chiliwili69 Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 (edited) A frequent topic that it is discussed in several threads is how many people who plays IL-2 prefer to do it in VR. In Jan-2020 I created a poll (in the polls section) to know why people is not in VR and also to know how many is in VR: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/57455-why-you-are-still-not-in-vr-in-2020/ So far, 289 people participated and 101 of them prefer IL-2 in VR. So it is 35%. For me it seems a lot. I think the real portion will be much smaller. The poll was targeted for non-VR and VR people, so I believe that they participated equally. I don´t know if the sample is biased for some reason for people who play VR. Of course, there is many people who play IL-2 and it is not in the forum and they didn´t voted. And I think that a bigger portion of the IL-2 VR users are in the forum since they look for advice or comment issues. I really don´t know how many people play IL-2, maybe in the order of 10.000 or more. In any case, 289 votes is a small sample compared to the active IL-2 simmers but statiscally is big enough to give a rough estimate of the portion of people who prefers IL-2 in VR. But again I think it seems too large. I believe that the real number would be around 10%. We got another number from the poll "Which VR headset?" from Jan-2020 which is in the VR forum subsection: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/57456-which-vr-device-do-you-use-jan-2020-poll/ Here 215 people participated, all of them VR headset owners. This is more than double the 101 votes of the another poll. And we had another older one from March-2019: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/43590-which-vr-headset/ There 117 people voted. What it is clear is that it is a growing number, and that´s good for IL-2 in general. Edited June 4, 2020 by chiliwili69 1

Combat Box gets over 4,000 players per month, so there are at least 4,000 active multiplayer pilots. Steam Spy says between 200k and 500k owners of IL2 Battle of Stalingrad, with peak concurrent players of about 500 yesterday. But yeah, I agree that the poll number -- 35% of pilots identified as playing in VR -- is likely too high overall. But it might be right for "active multiplayer pilots" -- after all, most of us are here to have fun and VR adds a lot of immersion and adrenaline to flying, so it could be that quite a lot of competitive multiplayer pilots are using VR.
dburne Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 (edited) Yeah the Devs I am sure have a good idea, and it must be at least enough for them to maintain VR support as well as continually improving it. No way that poll would be anywhere near accurate. But you can tell just from the activity and more members posting in VR about VR that it is growing for sure. Edited June 4, 2020 by dburne

I don´t know if the Combat Box server (and any server in general) can retrieve also the information about if the player is using VR or not, just only for statistical purposes. In the other hand Steam has they own VR statistics, and they say that around 2% of the users during the past month had VR. That includes all kind of games. Perhaps, in the sim community this number is higher, so all we could say that it is between 2% and 35%.
simfan2015 Posted June 5, 2020 Posted June 5, 2020 (edited) SteamVR ... still less than 2%. Of course sim users generally are older, are more dedicated etc so the VR percentage in this case is indeed (most probably) far higher. VR users are very vocal though : NO VR NO BUY ... When I read the forums for various AAA titles (sim or not) I have the impression though that Devs are very reluctant to promise both VR as well as no VR, even for future AAA titles. They too know the true % of users. Examples (maybe not really AAA titles) ... Everspace 2, UBOAT, Doom Eternal ... I personally believe VR users should therefore be grateful IL-2 GB as well as DCS do offer VR ! Also, I personally use 4K 43 inch+ monitors/TVs to enjoy sims but am willing to believe even those are no substitute for true VR ... at all. Edited June 5, 2020 by simfan2015
HunDread Posted June 5, 2020 Posted June 5, 2020 Is steam statistics automatic? Because I use steam but don't use it for VR. I don't have SteamVR installed. For steam, I am not a VR user.
=RS=haikcube Posted June 5, 2020 Posted June 5, 2020 (edited) Steam prompts the user every now and again asking to opt into a survey, i believe its once every month. Should the user accept the survey, information of hardware that is currently connected and detected such as cpu/gpu/monitors are collected. As the hardware has to be plugged in and running, the number of vr users on steam that opted into the survey might actually be a bit higher as not everyone has it on and running during the survey. Edit---Oh, steam modified the survey to recognize if a headset was plugged in during the polling month. Edited June 5, 2020 by [=PzG=]-haikcube typos
von_Tom Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 You can almost sense the take up of VR by the change in online flying - there are more instances where I have been able to sneak up on people now, whereas before it was a case of get to 400m behind and just below their 6 and they'd start manoeuvring because they had TIR. Or I got lucky because I am rarely on public servers. von Tom
