lantern53 Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 Is there any runway info on these bases? I'd like to know how long the runways are, which have services, like where can I get a donut or a $100 hamburger... 1
PatrickAWlson Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 Not easy if you want information on all of them but you can use the measuring tool on the ME.

Very sad, I really enjoy a good hamburger, however $100, that would be in Reichsmark 10000000000000000000000000000 RM, or something like that.
Heckpupper Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 To be honest, having RW lenghts, RW headings and ASL data for airbases is quite necessary at least for night flying missions. Wish they were included somewhere in-game. 1

I have a 20 million DM note from the Weimar Republic days. Too bad I couldn't cash it back in the day when the exchange rate was 2 DM to $1

I agree that it would be nice to have, but for a typical 1GCCFP or 1GCCBP it's not essential. I've yet to encounter a SP career where the night ambient light conditions and/or cloud cover make it terribly difficult finding home plate. The airfield elevation data is a bit problematic in game, in that the local altimeter is an accurate QFE (zero height whilst on the ground) setting typically only at home plate. If you divert, the QFE can be terribly in error. I'm currently testing a historically based Dec 1944 project (A-20 night interdiction of railroads, airfields, river traffic) being built by @Gambit21. Unless he has a change of heart, there will be an alternate version with very low ceilings (with snow) at Florennes in the middle of the night. My hope is that in the alternate version you will need to be fairly proficient in flying an NDB approach to Florennes' Runway 16. Edited June 16, 2020 by busdriver 1

So, if you know you are closer to the alternate field than you are from home base (or any other friendly field), you can re-select QFE on your altimeter and it will change to your height above the alternate field. However, I'm not sure what happens with air starts. Edited June 17, 2020 by JimTM

I've found you can easily fly to another logical alternate (empty for the mission or career, but historically active) and the QFE will put you below zero. In my experience it's more problematic on the Rhine or Kuban maps. It is a quirk with no easy answer. Not unlike the quirk of NDBs missing from otherwise historically active airfields that are abandoned in a SP career. But I digress...

I think next build I paste in that re-spawn group I was talking about, make sure that works...then it's low deck time.

BTW, I missed your question in the old thread so I answered it here.

Merzbrück has 500m of Asphalt Runway which is counted as mixed, because the Grass around it counts as well (Gliders) but in reality the Grass only extends it by like 50m and then there is a Cycle Path followed by Fields. Well, the Guy read 1500' in his Map and assumed, because 1500ft is really, really short for the main Airfield of a Major German City, that it must have been 1500 Metres. He also knew that we have some T-6 Texans operating from here, which are fast Aircraft. He did have some doubts when he did have look on the Downwind, but didn't want to divert to the NATO-E3A-AWACs base in Geilenkirchen (my Civilian Home Airfield) and so just proceeded to Approach and made the Landing Stick, at least for the first 500m. Because it had rained, he wasn't done Landing at that Point just yet though, proceeded to Land through the Wet Grass and into the Field behind that where he got finally stopped. Managed not to break the Front Wheel (bent it beyond Airworthyness though). Lesson Learned: Believe your Maps, German Fields can be very short, even in Major Cities. Glider Guys are really nice and will give you a Push at the Cost of Beer for all. Merzbrück is Challenging even in STOL capable Planes T-6 Texans are surprisingly enough, absolutely STOL capable, despite their Size and Speed. 1

A Turbo Arrow is anything but fast Additional turmoil is added by that /%&$%§% railway embankment on one side and the Autobahn on the other side... Have they meanwhile disposed of that bent Yak-9 in Merzbrück?

The Railway embankment has become worse, now that it is active again, and Planes have to time their Landing trying not to skim off Parts on passing Trains.
