Aircraft fire in multiplayer

Would there be an expectation that, catching fire, in multiplayer might increase player ping, to the point that they get booted from the server ?

Over the last couple of months I’ve been kicked from the server, a few times, specifically, it appears to me, when I’ve been on fire.  I thought I’d resolved ping problems at my end, and indeed checking my ping immediately afterwards it returns a ping in the mid 40’s.  Frustratingly for me, and no doubt frustrating for the player who set me alight, I have no idea why I seem to specifically get booted, apart from maybe being on fire.

Maybe J5 Mueller or Hellcat can shed some light.  They/you attacked me last night (30/03 11.30 pm GMT ish). I was set on fire by Hellcat so started to dive down, side slipping to put out the flames, which eventually happened, then, with no warning, I ended up with the “Lost connection with the server” message.  Maybe they saw why I’d lost connection ?  It does seem strange that I seem to get an occasional disconnect when I get shot down, specifically, it appears, when in flames (even if in this case I’d put then out).

The server at he time only had about 20 players and I didn’t observe any warping from my end that might have suggested problems.

From my understanding, gun effects like smoke, explosions, especialy flames, etc. overloads the network, hence why some people experience stutter and crashes when in the middle of it online, especially in furballs, when you have two, three planes breaking apart and in flames. In ROF it is not uncommon to crash if you are taking off and a Gotha releases a whole load of bombs on top of you. Doing some tests in the past, firing the guns, blasting bombers and such dropped my fps dramatically, or demanded way more from my GPU.

So perhaps you already have a thin connection (5MB at best from the UK to Seattle, which should get there on the low kbites), and when things get 'explosive' and full of effects, you get overloaded and disconnect.

It might be something else though.

Simple answer - yes , own crate of fire can kick you do to high ping.

On average I have 110 ms in Flugpark so when on fire my ping have to go above the limit, if I remember correctly the kick threshold is 350 ms on Flugpark.

I just assumed these guys were disconnecting to save their V-life and deny my kill.

It's not a bug, it's a feature!

BTW disco player would not deny any kill , you got the kill  if you just make any % of damage ,  it's even better and safe4 that way ;) you don't have to worry about them anymore. Player which disconnected his sorite will not count if server admin set it that way in configuration file or he can set it that he will loose streak and even that can be adjusted, for example if disco without damage, steak is saved or  if damage taken  5 minutes before disco, streak is saved also.

@HagarTheHorrible

I didn't notice any warping .....I've noticed on various servers (for no real reason that I can see) there have been multi disconnects ... The other night 3 of us were disconnected at the same time while fighting Bristol's ....Lately the internet's being hit hard so that could be a factor as well....S~

Well I know that I didn't get the kill on any of the guys that did it to me.

Though I am mixed on the idea of a disconnect killing your streak.  They used that setting on WoL and a few other servers; so it made it largely pointless for me to try building a streak.  Not being in their region, and with the ping limit they had set up, it was just a matter of time before a random disconnect or boot ended it.

I would guess the animation is increasing the load on your CPU, increasing your game's response time to the server and therefore your ping.  Having said that, the algorithm being used to make the kick decision is clearly flawed.  A client should not be kicked unless their ping has exceeded the set threshold for a minimum period, thereby allowing for scenarios like the one you describe.  I have observed that in IL2 multiplayer, clients connect before all the map components are loaded, this is clear from the fact that the mission description may not load until several seconds following the map appearing.  During that period I get kicked from Flugpark, simply because the controlling program isn't waiting long enough to be able to take a meaningful ping reading.  The situation is exacerbated by the fact that unlike RoF, IL2 does not allow players to distunguish between losing connection and being kicked.

In my servers I don't apply ping limits, but having been connected for 90 seconds, each player receives a PM in the chat telling them their current ping, so at least they know where they stand.  Any admin wishing to limit client pings, should first warn relevant players of the situation, giving them time to disconnect gracefully of their own accord. Of course those failing to leave should be kicked, and for clarity the reason for their removal should be displayed publicly in the chat window.  In my personal view, the current Flugpark system is inept, unprofessional, hostile and confusing.  I'm sure we would welcome an admin taking the opportunity to explain themselves.
