Interesting video about the activity of the LW in the days around D-Day.

Or Jochen Prien's "Jagdfliegerverbände" vols 13/III thru 13/V if you're fluent in German.

Yes absulutely. You can´t get more details than in his books. Order them from him directly because very often those books have absurd prices at online resellers.

I had no idea they'd stuff a person inside the fuselage of the fw190 for transport purposes...  ?

Yeah, they'd take up to three or four mechanics from the Courland pocket to Jutland or Sweden that way. One or two in the trunk and another one or two in the cockpit.

Desperation will make people fit the tiniest holes.

The hatch was also used a lot by PK cameramen to do aerial shots:

2nd person should be included in load out in Il2 and payload wizard in Anton module in DCS . Jus sayin.

Excellent YouTube.

There are books which have diagrams showing how to transport people in the tail, and If I recall correctly the 109 could carry 3 people in its tail, but not in the most comfortable position, of course. This was also a common practice apparently when the Axis fell back from the North of Africa.

I can only imagine the horror of being trapped in that tail with 2 other people when the aircraft got jumped by Allied fighters, not seeing what's going on..

Basically meat armor at that point.

Agreed...

I can hardly imagine what those poor chaps must have felt when they realized things took a wrong turn, trapped inside such a tiny and dark space, not being able to escape. The horror.

Transporting additional personal in the fuselage of fighter planes seemed to have been a common tactic among other air forces as well. I've once read about a Soviet pilot (forgot his name, sorry) who lost his life while trying to emergency land his plane (think it was a Yak type...) after a technical problem. He was ordered to bail out, but refused to do so, because he was transporting a member of his ground crew in the fuselage. Unfortunately the landing attempt failed and both were killed.

I bet somebody on here can give a more detailed insight of this tragic event.

I have never read of the RAF or USAAF doing this as a transportation procedure. Transports or ‘Hacks’ to spare? More bomber assets to do this?

I have read a similar story - possibly even the same one.

The pilot was then decorated for his bravery in not bailing out and abandonning the poor mechanic.

Pilot was Maurice de Seynes from the Normandie-Niemen squadron, and mechanic was Vladimir Bielozoud.

I think transports to spare is the answer.  The USAAF never suffered from the sort of material shortages that the LW sometimes did.  What is interesting is thatthey did use Ju52s for transport ... but now you have Ju52s flying in an area inhabited by Mustangs and Spitfires.  Not sure that falling to my death in the back of a Ju52 is much better than falling to my death in the back of an FW190.

Yes, he's a buddy of @ACG_DerSheriff if I remember correctly. Sadly I don't know his current Il-2 name but Sheriff can help you with this hopefully.
