Please don't overwrite the quick missions

Dear developers, thanks a lot for your great work. I use a highly customized set of QMB missions for my gunnery warmup before joining online. The last dozen or so updates and hotfixes have overwritten those missions each and every time. Having to reconfigure them every time is very frustrating.

Is there a way to update the game without overwriting the QMB missions, or is there a workaround on the client side?

Missions are saved with tracks when you record a flight. It should be possible to transfer the mission file and its associated localizations to the mission folder, and run it as a mission from the game. Might require opening in the editor and changing the mission type to single player.

Stupid Q of course: How do you do that, record a flight?

Damn. Got two updates since yesterday, and both overwrote the QMB.

Of course the latest update overwrote the quick missions again. Guys, can you stop this? It's really annoying to find an I-16 in a completely bogus quick mission after every single game update, i.e. every week. Why do you model user-configurable quick missions which you overwrite every week? There must be a better way.

I don't understand what you mean by "overwrote the quick missions". Do you mean overwrote the settings in the QMB screen or do you mean that you saved a quick mission somewhere and it was overwritten?

You can save the current mission that you just flew in the QMB and re-fly it later.

Do the following:

1. Open the mission editor (STEditor.exe in your game \bin\editor folder).

2. In the File menu, click Open and select _gen.mission, which is in your game folder under \data\Missions.
Note: _gen.mission is the latest mission that you played.
3. In the "Mission Tree" pane on the left side, select the item at the top
    The Mission Properties dialog appears

4. In the Name box, specify a new name for the mission.

5. In Mission Type, select Single.
6. In the File menu, click Save As and save the mission with a new name under the /data/Missions folder.

Because a mission consists of several files, it's a good idea to create a subfolder under /data/Missions with the name of the mission.

This is what happens, and below is your great solution!

Exactly that's what is happening on each game update, hotfix etc.

Thanks for the workaround. There should be no need for such workaround, though. The beauty of the QMB is that I have my general setup involving 13 planes, and I can very quickly alter the scenario without needing the full mission builder. Developers could just as well overwrite all our game settings and key bindings, and there are workarounds for that. A well designed product makes things easier for the customer, not more cumbersome.

Hooray, another hotfix today, and all quick missions were overwritten!

And yet another hotfix, and the quick missions are gone again and a battered old I-16 waits for me ?

@JimTM I tried the workaround you suggested, but to no avail. I created a folder for the mission under data\missions, and saved the newly created mission in it. When I try to load the mission from the single mission menu, I only see the folder, but it does not open. I must be missing something. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry, my mistake. I added step 5 to the procedure above. This time only, you need to first delete file mtreecache.eng from your game /data folder before starting IL-2. The file is regenerated when you start IL-2.

I think what is being referred to is the way that every update resets the aircraft selection drop downs in the QMB. For allied WWII scenario this is the I-16.

No way to prevent it that I'm aware of if that's the case.

Would it be possible to store settings from the last QMB as a mod and activate the same quick mission settings through JSME before playing.

Let s say that i have a specific settings i like with 4 hurricane, 3 yak1, 4 bf109 and 3 mc202, all with specific config and skins. Is it something i can save and restore for later by copying all the _gen files under mission folder?

Does it store as well the weather/time settings and ground targets settings?

Alternating between this mission and other ones with more different set of planes, would be fantastic and real time saver instead of going through many menus to find and configure 4 different types of planes.

As an alternative to copy through mission editor and access missions from missions folder. So that change of map and time is still easy to perform for the same set of planes.

Thank you very much in advance,

Y.
