What is that odd noise in the Gustav's cockpit?

So I bought the G6 in the sale last week, as I have been enjoying the Mitchell's Men mission that currently appears on the Combat Box server and wanted something that fitted the time period.

When I fly the 109G and open up the throttle past about 50% I can hear this strange and continuous thrumming noise in my right ear.  If I had to describe it, it sounds like a small electric generator or a large fish tank filter.  The sound is every bit as loud as the engine up front, but disappears if I turn my head exactly 90 degrees to the left or right to look out over the wing.  At all other times the sound plays with varying degrees of intensity depending on where I am looking and stops and starts with irritating regularity each time I look to the sides.

Looking at the 109 there does not appear to be any sort of generator on the right hand side.  Nor to my knowledge has a 109 ever been fitted with any sort of an aquarium.  So I wanted to ask if anybody else is hearing this noise too?  I know there are people out there who fly nothing less than the 109 at all times, so I would really like to know: Can you hear it?  What is it?  How can you stand it?  And most importantly - Can you switch it off?

What type of fish tank filter?

Wouid you characterize it like a Hagen HOB filter or an Aquaclear? Or does it sound more like an Eheim canister? If it sounds like a Fluval canister then I’d be more worried, but not as worried as if you were gettzing a protein skimmer type sound. On the other if it sounds like a large wet/dry filter then you might want give it more rpm’s...:whereas if it sounds like an internal sponge filter then go with lower rpm’s. I hope this helps.

Wow thanks for the detailed response.  I’ll check it out the different filters and compare.  At the moment I would have said it sort of putters like it has a leaky diaphragm.  But please, don’t go there you saucy devil!

The compressor whine perhaps?

You can hear a similar sound here:

Yeah, I suspect it's the blower. I find all the Gustav's have a nice, throatier sound and louder compressors with their DB605's over the earlier DB601 powered stuff in the game.

I guess you're not talking about the raving lunatic screaming on the radio in German.

That guy either didn't get hugged enough as a child or took the wrong pills after his operation.

I think Jane's WWII Fighters has the worst German radio comms I've heard in any flight sim, by far. I mean, even the audio in the into video is laughable:

I haven't seen that intro in years, somehow seemed a lot less corny when I was a kid lol

Might have to go dig out the old disk...

I loved Janes when it first came out. A lot of wing off's though. Might be before the most recent patch ;)

@Feathered_IV, I think I know which sound you mean, it's a low vibration-like sound. I can hear that too, in both ears, though. When I look to the sides I don't hear it anymore.

I actually think the comms were quite good for their time, a bit repetitive, but games in those times were like that.

My first Flight sim was Jane's Combat Flight Simulator: Longbow 2, which belonged to my friend's dad and was one of three games we could fit on the hard drive of that old windows can. It instilled the fear of Tunguskas in me at the tender age of 7...

As for the whine, I cannot recall hearing a similar noise - and at any rate I'd wager your prime concern is the precision with which it seems to appear/go away. It could be that the FMOD settings for that engine noise doesn't play nice with your headset. Is it a surround headset/speaker? Can you turn that feature off and see if the problem persists? Do you get the same noise in earlier/later 109's?

I think the OP is referring to the rattle that you can hear when looking ~straight ahead and ~straight back, which is not the compressor whine.

It really does sound like a pump. Maybe the frequency is a bit lower, but somewhat similar.

You can have some fun playing around with the different equalizer frequencies in your sound settings.

Mine are in my TV settings.

Each frequency has a different sound allocated to it so you can mix and match as you please. From memory there are:

General engine noise

Wind noise

Rattle

Hum

Thump

Whine

That's the one.  Leaky diaphragm and all!  :good:

Sounds like some people don't have the problem with the sound as much as I do.  That is pretty encouraging so I'll see if I can reset my sound card settings and experiment with different levels.  Hopefully I can fix the problem.

Better than the ranting maniacs we now have in IL2.
