Sturmovikfest 2020: Mass-Formation Events

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi Everyone,

A short time ago, ShamrockOneFive kicked off the inaugural Sturmovikfest on the forum and in his wonderful Stormbirds blog. As part of Sturmovikfest 2020, I would like to announce the following mass-formation events (no targets and no AI):

  • Event 1: Sunday, April 26 3pm-5pm EDT (7pm-9pm UTC)
  • Event 2: Wednesday, April 29 8pm-10pm EDT (12am-2am UTC)    <---- Note: Changed from Thursday to Wednesday

Both events will occur at Deurne Airfield near Antwerp on the Battle of Bodenplatte (BoBP) map. You do not need to own the map to participate. The event will be hosted on the Combat Box Training and Dogfight Server, which can hold 64 planes. However, we'll be going with 54 planes to try and minimize potential lag issues. Signup for the events is below.

Flying in large formations always seems to be popular when they occur on the servers. We're going to try to kick it up a notch and get several flights of six together in whatever combination the server will bear and pilots can manage. There are no targets or AI opponents in this event. This is strictly about flying together with a large group for the fun and challenge of it.

The events are open to pilots flying WWI and WWII planes so we'll end up with separate formations, due to speed differences. If we can time it right, we may get the WWI and WWII formations passing midfield at the same time. That would be quite a sight.

How to Sign Up For the Events

Spoiler

Please apply using one or both of the following forms, which will be available until all 54 spots for each event are assigned:

The currently allocated spots are listed here. I'll update the list as I have time.

Note:

  • The purpose of the events is to have a good time trying to get lots of planes into some sort of formation, so don't worry if things get a bit chaotic. Just try your best, based on your abilities.
  • Don't worry if you have never flown formation before. I'll place the novices at the back of each flight as much as possible. Collisions will be turned off, so you won't take everyone down. Enjoy!
  • Applications will be accepted as they arrive, until the 54 open spots are filled.
  • I'll send the server password to event participants by PM shortly after you apply.

Notes on the Events

Spoiler

I'll be adding more details to this post in the coming days, but here are a few notes to start:

  • Voice communication is mandatory, using TeamSpeak (see "Voice Communications" below). Chat is not an option for this event since efficient coordination is vital to make it work well.
  • Ensure that you have a good ping to the Combat Box Training Server. There will be no ping limit set. Try a test and if you see planes jumping around too much, that's not good for flying formation. If your ping gets too bad during the event, you may be asked to space yourself out more or leave the formation.
  • Collision damage will be turned off for the events.

Formation Flying and Event Formations

Spoiler

If you are new to formation flying, you may flounder a bit but just have fun and do your best. Have a look at these formation flying videos by Requiem:

Here are a couple of tips that I find useful:

  • To help you keep your position relative to another plane, position your plane to line up two objects on the other plane. E.g., if you have a Spitfire on your right, you could line up the radio antenna just behind the cockpit with the back end of the underwing radiator on the right wing.
  • If you are closing too fast on another plane to get into formation, you have some options to reduce speed:
    - Pull the power back
    - Cross your controls briefly to generate drag (e.g., bank slightly right and apply a bit of left rudder or bank slightly left and apply a bit of right rudder)
    - Lower your speed brake briefly (if you have one)

Here are the formations we'll use for the events:

  • We'll use a basic formation consisting of a flight of aircraft, in a modified vic formation. Here is the formation with the flight position numbers shown:

                     1     <--- Flight Leader
                 2     3
              4     5     6
             (7)   7    (8)

Each row in the flight formation should be slightly lower than the row ahead.

The flight position assignments for the April 29 event are shown here (they may change as people are added so be sure to check them just before the event).
Important! Please remember your flight name and position number (e.g., "Red 2", "Eagle 5") so your leader can use that name if they call you.

  • For each squadron of WWII aircraft, we'll combine three flights in line astern formation, staggered by altitude, like so:

    - Bombers (Lead)     - 1,400 ft. (427m)
    - Ground Attackers  - 1,200 ft. (366m)
    - Fighters                   - 1,000 ft. (305m)

Aircraft maintain 175 mph (282 kph)

  • For each squadron of WWI aircraft, we'll combine two flights in line astern formation, staggered by altitude, like so:

    - Bombers (Lead)     - 1,200 ft. (366m)
    - Fighters                   - 1,000 ft. (305m)

Aircraft maintain 81 mph (130 kph)

Important! Before takeoff or after air spawn, everyone should set their altimeter to QFE (keybind: "Altimeter: reference pressure toggle". Press the key until Technochat
indicates "Altimeter reference pressure: nearest friendly airfield elevation" and/or your altimeter reads 0 ft. / 0m on the ground or your current altitude
above field level).

Voice Communications

Spoiler

Communications Software: TeamSpeak
When you set up your microphone in the Capture screen, choose Push-to-Talk under Activation.

TeamSpeak Server: Official BoS TeamSpeak Server

Channels: Under MP Server #3  >  Axis #3  >  Italian, Spanish, , PolishCzech, Danish, and Portuguese channels, which are near the bottom of the MP Server #3 list.
We'll meet up in the Italian channel to start and then go to separate channels, one per flight.

Important! Flight leaders only, please set up a whisper list (see below) called "Formation Event" for communications between channels. I'll be coordinating the flights using this list. The Flight leaders for April 29 are:

  • 1 Squadron
    - 361st_Augur* - Blue Flight (WWII Bombers)
    - =[TIA]=Stoopy - Green Flight (WWII Ground Attackers)
-332FG-Magic_Zach - Red Flight (WWII Fighters)
  • 2 Squadron
    - TBA - Eagle Flight (WWII Bombers)
KC7 - Hawk Flight (WWII Fighters)
    - TBA - Osprey Flight (WWII Fighters)
  • 3 Squadron
    - US103_Baer - Stratus Flight - (WWI Fighters)

Flight assignments for April 29 are indicated here.

To create the whisper list, do the following:

1. In the TeamSpeak Tools menu, choose Whisper Lists.

The Whisper List dialog appears with a grey box requesting that
you press the key that you want to use as push-to-talk (PTT) for
the whisper list only. Once you press the key, the key appears under
Local Whisperlists on the left. That is the current name of your whisper list.

2. Select the whisper list name on the left, click the Rename button at the bottom, and change the name to "Formation Event".

3. Under Whisper List Details, set Whisper to to Clients and Channels.

Your whisper list is now ready. You can add flight leader names to the list
when you join TeamSpeak for the formation event (see next step).

4. When you enter the TeamSpeak server for the formation event, open the Whisper Lists dialog again and choose "Formation Event" on the left.

5. On the right side, click the ">" symbol beside BoS TeamSpeak Server and the ">" symbol beside Clients.

319186244_TS4.thumb.png.6c6a32b37f66cbc74b2094dba9c669e3.png

6. Under Clients, click and drag the name of each flight leader into the center box.

Note: Only clients that are on the TeamSpeak server are listed. If a leader is late, you will need to add them later.

The clients that you dragged are now included in your "Formation Event" whisper list.

Important! Do not change your TeamSpeak name after you join the TeamSpeak server for the event. If you do this, everyone
that added your old name to the whisper list will need to close the Whisper List dialog, reopen it, and add your new name.

Airfield Area Setup and Spectator Cameras

Spoiler

Here is the setup for the airfield, Deurne (at the South end of Antwerp), and the surrounding area:

2020_4_24__1_34_0.png.2bf30ca7fd5c1977cee15357c41f2793.png

At the airfield There are three WWII aircraft spawns (bomber, ground attack, fighter) and two WWI aircraft spawns (bomber, fighter).

There are air spawns to the North of Antwerp with the same aircraft as Deurne. The air spawns are pointed to the South West.

Here is the immediate airspace around Deurne:

2020_4_24__1_34_29.png.3f25b85dbbedaf70688afc92aa8a41dc.png

There are the following guidelines on the map to help flight leaders and provide common reference points for coordinating formations:

  • One red line between "Point 1" and "Point 2", which is aligned with the active runway, 11 (112 degrees).
  • One red line between "Point 3" and Point 4" (not shown), crossing the active runway at midfield.
  • A blue box surrounding the airfield, which helps guide a large bomber to make a gentle 180 degree turn from the red line to the blue line.
  • A "circuit" (or "pattern" in the U.S.) to help fly orderly formations over the airfield and do orderly formation and non-formation landings.
The circuit consists of five legs:
    - Takeoff (112 degrees)
    - Crosswind (22 degrees)
    - Downwind (292 degrees)
    - Base (202 degrees)
    - Final (112 degrees)

Aircraft icons are on so you can see the location of your plane relative to the guidelines.

Here is a closeup view of the airfield:

2020_4_24__1_34_48.png.b758f48e89549a35cb28ef05e268a5b2.png

The WWII bomber spawns are on the North West side of the field. Turn left and left again to reach the runway.

The WWII ground attacker and fighter spawns are at the end of the runway on either side.

The WWI fighters and bombers are on the South side of the field. You can turn right and takeoff along the grass (112 degrees) or you can taxi to the runway to takeoff.

Important! Before takeoff or after air spawn, everyone should set their altimeter to QFE (keybind: "Altimeter: reference pressure toggle". Press the key until Technochat indicates "Altimeter reference pressure: nearest friendly airfield elevation" and/or your altimeter reads 0 ft. / 0m on the ground or your current altitude above field level).

The flight leader should line up for takeoff near the windsock on the right to allow room for the rest of the flight on the runway.

After landing, exit the runway on the grass to the left.

The airfield has 6 spectator cameras available for those that want to record outside views (not while in formation please unless you are leading and you have autopilot on

  • Tower (South West side of the field)
  • North End (mid-field)
  • North End High (mid-field)
  • South End (mid-field)
  • End of Runway 11 (the active runway)
  • End of Runway 29 (the reciprocal runway)

Important! Note the following to avoid server lag issues:

  • We may need to limit in-game track recordings because it's uncertain how much effect they have on server performance. We may need to limit track recordings to one person, which would capture a cockpit view for that person only, but an external view that you could switch to anyone using Shift+F2 (friendly, i.e., everyone in the event).
You can stream or you can record your screen using software such as ShadowPlay or OBS Studio.
  • Tacview is disabled.

Skins

Spoiler

In this section, I'll post links to any skins that people want to provide for the event. Please create a post in this thread with your link to your skin and a picture and I'll add it here.

In order to see the skins in-game, people need to do the following:

1. Place the skin file in your game folder under \data\graphics\skins\aircraft, where aircraft is the folder for the particular aircraft.

2. After you choose the aircraft in-game, open your Plane Settings screen, click the drop-down list under Paint scheme, choose Custom and choose the skin.

Excellent and thank you!

Posting only because I did not see an option for "No Preference" or how to let you know otherwise: definitely move me around as needed to accommodate others, not terribly fussy about genre or type of aircraft.

When I access the form for 30 April, it appears to still be in 'edit' mode, where I can't enter any answers but I can change the original questions.  Am I just doing something dumb?

Thanks. I think it's fixed now.

OK, will do. I'll check in with the selected applicants to see which ones have no preference re. era or plane type.

This is super great. I've signed up for the Thursday event, but please know I'm flexible - I can probably lead a formation but I'm happy to fly #2 or #3 or whatever as required, and I picked 'fighters' but I'm happy to fly anything really. I'm also fine if I'm not picked, happy to help via admin of the server.

Edit: I don't have FC, so WW2 only for me. But I think I have all of the stuff for WW2.

Thanks very much for the use of the server Alonzo. I'll keep your flexibility in mind if you are picked for a spot.

I signed up for both. I suspect you may get a higher turn out for Sunday so I am fine being booted to Thursday. Also if it hasn't been discussed yet, I think it would be great if one or several flyers were able to stream on twitch or youtube if it goes over 54 pilots.

This system of individual signing is unfortunate in case the whole squadron wants to fly - would it be possible to get 6 slots for DBS / April 26th?

The random selection ends at 1pm EDT today and then spots are filled as applications come in. There are 13 applications for the 26th at the moment so apply for the six spots and it's likely you will get them.

OK, thanks.

Yes, getting some recordings will be great. My only concern is whether we will get some lag if too many people record. Do the experts have any comments on the effect of recording? Does IL-2 track recording cause lag more than screen recording using Shadowplay, OBS, etc.? Should I limit the number of people recording and if so, what's a good limit?

If you plan to fly the A-20 in the mass-formation event, note that ROCKET_KNUT has created an awesome skin based on the Sturmovikfest graphic theme. Place the skin file in your game folder under \data\graphics\skins\A20B. After you choose the A-20 in-game, open your Plane Settings screen, click the drop-down list under Paint scheme, choose Custom and choose the skin.

Note: Only pilots that have the skin in \data\graphics\skins\A20B will be able to see it in-game.

Hi Jim, it looks like I am also able to do the Sunday event, so please put me down for that one too.

I wonder if some of the squads would like to join. They might be interested in a close fighter formation to show off their skills. I'm thinking maybe SCG, TWC, 332nd, TWB, Gemini. I'm sure there are lots more. I'll throw a message into our Discord #community-liason.

I added you to the Sunday event too. Will you be the server admin on that day then?

Is it possible to do a test with you and I (and whoever is around) before Sunday to make sure the mission runs OK (see PM for mission, sds, and readme).

That sounds good, thanks. Were light right now on WWI era (3 for April 26, 1 for April 30) and Ground Attackers (2 for April 26, 1 for April 30 29). I added some stats to the participant list above.

Note that I've decided to move the Thursday April 30 event to Wednesday April 29, at the same time.

I just added section "Airfield Area Setup and Spectator Cameras" to the opening post.

Also, I added a link to the tentative flight assignments for April 26 to this post.

I can reserve two or three spots if people want to just record using the airfield cameras or aircraft camera views. I'm not sure yet how recording will affect lag so I may need to limit recording.

Thanks for doing this Jim.  Is actual aircraft selection (i.e, Stuka, IL2, Duck etc. in the case of ground attackers) up to the discretion of each flight?

Hi Jim.  Recording the mission will make no difference to performance.  Different netcode from @Maddox Games.:salute:

Lag due to the difference in ping with large formations in close proximity might make life interesting though.

Yes, it should be an exciting experience with all those planes bouncing around. Hopefully, they all bounce in the same direction. I have collisions turned off so everyone can keep calm and carry on.  :)

Everyone taking part in the April 26 mass-formation event, please review the opening post before the event. Some information may have changed. Most importantly, see the following:

  • Formation Flying and Event Formations

    Important!

-Before takeoff or after air spawn, everyone should set their altimeter to QFE (keybind: "Altimeter: reference pressure toggle". Press the key until Technochat
indicates "Altimeter reference pressure: nearest friendly airfield elevation" and/or your altimeter reads 0 ft. / 0m on the ground or your current altitude
       above field level).

-The flight position assignments for the April 26 event are shown here (they may have changed since you last looked).
Please remember your flight name and position number (e.g., "Red 2", "Eagle 5") so your leader can use that name if they call you.

  • Voice Communications

Important! Flight leaders need to create a TeamSpeak whisper list so I can coordinate between channels. See the opening post for more details.

I'll be joining TeamSpeak at least 1 hour before the event so I can help anyone that needs it.

  • Airfield Area Setup and Spectator Cameras

Important! Note the following to avoid server lag issues:

       - Do not make in-game track recordings. Instead, you can stream the event or you can record using software such as ShadowPlay or OBS Studio.

       - Tacview is disabled.

See you at the event everyone. It should be lots of fun to try and get all those planes flying in formation.

Maurizio R.,

I got an email from Google forms saying that you wanted to apply. Have you tried this link for the form?  If it does not work for some reason, just reply ASAP with the following responses:

  • What is your name on the IL-2 Forum?

  • What era do you want to choose aircraft from when you join the event, WWI or WWII?

  • What aircraft type do you want to fly, bomber, ground attacker, or fighter (you will be able to choose any plane within that type when you join the event)?

  • What level of formation-flying experience do you have, high, medium, or low/none?

  • Do you have (or will you have) TeamSpeak for voice communications by the time of the event? Voice communication is mandatory to participate.

There is currently only 8 spots left, but I'll save you a spot until 10am Sunday. Make sure to look at the post above before the event.

I'm not sure, probably. I'll try to get my OBS studio recorder setup and get some videos, but I'll be fairly busy coordinating the flights.

I will do my best.

Is track recording completely off limits, or is it permissible to record short clips for external shots later, like 30s fly by?

Quick query so I can get some practice in this afternoon.

What will the fighters be? 109 - k4's or something else?

Just checking as I spotted the skin on the original Sturmovikfest Announcement post, and wanted to have that set and ready as well.

Not seen any aircraft allocations as of yet.

Thanks

I've been told that track recording causes lag. We could try it briefly but please ask on voice comms first.

You can pick any fighter that you want. Everything is available.
