I wouldn’t mind another Jedi Knight game.

Seriously, why so few Star Wars games? As if there’s no built-in market...

Brings back good Lucasarts memories from 30 years ago. I´ll have a look for sure.

I am not so sure:

XWing for instance was sometimes uselessly difficult, a little like some "point and click" : if at the begining of the mission you go right you win, if you go left, you loose with no clue on this.

Now we do not want this anymore : we want something "punitive" : you lost because you made mistakes, not because you made a choice you had no clue it would be bad !

The dogfights against fighters are outdated with a miserable AI (though not much worse than what was available for flight sim at this time)

Remember that Shuttles were more deadly than Tie Fighters !

The fighters are very slow (see the video posted above on XWA), they do not fly like in the movies.

ww2 flight models would fit better to what we see in the movies : Jason what about Battle Of Death Star ? ?

I like Star Wars (well at least the first 3), but I ma not a big fan of the science or lack there of. The physics is off. I would be interested more like a Star Trek, bu the physics is basic and tends to resort with we already know and what we are familiar with on Earth. Fighting in space is more akin to going up in hot air balloons and shooting at each other. That actually sounds like a real kick in pants to me, but suspect not to a lot of people.

If you like a cheap spacesim with true Newtonian physics you might check out 'Astrokill' on steam.

Unfortunately it may have been abandoned since 2019.

It has great visuals and 'true' physics.

IMHO It is quite hard to get used to such physics when coming from IL-2, DCS and Star Wars sims/games though.

It always gets me frustrated and then I wipe it from the SSD (over and over again).

Science is always great, but is it always ... fun !??

Bring back Kyle Katarn in games like, Dark Forces, Dark Forces II, Mysteries of the Sith, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy... I played them all to death!

Yep, me too, still have most of the duel saber, saber colours and character mods some where.

Like a lot of you, I've been waiting for a new XWing / Tie Fighter sim since the originals. This maybe it, but we will have to see. Looks better than I was expecting, I'm so glad not to see a third person arcade style game. Now please please have Trackir support

Does anyone know if you can respawn once a mission starts?

Still can't see what the actual laws of physics are. it does appear the ship had to slow down in order to 180, so they must be some sort of "law" to govern ships movements.

Hera’s back!

I’m a lot more excited about the New Republic campaign if we get to fly alongside the Ghost. Especially if we get a Rex cameo.

Also, having Chopper as an astromech would be awesome.

Hm... Although it still doesn't look close enough to X-Wing / TIE Fighter remake, it appears to be worth a look nevertheless.

Looks quite scripted and confined.

A lot like "Eve Valkyrie : Warzone" in a Star Wars world.

Eve also has trackir and tobi support, hardware that, Afaik has never been supported in any EA game!

Looking at the visuals it becomes clear to me why the required Hardware specs are low ... cartoonish environment and 'cockpit' look.

But at least people probably won't need to get a 3090 Titan to play this in VR !

As expected this is an Arcade title .. perfect for the EA target-audience.

Back to IL-2 for me... Unscripted, true-to-life, real cockpits.

I do intend to check this new EA title out anyway, but... Not expecting the world and... not to get disappointed.

Chopper sure is a character isn't he. ?

It's great the new Squadrons title has VR.

I'm hoping EA have no time constraints in game play & missions. The graphics appear quite good.

I know it's a trailer and hence has to be ridiculously overdone but there seems to be a stupidly large amount of explosions. And what's with the streamers coming off the wingtips? What's that all about?! Not too excited about this one now.

Having played X-Wing and TIE Fighter to death back then, this new title is of a certain interest to me, but I remain sceptic though. I would much prefer a campaign based SP game instead of a MP orientated one. But let's wait and see.

Thanks for posting the enhancement patch for X-Wing Alliance on the first page. Bought XWA on Steam two days ago and applied the patch. I'm having a total blast since then and fighting the Empire and the Viraxxos like a maniac. So many good memories. such an fantastic game. I always considered XWA the pinnacle and legacy of the X-Wing series.

I had the patch for alliance a while back but just installed the other components to it to make it more modern, like the cockpits etc. Does anyone know how to get the head tracking to work on it though?

There is an extra file You need to install after the 1.6 patch.

It is located in the download section somewhere below the main patch. Before the installation process You have different options whether You want to use Track IR, VR or no device.

I found that and went through the process and selected trackir but was wondering if there was a way to activate it as it wasn’t working. Ivr got track hat or one of the other ones so not quite trackir - that would t be the issue?

Not sure about other head tracking devices. I plugged my old track ir in just for XWA and it worked right from the start. Have not tried VR though.

I've seen that there is an forum over there. Maybe the folks on the forum can help You out?

yes it is. straight forward process.

I might get it, they had me at coop vs AI, that suits me as usually these big games attract a toxic MP base. I can't be bothered with all that anymore.

The boost and side-slip is a big difference from the old X-wing games...

I seriously doubt that Tie Fighters will be the hyper-maneuverable Zero inspired glass cannons they were in Tie Fighter... which would be a side regression towards the mean!

But my main concern would be that the auto-aim would make leading a target meaningless...

(So maybe this will be as good as Rogue Squadron?)

In an interview they confirmed that TIE fighters will lack shields while boosting more power that can be directed to the engine and to the RoF of the guns

Also confirmed that there is no auto aim and no leading cross hair to help you in that (crosshair was just turned off for the video)

Leading of what? Lasers are "light." right? There is no air, so no friction.

Ever seen a Star Wars movie? Lasers fly almost as slow as bullets ;)

in the old x-wing games you had to lead the targets as well

Really? That is exciting (I thought I observed auto-aiming in the trailer). I don't mind it if it can be turned off.

As for Tie Fighters... they've been modelled without shields before (e.g. one of the Battlefronts if I recall) - but they still took more than two hits... which was all you got for an entire mission in the classic Tie Fighter (3 hits for a Tie Interceptor, I think 5 for a Tie Bomber? Those were the days, eh?! ? ). I'm going to try to keep from getting my hopes up... but your are stoking them!

Hopefully this new Star Wars game will allow fully unrestrained movement in yaw, roll and pitch axis, in conjunction with real (albeit understandably simplified for gameplay reasons) newtonian physics.

The trailer looks promising in this regard: there seems to be real inertia to the way each ship moves, even a nimble interceptor such as A-Wing.

This will undoubtedly help in mitigating the infamous "chaotic twitchfest" feeling of previous Star Wars games, where you cannot plan your next move because of the squirrely and unpredictable way ships move. With gameplay like that there is too much randomness and too little control, which makes the entire experience shallow and forgettable.

But even if the new Star Wars gameplay is implemented well it will still be a far cry from an atmospheric flight-model, with its innately satisfying feeling of control, where you anticipate and react to your opponent's moves intuitively, because it is all grounded in well-understood physical limitations of the environment as well as the planes themselves.

Posters are concerned about the FM. I, PERSONALLY, am much more concerned about the limited game modes! Afaik, no mission editor, no custom matches (were we could set up our own battles for our friends/squadron). Not many AI entities etc.

Eve Valkyrie : warzone had most of these features though and was quite similar in concept... except for that unique 'star wars' setting of course! I hope I am very wrong about this, but if SW:Squadrons turns out to be a scripted, limited mp oriented game it can hold only my attention for a few days... at most!? I hope YMMV ?

They do that with every movie for the benefit of the audience.

How many times do we hear Glocks being cocked? The audience demands the noise so the movies put it in.

Im getting excited, the inner TIE Fighter pilot has been waiting along time for this. I will find it very hard to get into it if I cant use Trackir. Having your head stuck in a forward position would be frustrating.

Interesting in depth interview with Dev. Here is an extract about Trackir:

Talk to me about my peripherals. First of all, is my Track IR going to work?

So I’m pretty limited in what I can say there. What’s on our website is what I’m allowed to say. We will support HOTAS [hands-on throttle and stick] and traditional joysticks — non-throttle joysticks as well — on PC. I cannot say yet whether or not we will have that on console. I cannot say yet the specific hardware we will or won’t support. All that’s going to be coming later, so keep your eyes peeled. But I can say at the bare minimum that we will support HOTAS on PC.

Fingers crossed, fingers crossed

The more I see the more I like.

SP Campaign, MP, Co-Op.

And built from the ground up with VR support as well.

Official Gameplay Trailer.

Edit: Removed as it has already been posted earlier in the thread, duh.

This is going to provide yet another big boost to the VR Tech Industry.

If there is no trackIR  I'm not sure I can be bothered with it... we are in 2020 now not the bloody stone age!

If they can mod it into XWA there is no reason why it should not be in this title.

HOTAS and VR will make it interesting although gameplay may be too arcade.

Definitely will keep an eye on it.

1st I'm pretty sure I could use my ED Tracker with vanilla XWA

2nd I fear Track IR is even more niche than VR. Not in the Flightsim market but in the games market at which this product is aimed.

But I believe if VR is implemented TIR shouldn't be that hard - I hope it will be as the more periphery i supported the more people can fully enjoy the game.

But to be honest - for rebel ships TIR would be very sensible as in any WWII a/c. But for TIEs VR is only cool for the 3D effect - on a Screen TIR will be completely useless gameplay wise ^^
