Do you have a grey square in the left upper corner?

How do i get rid of a large grey square in the seft upper conner of the screen?  It interferes whit my view and is distracting .  Also is there a way to keep the front dashboard active?  I have to keep the tab button pressed in order to use the dashboard.  cliffs of dover blitz
