Completed a Tamiya 1/48 Mosquito FB. VI with Aires resin cockpit and figures from ICM and Eduard, in anticipation of the Mossie being added to a few sims some time soon!

And some pictures of the pilot/navigator/dog and also the cockpit detail.

This is the thread where I always run out of reactions.

My kids are doing their first kit all by themselves. I did the last couple of models with them, but now they were confident doing it all by themselves. I found it is actually more dificult leaving them all alone instaed of helping them. But if you get kicked out of the shop, that helps.

 

It is the new Revell 109F2 in 1/72, an absolutely great kit. If it was a tad more detailed, it could almost be a Tamiya kit. Almost perfect fit, with many parts prceise enough that you can snap them together and they "click" once they match. Sometimes, the fit is a bit tight that when they were generous with colors, then it requires a bit of force to snap them together. That is when they would show up and bring the thing, having you you press untill it "clicks" and off they go again. Regarding the livery, They didn't use the enclosed one, but were inspired by some liveries in this game. The younger one has finished already and went for the white livery and the older went for Jochen Marseilles F4 livery. I made him some decals for that as it is a specific plane and not a generic white one.

 

I'll post when both are finished. But the iPad is tough competition for investing time...

That Mossie!  So beautiful, and the invasion stripes look fantastic.

 

Made a start on the Supermarine S.5.  Quite incredible to think that this is a 1927 design. Have been working on getting the main assemblies correct.  No easy thing as its a very tricky shape.

It is just jaw dropping how you get these plastic pieces in shape like that. I can somehow (intellectually) reproduce the first three steps, as I did build RC planes from scratch back in the elder days, but the precision how you merge the plan to the last step is just amazing. Unless guided by a bulkhead along the spars I always had such a hard time getting the shape along the fuselage beyond an "artistic interpretation" of the plan. Just wow.

Holidays are convenient in following up the important stuff.

 

First, my dear Märklin Junkers F13, H0 scale. (1/87).

 

 

Alas, being a display kit for the last 30 years, oarts are subtyl bent. This especially tragic as the plastic is rather solid. Will beinteresting fitting the fuselage.

 

 

At last wings fit together somewhat. the empanage was an ok fit.

 

 

Painting time for the kids.

 

 

After the younger of the two painted innards, time for some airbrushing. I sprayed the whole outer parts aluminum that I lightened with white. I find colors on real sized aircraft usuall come across a tad lighter than on miniature models.

 

 

Now the black parts. Even though I have a new airbrush pistol (man, that was worth the 150 bucks!) I am still very generous in masking.

 

 

Worked better than anticipated. (Note to self: don't save on cheap Chinese airbrush!)

 

 

I found that there are wooden beams on the wings where the cabin entry is. That again needs slots of tape.

 

 

Not straight but good enough for my purpose.

 

 

So, that's it. Now the stickers.

 

 

Argh... they are all dried up and turned yellow. I have to really cut then next to the fonts. the white ones tend to desintegrate as they are cracked in little parts on the paper.  But at least I managed to put them on.

 

 

Choo-choo! My sister's old Märklin has a new train. That landcape is gonna grow if this situation keeps on going...

 

 

Next. The Revell Bf-109F2, 1/72.

 

The kids wanted to build one all by themselves. Fine.

 

 

The kit is absolutely great. A new mold, perfect parts, perfect fit. I almost envied them. First step, paint on the sprue. they went along with suggested coloring but then came to me to show liveries as present in IL-2. The younger chose a white livery and the older chose Jochen Marseilles F4 livery.

 

Surprise. So far I never deviated from suggested coloring, ever. But be it.

 

 

I suggested to tape the pitot for obvious reasons. This is the youngers model.

 

 

Then fitting the fuselage parts...

 

 

Some glue and joining the halves.

 

 

He made it. It is impressive how solid the parts fit and how straight they end up in place. The parts have hooks to click them into place.

It's nice to see that progress each time I drop in. Otherwhise they kicked me out.

 

 

I had to help with placing the landing gear. They were a tight but solid fit.

 

 

Decals on the first one plus the finish now on. I put on the tiny decals. The decals are really nice and easy to place. Even for first-timers.

 

 

Marseille had this badge on the cowling. It needed a white color underneath as I had to prin the decals myself and my laser printer cannot print white. But I had him use a hole-puncher on masking tape and scaled the badge to make it fit. Worked like a charm.

 

 

Yellow is a problem on self printed decals if the base is not white. But be it.

 

 

Both finished. On both I did the small decals and the satin cote finish, as it is enamel based. But that's it.

 

Still, there's been plenty of consolating the kids if things didn‘t go immediately as planned. But no errors made they couldn't fix.

After having silently admired everyone's skills and craftmansship and most important: spirit, motivation and patience in this thread, i gave myself a kick to do my first model after being a ten year old....i admit, challenge was tough but it was so much fun, all the memories of the childhood days, that came up during the build made me smile...1:72 is hard to see for me but a additional reading glass from the drugstore did it then. I am happy with my very first attempt of a Revell Spitfire Mk II. ?

Well that`s this project done.... It`s hard to photograph as its nearly 2 feet long ?. And i can fit it in my display cabinet... in two parts lol.. i`m looking at buying another display cabinet now as iv`e 100% filled 2 now.  Well i`m going to build a plane next as i have been doing armour for 2 years now.

 

 

I Will be also adding a driver to this ....

Was down with a cold for a few days, still not feeling completely fine but at least I can get out of bed. So I started the decals on my Ta 152 C and ... Oh boy. The Hobby Boss decals are utter shyte. They're way too thick and the film needs tons of softener to conform to the surface (even more so with the rivets I placed). Apart from that the maintenance decals are rudimentary at best (no fuel/MW 50 triangles at all) and wrong in places (no step demarcation lines are either missing entirely or too long/short). I  raided the remaining Academy Ta 183 decals for replacements (fuselage Balkenkreuz and number, underwing Balkenkreuz) since they're way better.

not to derail the thread or deliberately mis-interpret compliments about other people's work but ...

 

... so much better to have museum projects in museums. I have a few too many museum projects about my home/workshop that would be better out of my way such that the money was in my account such that I could dispatch the work to the clients.

If they are too thick i just bin most of them ( save nose art etc) and go after market for the rest , unless i can use some out of the spares box. I have a lot of spare decals.

I thought about it, but decided against it. I didn't want to drag this build out until all eternity, because I had some resources left from the Academy Ta 183 so I could plunder that. I'd have loved to add more maintenance markings, mind you, but searching for a good quality set and then shelling out money (more if you include shipping etc)? 

 

In the end it's kind of a "minimalistic look" that befits a very late war "What if" aircraft, me thinks.

Still looks great how it comes along. I really like the way you airbrushed it. The tedious work doing the marbeling really paid off. I find this technique to be really difficult to make, as in the end the color variation you achive is more like a purely optical bump map to sheet metal not making a perfect surface between the ribs. It gives the impression of a 3D structure, where the mould does not have it. It is easily overdone. This looks gorgeous.

I'm always impressed by the level of detail that you are able to implement at such a small scale. Then I remember that it's also scratch built and my mind just can't handle it.

Decals and clear coats done, I added panel line washes from Ammo (I like the subtlety they do as compared to my earlier attempts with dark oil colours), sealed everything with a flat coat and now I'm trying to simulate the tiny scratches any operational warplane gets over time.
