Feathered_IV Posted September 21, 2018 Posted September 21, 2018 Cybermat, who makes that little 1/700 U-boat? I bought some Royal Navy destroyers recently for a change of pace and I'd love to have a sub or two to go with them.

They’ve done the VII-B, VII-C, IX-B, and IX-C u-boats in 1/700. You can also get I-400 class, Balao class, and two versions of the Gato class submarines in the same scale, as well as a load of modern ships and subs. As a matter of fact I’m making the Balao at the moment. http://www.hobbyboss.com/index.php?m=Product&a=index&p=1&id=166&l=en I wouldn’t mind making some Royal Navy destroyers myself. Might look for an N-class to make a model of HMAS Norman, my Pa’s ship. Edited September 21, 2018 by Pb_Cybermat47 1
Feathered_IV Posted September 21, 2018 Posted September 21, 2018 Ah thanks! I'd been eyeing off the Flyhawk ones, so I'm curious now which kits will suit me best. Looks like I've got some research to do.
voncrapenhauser Posted September 23, 2018 Author Posted September 23, 2018 (edited) Nice figures there Carts great airbrushing on the T Rex and aliens. Cool Musketeer Salle. Excellent Pilot Pipa I have still got a few 1/6th scale figures in storage too. I suppose I should pull my finger out and build some more on my E type. Been too busy working on my 1/1 scale Mazda 6 TS2 getting it ready for paint. Edited September 23, 2018 by voncrapenhauser Added text. 1
Cybermat47 Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 HobbyBoss 1/700 USS Balao (SS-285). This was a very quick but enjoyable build. 1
voncrapenhauser Posted October 1, 2018 Author Posted October 1, 2018 (edited) Nice one Barron. E Type Update, more interior and fuel cap corrections. Edited October 1, 2018 by voncrapenhauser 2 2
Cybermat47 Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Saw a 1/350 Type B-1 submarine the other day. Nice to see that some Pacific submarines are getting models larger than 1:700. Of course, I was out of money when I saw it Out of the box it has the markings of I-19, the ship that sank the USS Wasp (CV-7) and USS O’Brien (DD-415), and damaged the USS North Carolina (BB-55), all with a single salvo of 6 torpedoes. I’m going to try and make her as I-21, though. She sank 44,000 GRT in Australian waters and shelled the city of Newcastle, before being fought off by the coastal defences at Fort Scratchley - a place I’ve actually visited, and looked out from the gun positions onto where the boat was before being forced away. Here it is built by a guy called “Toom”, with some aftermarket parts. @Feathered_IV thought you might be interested in this one, not sure if you’re in the same area as me though. Feel free to PM me if you are, and I’ll give you directions to the store. But only because there are two of them in stock 1 1
Feathered_IV Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 (edited) VonC, that looks superb. Takes the label multi-media to a whole new level. @Pb_Cybermat47 Thanks for the link! I must admit my interest in submarines is usually for British and German. When I go for Japanese subs it is usually for something much smaller... I really like Kaitens. In the meantime I've been in training mode, learning how to make rib tapes in 1/144. I'll need it for that Fe2b that I was working on a few pages back. Worked out pretty good for a first go. voncrapenhauser Posted October 2, 2018 Author Posted October 2, 2018 Cool idea with the tape Feathered , works a treat.
Cybermat47 Posted October 5, 2018 Posted October 5, 2018 (edited) Bought a HobbyBoss 1/350 type IX-B u-boat the other day, looking forward to making it. Here’s one built by AndyC of the Britmodeller forum. I’m going to make mine in the colours of U-123, a boat that raided off the coast of New York under the command of former pilot Reinhard Hardegen, who died only a few months ago. richard23 Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 Well since I was kindly pointed towards this thread, I've had a look and there's some excellent work going on. Here are a few of my efforts...... A 1/12 bust of a WWI German aviator....... Bust is resin and paint is acrylic. Not the best photo but he's a 75 mm resin figure of a US Marine at Harper's Ferry, 1859.... Paint is acrylic. This one's a 70 mm "Pin Up" figure. The figure is white metal, again painted in acrylics and the freehand 8th Airforce logo on the back of her jacket was a pig to paint. Finally. The 1/350 Type IX-a U-Boat from the HobbyBoss kit..... Blowing ballast on a seascape base.... Acrylic, enamels and oils were used in the finish. On my bench at the moment is the 1/72 SPAD XIII from the eduard ProfiPACK kit. Thanks for looking. Hope you enjoy.☺️ 6 4
voncrapenhauser Posted October 27, 2018 Author Posted October 27, 2018 Nice Elephant Baron. Cool figures Richard and loving the effects on your U boat and welcome to the thread. 1
sallee Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 Yup. Lovely work, Richard. Interested to see your U-boat diorama. I'm looking at doing something like that with resin for my Holland class sub. Do let us know how you did it. 1
Feathered_IV Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 I’d be interested in that too. I recently bought up big on RN destroyers in 1/700 (damn you Cybermat) and would like to do a sea base on at least one.
sallee Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 There's a couple of good things on You Tube by Scale-a-Ton including this one where he does a base for a Pete floatplane. Well worth a look. 1

Just watching videos of how water and waves are created for dioramas is interesting to see. I've seen quite a lot but the ones below done by a Japanese guy are not to believe. Water effects 2.0. richard23 Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Thanks very much for the compliments, folks. The seascape for the U-Boat was the first time ever I've attempted to model water beyond a puddle.....And actually the first boat/ship model I've done in over 40 years, so I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out. I watched a few You Tube clips like those shown above and used some of the ideas from them along with my own. I built the kit as a full hull but left off the props, rudders, etc.... I drew around the lower hull section on a polystyrene sheet before assembly and cut out the shape for it to sit in. The waves or swells were first made from ready mixed wall filler. When that had dried, two layers of tissue (Kleenex type) was pasted on using diluted white glue. When that had fully dried out, I mixed a dark shade of green/blue/black from household emulsion test pots.. Ready mixed kids paints do just as well for this job..... Just mix an almost black colour and paint it over the tissue, then leave it to dry again. Over this, I painted on a couple of layers of clear acrylic artists gel medium.... (Vallejo sell it as water effect stuff but it costs a lot more).... Just paint it on with a stiff bristle brush and let each layer dry before adding more. At this point I fitted the completed model to the "sea", then went back to painting layers of medium but this time tinting it with coloured inks and adding whisps of cotton wool between layers. I also started to add the water going over the deck. This is small scraps of the Kleenex soaked in Vallejo Still Water. When it dries it leaves the tissue almost transparent. Both the gel medium and the Vallejo Still Water stuff tint well with inks and I just carried on adding thin layers, along with the cotton wool until I was happy with the way it looked. The paint and gel layers above the tissue are only about 1 to 2 mm thick in total. Depth effect is just down to colour..... It isn't perfect but as modellers we're never really 100% satisfied with any model.... It is something I'd try again though, along with LED effects, etc. I hope that helps. Richard. ☺️ 2
sallee Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Thanks for the detailed rundown. It looks great. I've got a couple of things to try it on, so I'll have a go at a few techniques.
Feathered_IV Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 The tricky one for me is the precise colours to use for water. My colour vision is rubbish unfortunately. Can't go wrong with grey primer though. Still going with the scratchbuilt FE2b. Started in on the struts and began building up layers of primer to form the wing ribs. 1 1
sallee Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Coming along beautifully, Feathered. I'm reading "Down the Flarepath" and the lovely Cross and Cockade monograph on the Fee at the moment, so much in the Fee mood.
voncrapenhauser Posted November 4, 2018 Author Posted November 4, 2018 (edited) That U boat explosion looks awesome. Great work Feathered The Gunbus is coming along sweet, Your a genius in the scratchbuild stuff........Just cool. Nice Vids Sallee , thanks for sharing. Inspiring stuff there Richard thanks for sharing some tips. Did a seascape for an old Wave Skydiver in the way back, my 1st attempt at a seascape. Excuse bad photos a few years old now. sallee Posted November 4, 2018 Posted November 4, 2018 (edited) That's very cool, VC. Edited November 4, 2018 by sallee Bloody auto"correct"
Feathered_IV Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Nice one VC. That would look equally nice if you could hang it from a wall. More Fee. Six hours of masking to spray the wing ribs of the top wing, but I was able to spread it out over the week. Need to polish the surface to bed it down yet, but if I'd snipped this off a sprue I'd have been pretty happy with it. 4
sallee Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Coming along beatifully, Feathered. The wood effect in the cockpit is more convincing than the matchstick. 1
voncrapenhauser Posted November 5, 2018 Author Posted November 5, 2018 That looks so good Feathered, I think most people would be convinced it did come off a sprue, simply awesome.
Jason_Williams Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 Guys, As much as I love plastic modeling I'm moving it to the Free Subject area. Let's keep this section for the game itself. Been meaning to do this for a while. Thanks, Jason
Semor76 Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 Some shots from my Yak-9k,build a few years ago. (maybe 2007) ..and now to something completely different ^^ I´m on it to make some of my SiFi childhoods dreams come true. Started with the Bandai´s TIE-Fighter Next kits will be a Colonial Viper Mk.I and the classic Cylon Raider, both are short-run modells from Moebius. 2 4
voncrapenhauser Posted November 14, 2018 Author Posted November 14, 2018 Nice models there Semor. The Cylon raider is a great kit, I made one too.
Feathered_IV Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 (edited) Nearly finished another little Hurricane. Had the house to myself this weekend so I retreated to the balcony with a cheeky afternoon glass of red and fired up the airbrush. Some oils and detailing to follow. I do love that great big roundel.
