NOTICES and UPDATES to AIRMEN

9/26/18 - Central victory declared.  See post on page two for final comments and campaign ribbon award.

9/25/18  - Tomorrow is Week 4 of 4 for Black September V.   Entente hoping to extend gains into a respectable stalemate that was the reality of so much of the entire war, while Central hopes to eek out a equally respectable victory by snatching Ententes hopes from their hands!

All non registered players wishing to fly are asked once again to help create the necessary historical imbalance of pilots and resources by opting to FLY ENTENTE in order that they may outnumber Central up to 10 pilots.  DO NOT TRY TO BALANCE SIDES.

9/22/18 - results for week 3 are amended to Entente win.  Individual scores are not affected and the parser will continue to show a Central win.

The full ruling can be read on the official event forum here: http://www.jasta5.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=118&t=14977&p=45549&sid=8562217fc318791f56ccf7687806f7f0#p45549

Current Status:   Central - 2 wins; Entente - 1 win.

9/19/18 - results are suspended from this weeks mission pending review.

9/19/18 - week 3 of 4. Due to the incessant attacks on all three sectors the past few weeks by Entente forces, air frames of CLII's have become diminished slightly.  The effects of repeated bombing of Central forward observation towers has weakened their hastily rebuilt replacements.  Additionally, the culmination of Entente ground forces and tanks have further weakened Central ground defenses to the point where overrunning of Central forces in two or more sectors, will result in Entente claiming victory for the days mission.

Pilot briefings on Flugpark Discord beginning 1730 GMT with hostilities ended at 2200 GMT (convert to your local time zone).  Mercenary pilots not already assigned a team are asked to fly Entente until Entente outnumbers Central by 5-7 pilots. Late arriving non-registered pilots DO NOT balance sides. Overweight Entente by 5-7 pilots.

9/12/18 - week 2 of 4. Pilot briefings on Flugpark Discord beginning 1730 GMT with hostilities ended at 2200 GMT (convert to your local time zone).  Mercenary pilots not already assigned a team are asked to fly Entente until Entente outnumbers Central by 5-7 pilots.

9/3/18 - Based on participant feedback, the mission start time has been changed to 1800 GMT/UTC (convert to your local time zone).  This is two hours later than stated in the rules book.

9/1/18 - 100 pilots registered as of today.  Link to Campaign Planning Forum (private Red and Blue Team areas hosted on Jasta 5 forum).

8/30/18 - 1PL will be flying Entente in the campaign.  Thank you to Lucas and 1PL pilots for their flexibility in helping insure a enjoyable and successful campaign for the event.  96 registered players as of today!

8/28/18 - Test Mission #2 Saturday August 29, 1600-2000 GMT (convert to your local time). This is the final organized test mission before the start of the campaign.

8/27/18 - Practice Mission up on separate server without any penalties enforced etc.  No parser so no virtual life death.

NOTE:  during the campaign the campaign will be its own tour thus preserving any streaks/virtual lives of players during the normal Flugpark activities.

Campaign Overview

Increasing pressure from Entente ground forces, supported by armor and aerial units is being brought to bear against the Central Powers.  The airmen on both sides are tasked with supporting the operations of the troops on the ground by completing designated missions.  The Entente on the offense has deeper objectives related to support of a general offense.  The Central Powers on the defense has shorter range operational objectives but must prevent Entente mission successes in order to win the day.

·         Each mission map is divided into three sectors, North (sector A), Middle (sector B), South (sector C).

·         Each sector has offensive mission objectives for Entente to complete to be successful.  The objectives are the same in all sectors (see chart later in this guide).

·         Each sector is trying to progress offensively through four sets of mission objectives.  Each set of sector objectives is considered in a “Phase”.   If Entente complete the first objectives (Phase 1), that sector progresses into the next set of offensive mission objectives (Phase 2).   And so on, through Phase 3 and Phase 4 for that sector.

·         Entente must achieve offensive success in Phase 4 in all three sectors for the offensive to be considered a success and win that weeks mission.  Entente winning 2 sectors is insufficient success for the offensive to be a success and results in a draw for the week.

·         Central is trying to prevent Entente from achieving success in enough sectors to prevent overall Entente offensive success.

See the Mission Objectives and Effects table below for complete Phase and Objectives details and win/draw/loss criteria.

Mission Objectives* and Effects

*Refer to the in-game mission description/information tab for specific related details/commands.

Entente Sector Objective

Entente Success Effect

Entente Failure Effect

Additional Effects/Notes

Phase 1

Destroy enemy Forward Observation Post

AND sector balloon AND

complete Recon* within 90 minutes.

Ground Offensive Begins in Sector.

Failure prevents attempt of Phase 2 and Phase 3 objectives and Phase 4 objectives completion necessary for winning the sector.

IF Entente has not completed recon within 90 mins, Entente HQ sends extra balloon observation unit to the sector to gather the intelligence needed to allow Entente to move to Phase 2.  However, Entente must successfully defend this balloon unit for 20 minutes for effect.

Phase 2

Complete Artillery Spot*

OR

Bomb Enemy Arty Battery

Friendly Artillery can attack enemy Artillery

At beginning of next Phase, four (4) Entente tanks begin moving toward enemy trenches with infantry.

Failure prevents attempt of Phase 3 objectives and Phase 4 objectives completion necessary for winning the sector.

Phase 3

Complete Infantry Contact (flares)*

OR

Trench Attack

AND

Entente tanks reach enemy trenches.

Friendly artillery can destroy the Central trenches.

Entente captures Central forward field. Front moves.

Failure prevents attempt of Phase 4 objectives completion necessary for winning the sector.

Central can destroy Entente Artillery in this phase and the next.  If successful, it delays Entente Infantry Contact mission completion 5 minutes.

Only when the task is accomplished through Infantry Contact Mission. Not when the trench is destroyed by planes.

Phase 4

Destroy Enemy supply train before reaching depot

OR

Destroy bridge before train has passed it,

AND Entente tank (1) reaches Central enemy trenches.

Entente success disrupting supply line results in Front moving and capturing enemy forward airfield.

Succeeding in both results in Entente winning the sector.

If supply train reaches its destination, Central front lines are reinforced and a ground counter attack succeeds in recapturing lost positions.  Entente progress is reversed back to start of Phase 3.

Mission Wins

Entente wins in 3 sectors results in Entente mission win.

Entente wins 2 sectors results in a mission draw.

Entente wins less than 2 sectors  results in Central mission win.

Announcing Black September V

image.png.58de40c8bb1b5362485b47045edc2ad4.png

Jasta 5 is pleased to be able to present the fifth installment of the campaign that focuses on the highly successful but last-ditch effort by the German Air Service to defend against Entente attacks during September 1918, resulting in the highest number of air casualties in any month of the entire war.

For a little history see - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_in_aviation#September and https://www.amazon.com/Black-September-1918-Darkest-Month/dp/1911621114

We welcome all pilots, new and experienced alike, to be a part of this event!

One year ago the Flying Circus community took off with Black September as the first ever Flying Circus campaign event, flown on the Kuban map. We are happy to be able to bring this year’s campaign with a new look on the Arras map, in collaboration with one of the best and well-known mission builders featured on the Flugpark Server, J99_Sizzlor.

*changed per announcement on 9/3 from 1600 start time to 1800 GMT/UTC start time (convert to your local time zone).

WHAT:

Entente forces attacking with Camels, Dolphins, Se5a, Spad XIII, Bristol F2bII and F2bIII to complete  photo reconnaissance, bombing, artillery spotting, infantry contact, trench attacks and supply disruption in support of the ground offensive.

Central forces defending with Albatros DVa, Pfalz DIII, Fokker DrI, Fokker DVII (limited DVIIf), Halberstadt CLII (limited  au).

WHERE:

Flying Circus Flugpark server hosted by Jasta 5 will be reconfigured on mission.  Both teams/sides will meet on the Flugpark Discord server at https://www.discord.gg/h8MRmyN  for mission assignments.

HOW:

Rules, scoring, and proper details published soon but no later than about August 29, one week prior to the commencement of hostilities.

Server Settings:

Full Real Settings

Death penalty: 15 minutes. If you can re-life, do so after 15 minute timeout. You should be able to fill backseat gunner positions during your death penalty.

Hi Baeumer, maybe you put the concept of the 15 min death penalty in your mission description. I was joining yesterday and had not much of an idea of this event besides stated mission objectives. I just saw it now. A collision later on, I found out about the penalty and it just made me leave. Normally I don‘t go as gunner as not everybody likes that and sometimes you just sit around for the other guy just to quit if there‘s no action.

I've got a couple questions. Does getting killed as a gunner start the 15 minute death timer? I know that if a pilot is killed, they must wait at least 15 minutes before they can fly again. I also know that they are able to hop into a gunner seat during that time. If they are killed while riding along as gunner, does the timer start again? Or is death as a gunner different than death as a pilot?

Is there going to be a password for the server during the next test or during the actual event to prevent random impolite strangers from hopping in a gunner seat and shooting down their own plane?

There is no death penalty for rear seat gunners.

When flying a two-seater it is best to lock your backseat. To enter a backseat get on comms with someone flying a two-seater and ask them if they want a live gunner and those that do can uock the seat long enough for you to get in.

Black September is a community building event.   We had great success last year introducing newer players to the sim and community through the campaign.   We are looking forward to doing the same this year.   We aren't sure whether we will need to be using a password this year or not.  Lock those backseats and open them when someone you know with a normal player name wants to get in and gun for you.

There was no password last year.

Are there limits on available airframes (recon, D.VIIF)? I am concerned about casual players hindering their side by wasting these :).

Every airframe is limited and has a 30min respawn timer. All special planes like recon, arty spotter and infantry flyer have a respawn time of 60 min.

This was not a problem last year, although I am sure wreckage due to inexperienced pilots was a problem to some degree in real life 1918.

What we can expect is that most if not all flight lines will be full at the beginning by registered pilots.    "Reserve pilots" might arrive as attrition occurs and creates openings along the front further into the operation.

Notice addressed to pilots assigned to the Central side, or to 'mercenaries' who intent to fly for the central side.

BLACK SEPTEMBER V is intended to be a community building event, something that all players seasoned and inexperienced should be feeling comfortable to join. This is why the Central side does not want to have complicated planning procedures or need for registration to various fora. On the other hand, this is an event and the Entente will not have any pity on us, thus we need to introduce a minimum degree of planing and coordination for the Central side.

It has been a fact that during the Peloponnesian War in ancient Greece (the Athenian alliance against the Spartan one), when one of the allies of Athens was in need, Athens would send an army or a fleet. When an ally of Sparta was in need, Sparta would send one man, a General. Following the Spartan example, we shall define who our commanders shall be and ask all pilots flying for the Central side to ask them on their assignment, during each session.

The Central side commander for BS V shall be either one of the pilots below who happen to be flying in a specific time.

J2_Drookasi

J5_Mueller

J5_Gameckock

J5_Loppnow

J5_Baeumer

The one of the above people who shall be acting as a commander for the Central side, for this specific mission, shall remain in the channel 'Central Briefing/HQ' of the Flugpark Discord server throughout the mission. He will be responsible for assigning pilots to specific sectors and for responding to developing situations.

So here is what each pilot needs to do:

a. If you have never done it before, join the Flugpark discord server and be sure that your headset is working.

b. Read the table in the first post to understand the campaign. If you do not understand it, do not mind, someone will help you do so when flying the mission.

c. On the Saturdays of 5, 12, 19 and 26 September, if you are not already assigned to the Central side (only Jastas 2, 5 and 99 are specifically assigned to it), consider joining the Entente side. They need more pilots than the Centrals!

d. If you only want to fly German, try to be in the above mentioned Discord Channel by 1530GMT, 30 mins before the mission starts. This gives some time to the commander to understand his resources, plan on how to play the mission and explain the plan to you.

e. The commander shall then assign 3 sector commanders, one for each North, Middle and South sectors and assign a number of pilots to each sector commander. The sector commander is responsible for planning on how to accomplish his tasks. Each sector is using a different channel for comms.

f. The mission starts at 1600 GMT and ends on 2000GMT. If you cannot come in the beginning, join any time you want, just remember to go to the 'Central Briefing/HQ' channel, ask the commander on what he wants you to do and do it. He will assign you to a sector, he will tell you who the sector commander is and if needed he will drop you in the respective channel.

Of course since this is an open event, not a password protected server, someone can just get in the server and play without any kind of coordination. While this is his prerogative, becoming part of a team adds to the feeling of contributing to the final mission objective and allows for better odds that we can win the campaign!

We shall not discuss tactics here for operations security reasons, the enemy is reading this. If you have questions or concerns on the above please ask here for clarifications.

Expressing my thanks to Jasta 5 for putting up this event and for running the Flugpark server, and to J99_Sizzlorr for the great missions he has built, I wish to all an enjoyable event.

I was thinking about copying Drookasi's post and edit it to fit Entente needs ;)

I hope to post on the Jasta 5 forum created for the Entente (Red Team), where the "sign up" document will be available.

I will sent the PM to you gents. Let's meet and discuss the tactics.

Probably the easiest thing to do, we're running out of time. and as long as someone is taking control.

This will be my first event, So lets win this thing damn it.

Dear Entente Pilots (the Red Team),

Please check the Jasta 5 forum. All the pilots who signed for the tournament as the Entente and have an account on the J5 forum, should get an access to the "Red Team Forum". I posted there a document where you can sign for the first match. It is very important to do so before Saturday, as this will allow better planning. Simply, we will know earlier, how many of you will fly and what are your plane preferences.

Please spend some time to get familiar with the tournament rules and with the test scenario which is generously hosted by Jasta 5 on their server.

I am sure, the plan and assignments will be ready before the Mission 1 and once you will be on discord before the game, you will learn what to do.

Good luck to both sides!

Suggestion: When asking for preference, put also a "Twoseater/Fighter" option, signaling that the pilot can fly both if needed, but prefers Twoseaters (as "Fighter/Twoseater" may represent that it may also fly both, but prefers Fighters). If marking only "Fighter" or "Twoseater" separatedly, then it is stating that it doesn't want to fly the other option.

After the end of mission 2, congratulations to all participants! Salute Entente, you got us sweating for 4 continuous hours!

Many intense fights and great performance by both sides. I read in the mission parser: 80 flight hours per side, a total of 172 planes shot down, and 111 ground targets destroyed.

A special welcome to the new pilots, I hope they enjoyed it. Please do not misinterpret our efforts to direct you to the Entente, we were just trying to create this numerical superiority that the  attacker should have over the defender. This is exactly the reason why the server is not password protected, to allow all to feel what an event is like and all are welcome.

J99_Sizzlorr for the mission design and J5 for offering the server, thank you!
