Bought BoS to try IL-2 in VR for the first time. My head is outside the cockpit....

Hi, so I finally caved in the Steam summer sale to finally play IL-2 in VR on my Rift S, I got BoS. The last time I played IL-2 was in 2D in 2008.

I've got a few guides open and ready to optimise VR settings. This one, and also this one. But before I start changing any graphics settings I want to run the game in VR on default everything to see how it runs. I downloaded fpsVR to look at performance. I'm just using my mouse for now to get things configured before getting out my old X52 joystick and throttle.

First issue I have loading into a quick mission into an LaGG-3 - my head is outside the right side of the canopy and colliding with the roof the canopy. I'm off centre; little bit high, and very far to the right.

When I look around, the aircraft sort of moves with my head a little, it slides veryyy slowly where I look. From my seated position if I awkwardly move my head and chair to the correct position, the cockpit either jumps away from me or slides away that so I'm back where I started outside of it. In some cases the position does stick after moving my head and chair, but then I'm away from my desk at an awkward angle and distance.

How do I fix this?

I found a setting in Controls > Pilot head control > Pilot head snap position: center, but it does nothing when I press it.

I also see a setting in the same settings directory for Default VR view, which is unbound, what does this do?

I also found I can use home, pg up/down, end, del to move the head position, but that also does nothing.

edit:

I realised launching the game in 2D I can change head position with home, pg up/down, end, del.
I mapped Default VR view to Ctrl+5. Now when running in VR, and I press Ctrl+5, the view jumps to a centered position and immediately slides away back to my default state stuck high and to the right of the canopy...

move your head to where you want it to be and hit f10 to save that position as the default position.

My Two cents worth.....

The 5 key on the Number Pad should centre your view when using the Rift S.  Presume that this is a default setting as I did not map it to do that.

Need to press it when in flight.

I have not tried the f10 yet.

I pretty much only use the Default VR view hotkey and F10. Usually before flying a plane for the first time, after pressing Default VR view, I (physically) move to the position I find comfortable in relation to the cockpit, press F10, then sit normally in my chair and recenter the VR to that position with Default VR view.

Thanks. I also got a good response on reddit

"Start the game in 2D.

Set the centered head position to your desired position. Pressing Num5 usually does the trick if you don't mess with defaults, so maybe you need to undo your changes for this to work.

Press F10 to save this position as the default centered position. This works on a plane by plane basis, so if it's off in more than one plane repeat the process for each.

You should be all set, now the center VR should put you on that position.

I highly recommend unbinding the default F10 key because it will most likely fuck up your center and it's rarely used. Lots of people with TrackIR get into this situation because the controls overlap"

This is what worked for me^
