Easiest way to play coop with my brother

My brother and I (who live quite a long way apart) would love to play a few coop missions, just the two of us Vs the AI, campaign-style.

We play BoB only at the moment.

We've spent quite some time trawling the forums to try to figure out the easiest way to make this happen and are coming up short, can anyone offer a solution to our situation?

One of us could host a coop server, but then we need missions to play on it, we don't have any and it looks like the mission builder requires a serious up front time investment to learn it, are there any "off the shelf" missions, or better, a campaign-style mission builder? I think this is our best bet, but we need missions.

We could join a squadron and join in with any number of excellent organised and hosted coop events, but this requires us to be able to schedule our play time when the events happen, which is unlikely, besides, we'd like to just jump on and play for an hour whenever we want.

We could join an empty dogfight server, which is what we've been doing, but there seem to be no mission "objectives" save what we make up. This is fine for now, but we'd like some enemy AI planes to fight, we're far too bad to try our hand against real pilots yet!

Any ideas are gratefully received.

Check out Pat Wilson's Campaign Generator. All of the coop I've played has been with that program , it's highly customizable in terms of mission generation and numbers of planes in the sky.

Hi Chris:salute:.  First of all;  have you or your brother forwarded your ports on your router to enable you to host a coop?   This is usually the first and biggest hurdle to overcome.

If you have not, have a quick look through this as it might help

http://dangerdogz.com/forums/topic/13140-port-forwarding/

As others have said above; Initially, I would definitely recommend using this over PWCG.

It's very simple to use and will produce a coop mission that you can host on your machine.

Many thanks, all.

I think I'll give SYN_Vander's mission builder a go in the first instance and see how we get on.

Is there anything I need to watch out for having only the BoB game? If I put Yaks in it, for example, is it going to fail to work for us?

Again, many thanks for pointing us in the right direction!

This mission generator has a Map selector.

So, as long as you got 'Rhineland' selected, and 'Historical planes' checked, it's all good ... Except maybe any of the Collector planes, or the ones in the 'Premium' version ...

You can select any plane as a.i. opposition but only select as flyable the planes you own.   Good luck!?

Me, my brother and friends are on our own coop server and we regularly fly mission generated with Easy Mission Generator . Plenty of fun every time! Really a Great piece of software for beginners and not so regular players. Extremely user friendly !

Give it a try, trust me!

happy flying

On Saturday I tried to host a Syn Vander coop mission using my own computer as the server, but when my buddy joined the server and the mission started to download, he kept seeing server timeouts or messages along the lines of server lost (I didn't write down the specific error messages he told me over Teamspeak).

I allow Il-2 through my firewall, both private and public.

Does this port forwarding setup in my Arris NVG599 router look right?

According to Speedtest.net I get about 60 Mbps both upload and download speed.

Maybe my machine and/or AT&T Uverse are not capable of me both hosting and flying the mission at the same time?

You need to open 28000 TCP/UDP, ánd 28100 TCP.

So, basically, you need two lines.

Change host port to 28000 in the current line, and add 28100-28100 TCP 28100 and it should be good!

The difference between PWCG and Vander's mission generator is a career mode.  PWCG lets you and others take on personas within the scope of a historical career.  You can even fly for opposite sides.  If that interests you then give it a look.  If you just want to fly some missions then Vander's mission generator might be just the thing.  While both generate missions they do so in different contexts.

Ooh, that looks really interesting to me; I really like career mode in real time. Just being a pilot, getting sent to shoot something, and hopefully coming home again to do it all again tomorrow.

We're up and running now, port forwarding took longer than expected, but IL-2 is much more fun with others.

Now, to tune the graphics for an Oculus Quest...

Thanks very much, DD_FT.  I tried what you suggested, and also made sure my firewall allows ports 28000 and 28100 through, but my buddy still gets the Unable to connect to game server #10019 error message. Maybe I need to serve the coop mission from a different machine than my own gaming machine.

Hi chris_uk_83 , I'm in Los Angeles and also have an Oculus Quest, if you ever want to get on Teamspeak or Discord and would let me join your coop mission I see you are able to get running :salute:

Charlo your internet speeds are around the same as mine but your pc is slightly better than mine and I have no problems hosting and flying from the same pc.

I think you've still got a port-forwarding problem.

Good luck:salute:

Thanks, Arthur - maybe it's something on my buddy's machine, which I helped him build a few years ago - ah well, this hobby of ours constantly challenges and furthers our technical skills ?

It would be interesting to know the games giving error code, like #10072.

However for testing sake i suggest to turn off firewall and antivirus to get it running at first.

After beeing successful you set he restiction one after the other to high again.

Is your buddy maybe behind a complete restricted system?Like Firewall raised completely?

Doublecheck

- Software Firewall down,

- Router Firewall down, if it has

- ports 28000 & 28100 open and routed to same ingoing/outgoing ports

- noting error code

Thank you, Nephris - I provide all the tech support for my buddy, so when he gets back from his trip I will remote support his machine and set his ports and router settings to see if that allows us to coop together :salute:
