doog442 Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 This game has tormented me since first release in 2001.I appear to be continually upgrading I'm currently running a GTX 1070, i5 9600 K with 16GB of 3200 ram and a Rift CV1. I'm interested in the thoughts of those who have upgraded to a Rift S and the difference in image quality from a CV1. Is it a worthy upgrade? My thoughts are to also upgrade the GPU to a GTX 2070 super to supplement the Rift S. If I went Reverb I'm worried the system might need more spent on it.
dburne Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 I went from Rift CV1 to the Rift S when it was released last May. I have been quite pleased with it. Solid unit and the thing just works beautifully every time. I use it daily, for many hours every week. Hardly any muss or fuss. You will find performance to be about on par with your CV1, even though it is higher resolution. This is due to it being an 80Hz device rather than 90Hz the CV1 was. Much simpler setup and the inside/out Insight tracking works quite well. It has two drawbacks in my opinion. 1: The audio strap. I like good solid sound, and the audio strap is weak in my opinion. Thankfully it has a jack, and I use earbuds plugged into the headphone jack and sound is awesome. 2: Mic is iffy, mine kept cutting out so I purchased a cheap USB desktop mic instead. Mine may not be too common an issue not sure, I have seen a few post over on the Oculus forums with the same mic issue.
doog442 Posted April 15, 2020 Author Posted April 15, 2020 Cheers @dburne I wouldn't be expecting miracles just a semi decent upgrade on image quality to sharpen things up a bit. I'm quite realistic about expectations. I also play X plane 11 and they've just released Vulkan so another reason to move onwards and upwards. Strangely enough I've tried to look at sourcing an S but no joy through the usual channels just daft prices on ebay.
Lensman1945 Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 Agreed, a nice upgrade from the CV1, a definite increase in detail. Comfortable headset, but as Don says, requires an audio upgrade.

They get them in and then they go fast. Undoubtedly supply chain has been affected by the Virus. Edited April 16, 2020 by dburne
ECV56_Lubermatz Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 For me it was a great upgrade. The image quality really worth i even though the problems with the microphone and headphones are real. I solved them too with a desktop Mic and a goos pair of earphones. I've been reading that the release of Half Life has really raised the HMD's demand. By the way, it's an incredible game.

[TDH]Meankitty731 Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 As it sits right now the "best" headset you can get is the Samsung Odyssey. Has higher pixel density than any other HMU. Even Beats out the Vive+. CV1 is ancient tech now.
Starcos Posted April 17, 2020 Posted April 17, 2020 (edited) I don't know about the Odyssey. It was the best buy a year ago, but now... I don't think so. And it can't be bought in Europe. Rift S is a solid choice, but one drawback, that wasn't mentioned here: no physical IPD adjustment. So if you have smaller or larger IPD, it's not good for you. HP Reverb is the best for sims, but it does require a stronger hardware, and it also lacks IPD adjustment. (Yeah, it's me again, always with the ipd... ? ) Edited April 17, 2020 by Starcos
