" version of G14 not G6 (correct me if I'm wrong...)

( Left overs after 1945 is more likely to be G14 ? )

OK.  I mis-understood your comment.  No problem.

However my research shows that the Avia S-99 was based on the G-6 airframe but the S-199 was based on the Gustav airframe, no particular model.

 

"Avia continued building Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6s after the war under the Avia S-99 name, at two aircraft factories in Czechoslovakia: one of them officially called závod Avia (Avia Plant) (1946–48) and závod Avia-Jiřího Dimitrova (Avia-George Dimitroff-Plant, 1948–49) in Čakovice near Prague, as a postwar corporative part of the Automobilové závody, n.p. [Automotive Works, National Corp.]. The other was named závod Vysočany (Vysočany Plant, 1948–49) in Prague, as a corporative part of Letecké závody, n.p. [Aviation Works, National Corp.] but soon ran out of the 109's Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine after many were destroyed during an explosion at a warehouse in Krásné Březno.

The S-199 continued to use the Bf 109G airframe but, with none of the original engines available, an alternative engine had to be used. It was decided that as a replacement for the original engine, the aircraft would use the same (Junkers Jumo 211 F) engine and propeller as the Heinkel He 111 bomber. The resulting combination of parts was an aircraft with extremely poor handling qualities."

 

So for an S-199 the G-14 would be fine.

Hi All,

some WIP Nth Africa scenery screen shots

the map in the west has place names removed, I haven't put the new names in yet. I'll remove all the Russian names across the entire map and put in more Nth African/Middle east type names in. Then 
the next big step is making the buildings look more Nth African/Middle eastern. I'm also redoing the modified grass textures that are in there to include some random plains cactus types and reduce the grass height to stubbly plains type grass's to help with the effect. (full credit for original idea and base hi res textures will be given) theres a long way to go but it will be half passable when done.

WOW!  That does look good!

It looks like you will be doing the whole map?

You can change the map names too?  Perfect.  No more briefs saying "We have coded the map names in the event you are captured."  LOL!

This wouldn't be a bad standalone for those who think the landscapers throughout the IL-2 world are awful lazy especially in the airfields.where the grass grows through the wings.  (Russian "Iron Wheat"?)

Beebop, I'll make the grass edits a separate standalone package as well.

In a few of days I'll upload what I have done so far for people to try out and give feedback or add to.

Just take your time mate... few days sooner or later - means nothing compared to the quality of achievement :good:

 

I prefer to wait longer - just to avoid premature upload of your beta. When you are 100% sure that all the structure of landscape are tuned up, I'll be delighted to "taste" it :o:

Hi Al,

some work on the grass, now have short grass around infrastructure, along road edges and airfields, and the larger grass and flowering bushes in the fields with areas of sparse vegetation where the ground cover is thin. in the pictures you can see the taller grass away from the runways but the apron areas of the concrete runways and the dirt runways proper now have the short grass.

so you don't see grass sticking through aircraft wings etc unless you crash in a paddock, also means vehicles have a verge to use where grass does not come up through the floor etc.

EDIT: Attached revised grass mod I have been working on is now in post lower down the thread, its in jsgme ready format. place unzipped folder into MODs folder and install. It will work on all maps. it has partial files from the set that SARFlytitus created, which he based off 4K grass textures from FF*VaSoK*22. I have edited areas of the sheets to reduce grass heights and changed the texture format to DXT5 as per the original IL2 file type.

I have my config file edited to draw grass at 600m as opposed to stock 100m it flows much better and I didn't see any performance drop.

Readme file included. Thank you SARFlytitus for allowing me to use your original work. I will also upload this set in the thread about Summer flowers. if you get it here you don't require the set in the other thread.

Addendum:

If you use the 'Flower Mod' this mod takes out the flowers. 

However I ran both inadvertently at the same time with no ill effect. 

Not that big a deal for getting rid of the "Russian Iron Grass" that grows through the wings. ?

If you look at the dds files it doesn't totally take out the flowers but it does thin them out quite a bit. Could probably ask Rob to stick a scattering of small flowers into the low grass (on the right in his mod in the pic) to give a few spots of colour here and there. Beyond my skills unfortunately.

Hi All,

I have added some small ground cover type flowers to the low grass areas now. below screen shot of first attempt with no flowers in the grass and the grass with small flowers added. I'll change the flowers in the grass a bit more to add in some yellow colour.

Hi All,

I have placed a few yellow flowers into the grass and made the top of the stalky plants in the baron ground areas a yellow/orange colour and I have given the grass seed pods a slight creamy colour.

I have attached the updated set for testing and feedback, remove the old set from your MODS folder and replace with this set. any comments welcome. please keep in mind I will have a different set for the desert map modification being worked on which will be included with the map mod set. this set is for European landscapes.

Very nice.  The effect is subtle, adds a hint of color and is not garish or distracting.

As much as I liked the original grass+flowers mod by SARFlytitus  the flowers were quite bright but given the grass was tall and in itself was distracting from an immersive environment but I enjoyed it a lot.  I keep it in my JSGME to use every so often to brighten up my day. 

However this mod is, in my opinion,  the perfect evolution of the original grass+flowers and strikes me as what I might expect to see in real life.

I like it very much.

Dear Bob,

 

If anybody admires your work it is me.... but I am not a fan of your gardening of airfields, simply in a horror of mid WW2...flower gardens of any kind - does not suite  may taste    ( or my lack of taste... ) for a Reich defense airfields... 

 

I am looking forward to your possible further "desertification" of Kerch willages and other facilities ?

Esk, I'm hearing you mate,

I'm not 100% sure I like the flowers in amongst the grass yet either. when I do the final release I think I'll have two versions one with the flowers in the grass and one set with just the crisp cut grass.

Think it is because they end up too dense in game due to the tiling effect. Might be ok if you made it a very sparse amount of them so you might end up with just a thin scattering. Of course I've no idea of what open grass fields and wild flowers look like in places like Belgium etc so perhaps it's more realistic than I know. Here the flowers in the grass tend to be weeds.

Apologies, I was asking about the Tunisia Landscape rather than the flowers? I read "Winter mod for Kuban" were the files you used, so wanted to check if the map textures only work with that map and date?

That is correct.  The repaint only works on the Kuban Autumn map and any other autumn map repaint such as one of the winter ones should be removed first before installing this one.

Hi All,

starting to map out which part of which texture sheet goes to each building. So I can then repaint to make them look like mud brick etc with terracotta roves etc. A rather boring laborious testing stage, but once building identified it shouldn't take to long to repaint them.

Also working on swapping out various models that look to European for types that fit in with Med/Nth African feel. nothing magical here just swapping models by renaming files. again a bit tedious swapping one at a time for know building location (using the large light house on the kersk point as a known location to swap into to see which is which.) but again will be worth it if I can modify the look of the towns etc to be more Med/Nth African in appearance.

?  Thanks for taking the time and effort to make this a top tier repaint.  Talk about above and beyond.  The more I see of what you are doing the more I Jones for this repaint.  Boy-o-Boy will it be worth the wait.?

Will there be camels?  The animal not the plane.   ?  (although the map would make an interesting WWI Middle East backdrop, especially out East in the flatlands)
